A lot of classic cars use leaf spring suspensions this would be great if you could get them in the right size to fit. It would be so much easier to convert without having to hookup a electric motor to a transmission and or driveshaft. Less parts less unneeded weight.

New Scout EVs (Terra and Traveler) have this design solid rear axle EV setup. Having the differential, electric motor, and inverter all traveling up and down is a lot of moving, un-sprung weight. Also, the high voltage, high current power cables are not moving / flexible things tethered between the axle and the frame - a potential big safety issue should those cables ever fray, ground, or get cut.

Deafening silence about the main challenge - easy-to-fit battery-packs. Space has been free'd up in the engine compartment - so that's where some batteries could go. We just need a video showing a combustion pickup being effortlessly converted in 3-4 days by a couple of savvy DIY'ers or pro-converters. With range options between 100-250 miles. And if conversions cost much more than $25,000 excluding donor ICE pickup - forget it. Especially if that $25k only buys you 50-100 miles of real-world range. Paul G

Good for lighter vehicles like cars, SUV’s and some 1/2 ton trucks. According to the manufacturer max torque to the wheels is 7,000 newton meters which is about 3,872 pounds with 32” tires. That’s a lot for any vehicle under 10,000 pounds on a hard surface. Pulling a big boat from a steep ramp, thick mud, or other off road applications, or pulling applications would probably stall the motor but those aren’t typical applications. Unfortunately those are applications where the efficiency of electric drive would be most beneficial.

Stick them where the old lump went and fuel tank ... Or use the flatter type BYD blade packs .. between chassis rails. Perfect vehicle to convert🤔 is something like the old VW T2 crew cab pick up trucks its been done several times ..i suspect thats where Rivian got their inspiration for the cross/ through cab store tunnel😉 and then youve all the space under the rear bench seat in the back.and where the engine mostly lived... you'd double the power output as well even without a front motor giving two driven axels.😁 Other candidates include minivans /MPVs light Transit type Vans and Estate cars. 😎

The 4WD version appears to be disconnected. I'm curious how well off-roading would work or feel when the power delivery is disconnected between the axles. Perhaps they could connect the transfer case to the rear axle leaving the driveshaft in place to lock the front and rear wheels together. This might also be easier for OEM's to implement as well. Just a thought.

Why couldn't they have an axle upfront and an axle in the rear and have one powering the trucks movement forward and one charging the batteries while it's moving? When you want more traction the axle creating power could be used to work with the other axle pushing the truck foward. I know there would be some form of resistance but don't you think that would increase the mileage?
@Napalmdog

That's implemented in braking systems, otherwise known as regenerative braking. And that braking force is why you can't simply let a generator be pushed along generating power; the generation creates a hell of a lot of drag.

A potentially great way to EV-retrofit some cool old trucks. Those of us who enjoy both classic trucks and electric drivetrains will benefit greatly from such a simple system. Yes, this is not a new idea at all, it just needs to achieve sufficient market penetration for prices to come down to the point where I can slap one of these in a rust-free old truck here in the Nevada high desert, and keep it going for decades to come. A long-lived solid-state lithium battery, some PV panels, and there's your "lifetime transportation"...
