Went to turn my defrost and heater on and got a crazy noise from the dash!! Turns out my blower fan motor was rusty.. I pulled it out and lubed it up with some WD-40 and Voila!! works great again!! This did not cost any money and was a really fast fix.. I did it on my lunch break with filming and it still only took 20 minutes.. It would probably take even less if I wasn't holding a camera in one hand and trying to do it with the other hand.. This would have cost a grip taking it to a bmw dealership.. so I encourage you to save some money and just do it yourself.

To anybody who has this kind of problem (like me - note: mine is a E87). In most cases, the noise is due to a bad lubrification of that part: note that you can see and reach that part just removing the cabin air filter (just unscrewing 6 crews) and using a 20cm straw for the spray lubrificant. It is quite enough, if the fan is not stuck. Thanks to the author of this video, because I woundn't have been able to recognize the part without haven't seen the video before.

Thanks, man! this worked out great on my 1 series. It was squeaking real bad every time I hit the brakes. I used a little lube (not too much) and was careful not to get any on the motor brush. Would have never figured it out without this vid though so thanks again.

Good to know. Mine does the same and have been wondering if it's a ground issue when I hit the brakes. Just the play on the bearing or something. I'll grease it when it warms up outside.

Great fix, thank you! as someone mentioned, WD40 is not enough, use a lithium grease or silicone lube.

Thanks for the video. I had the same issue and it turned out the the seal around the windscreen was not put back in correctly at my local repair shop and water was leaking directly above the fan causing it to rust, not as bad as yours though, and with a good soaking of WD40 and breakaway , problem solved. However it did take a while to get rid of that WD40 smell.

another big thing you can try and do is make sure your blower fan isnt bent. mine was bent a little bit and was rubbing against the top plastic under the dash. i put it all back together and pushed it to one side and works prefect now

@@martinvasek9757 Yea I did it and the lubricant helped, but my ultimate issue was that the fan blade was too loose and it was making loud rattling noises. I kept the screws a little loose so when it spins it had enough play in it to not rub against the piece that it sets on. Sorry, it's hard to explain.

Awesome, but remember that WD-40 is not a lubricant for high speed bearings, sleeve bearings, motors. etc. I suspect oil such as machine oil would work better. That WD-40 will dry up soon, and the squeeling will return.

Thanks a lot for this thorough video! Is it possible to test the motor alone? (without the white resistor)? Because I've heard that the input signal on the resistor is 12V DC but the output signal (the one going TO the motor) is 12V alternating. Any help?

Well, after sand in our radiators we do have vinyl tapes in our blower motors. Is it because assembly lines in poor countries ? I noticed many of these problems came from US models which often are assembled especially in those south african and india factories. In other hand i never heard about these problems in EU assembled models...

@@thekimballproject3236 that's awesome! I was watching your work and suddenly it was like an episode of Miami Vice; reminded me of David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler. Very nice touch! I followed your directions on my 2005 320D and everything came out as you said it should. Found some dried-up leaves and twigs in the impeller fan. I've ordered a new resistor and will lubricate the spinner. Is there a common point at the windshield where water gets in? I just bought the car used in January and went to a powerwash after buying it. The front passenger side carpet was wet and the blower died shortly afterward. What's the best way to go about sealing it off?

The wire harness for the blower is the recall. That’s correct 👍 the original harness is prone to catch fire. Airbags have recalls as well. Apparently the Japanese made airbags can project metal when deployed ☠️

WD40 is a rust remover and a very thin lubricant which is not suitable for this purpose. Your blower will start screaming again very soon. You better use a lithium based lubricant or at least a machine oil.
@thekimballproject3236

I agree lithium would be better.. however, I did this 4 years ago with wd-40 and it still is good to go. no screaming.
