No cooling on a Carrier package unit that had a blank thermostat. Electrical shorts can be harder to find if the short is intermittent. I use simple logical experience to narrow down the most likely cause. Be sure to check everything and use the clues to narrow down your search.

I hate it when you go looking for the short.....and it doesn't show itself again. You obviously hit all the areas where thise crap boxes are known to rub out. Its happened to me countless times. As always great job Rick

I'll give props to US electrical code. A disconnect at the unit makes a hellofa lot of sense and super convenient for techs. Asia still uses a wall mounted breaker, sometimes pretty far away. Small matter but that unit mounted disconnect is a time saver. Another good video.

great video, I like like your methodical testing the path of the hot leg and elimination by pulling a connection. 90% of unit more than 5 years old have the economisers disconnected from intermittent trips. The cost of a new mod motor... eliminates the "do you want this replaced" question by sheer costs involved. Problem is, now with this covid-19 thing, IAQ is going to be a big thing now. so all those defunct economisers will be a cash cow.

oh, one of the things I do with wires rubbing is protect them with 5/8 mini split drain hose. I split it lengthwise and tuck the wires in it. Then hold it in place with a few zip ties...especially line voltage lines that notoriously blow out copper refrigerant lines, and make a huge oily mess.

At 4:30 and 5:00, you talk about the "new" short finder and it doesn't use a PTC. Where can I find info on how they build it and which product are you referring to? Do you recommend the new one or you still don't like it?
@HVACRSurvival
@HVACRSurvival 2 жыл бұрын
The new one is not a PTC it's basically a breaker with an LED light.

Something else I've done is use a piece of armaflex where the wires go over the blower. The roof will sandwich everything in place and provides good protection. Thanks for the video Rick! Economizers suck! Rip em all out lol.

We used to do stuff like that with the old t87 thermostats for the heat anticipator. These new meters are pretty accurate.
@hvac01453
@hvac01453 4 жыл бұрын
Hvac 1 the Q539 or 1147 sub bases for the T87, were the only style that needed that because the heat anticipatory would read below one tenth of an amp. Many times you could get the heat anticipator setting on the wiring diagram ( gas valve amps ). Most other thermostat manufacturers eliminated this device.
