Aquarium dwarf hairgrass care isn’t as easy as you might think. This plant prefers medium to high light. You also want a substrate that is designed for live plants that has a lot of nutrients in it. This plant is said to be the easiest carpeting plant in the hobby.

Aquarium plant dwarf hairgrass prefers a substrate that has a lot of nutrients in it for the roots to feed on. I highly advise using a plant substrate specifically designed to grow plants. If you plan on using gravel or sand to grow hairgrass, your going to need to add some nutrient tabs inside of it.
This plant prefers a lot of light. This means that the super cheap budget LED lights aren’t going to be the best option. The plant will still grow but it’s going to take a lot more time.
Dwarf hairgrass will grow in a low tech planted aquarium but it’s going to take a lot more time than if you had CO2. What also might help is to do a lot of aquarium water changes to add more CO2 to the water. A lot of people don’t know this but by adding new water to the tank there is CO2 in that new water for the plants to feed on.
When planting dwarf hairgrass you should tear up the clump that you purchased into smaller quarter size pieces and then plant them a couple inches apart from each other in your aquarium. By tearing the mother piece of plant apart the plant is going into defense mechanism and it’s going to grow a lot faster than just throwing the entire piece in the substrate.
You can also trim the actual grass part of this plant and it will start to carpet its self from side to side. When you trim the grass blades the plants defense mechanism sends roots from side to side which then creates a carpeting effect in your fish aquarium.
Using this plant in a sand substrate is it going to work the greatest. Planting this plant and gravel is not a good option for dwarf hairgrass either. There’s just very little nutrients for the roots to feed on. You’re going to have much more success using a nutrient rich substrate like a planted tank substrate.

Love it. I've just started a dirted 10 gallon tank after being away from the hobby for 30+ years. My how times have changed. Unfortunately, I have to rely on Amazon for any and all of my supplies as there are no local shops anymore. But we'll get there. ❤

My substrate is with a lot of nutrients but it's actually sand mixed with dirt from the forest like year and a half ago. XD Trust me everything grows in it because the dirted tank is always the best choice. To the newbies: Don't do it yet and buy substrate with nutrients from the pet store instead because you don't know what you are doing yet.

Dwarf hairgrass is the easiest carpet. It’s one of my favorite. To go even further my favorite hairgrass is Belem bc you don’t have to trim it. It only grows 2-3 inches and curls itself over vs growing straight up. I like to let it get really thick to the point where it stops putting out runners bc there is no more room. Then i take it all out and start it over again. Also when I plant hairgrass I break it down to just a few blades in a clump (4-6) blades. I plant them about 1/2 inch apart. They start throwing runners real quick. I plant about a half inch back from the glass this way I don’t disturb the soil line near the glass and I can gauge the growth once I see runners and roots popping up near the glass. I of course use co2 and high light. Thought about trying it without co2 as I’ve never had a low tech tank.

Hair grass and monte carlo are my best (easiest) carpeting plants (using soil) because they seem to stay as a low carpet (not sure of the monte carlo yet). Elatinoides I struggle to keep low as it likes to climb. Lilaeopsis I find hard to grow properly, healthy but not a dense carpet.

I heard dry start method helps dwarf hair grass transition to aquatic life faster. I'm gonna try it. I got this method from buceplants, they had a wonderful article explaining step by step how to do it. I can agree with you on substrate, dwarf hair grass does need fertilized soil or it think it will melt and turn brown

I bought some unlabeled aquarium seeds off of Amazon for like 8 bucks while I was half asleep. I woke up the next day and tried to cancel the order but it didn't work. So a few days later when they arrived I sprouted them in toilet paper and they looked like hairgrass. Today I decided to transfer them into my tank that has potting soil capped with sand and gravel. I'm still waiting for the other seeds to sprout fully but not too many have. The hairgrass sprouted practically overnight though. Maybe the $8 mystery seeds are worth it after all.

I bought some last week, fluval stratum (lightly capped with black sand), Iwagumi-ish aquascape, no floaters, DIY CO2(citric acid/baking soda) because I scored a used Fluval Spec V for $30 with metal stand. I did dose with seachem flourite (heavily) and set my lights to 12 (I have a cheap hygger that only lets you do 3/6/12 on the timer). It's only been days for me so I'll report back with progress if any. I was gonna put a betta in there but the flow (even on the lowest setting) seems too strong. I stuck some "eraser" sponge on the inside of the outlet it clogged up in 2 days with 0 flow. I don't want to make holes in the pump hose so I may invest in one of those 3D printed spray bars ($20 ouch). One of the things I had left over where lots of strands with roots so I bunched those up and planted that way. I bought mines I petsmart $9.99 now it looks like I'll need to invest in some sweet aquascaping scissors, the only thing I didn't think about.

To reduce the flow I use an intake sponge. Cut off the end to size. Then one cut down the side so you can fit it on the hang on back where the water is coming out. Works perfectly for me. Hope that made sense. Good luck

@@angiebear8727 Yea a while back I ended up cutting a block of coarse filter sponge(zoo med for a turtle filter of some sort) made a hole in the center that goes midway(same idea as a pre filter) and stuck that on the outlet, which produced another problem algae.
