@Sovereign I don't see it quite the way you do. Throughout the whole movie, all he's been doing is killing people. Who had he spared? so yeah, it was never stated he would kill the store owner. But if I remember the ending of the movie, he did a coin toss with the woman. She lost and died. So, we can naturally imply that would have been the result with the store owner in the earlier part of the movie. Can you see what I'm saying? Here is the woman's coin toss. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIe8kpxsmKxlbrs So anyway. I disagree with your conclusion. The killer was crazy. But there was always a method to his madness. He wouldn't suddenly do something different with the store owner when he's been doing other consistent things throughout the whole story.

That last "which it is" line. Yo... It's SO layered, probably one of the best dialog closers ever... Chigurh basically did all that with the appearance of importance because the cashier's life was on the line. And with that line, he just undermines the coins/cashiers value like their entire dialogue didn't even matter. His life was just another coin amongst other coins. Which confirms that had it been heads down, he would have killed the cashier. And it wouldn't have bothered him at all. Talk about facing true evil.

I think Chigur is actually very pleased (relieved) that the old timer called right. As the conversation and tension progresses, I think Chigur actually has some pity (if possible) for the old timer, and sort of regrets putting the man to a toss, but has to see it through (otherwise it wouldn't be fair) to satisfy himself. This is perhaps one of the greatest 'close calls' with a villian ever filmed.
@DDSAFilmsTOO5 жыл бұрын
i think thats just wishful thinking my friend, its hard to understand a true psychopath like chigur but i mean the man is a force of reckoning in the screenplay. he shows absolutely no remorse for any of his actions but unlike other psychopaths, chigur doesn't seem to enjoy it either. its almost as if it just needs to be done. im very sure that if the screenplay called for it and the proprietor failed the coin flip, chigur wouldve walked out of that gas station checking his boots.
@Nico-gs8il5 жыл бұрын
@Reunite The British Empire exactly, the old man accepts his fate and calls it. He accepts his judgement and his destiny, and in a way he is saved by that. Which is in contrast to Thano's wife at the end of the film, who refuses to accept that same judgement (a call at a coin toss), and suffers by it. In both cases Chigurh sees himself as an instrument of deliverance of that justice. Or something.

Or...he's just fuckin with him, which also fits the character.
@ArcDevErik4 жыл бұрын
I get your take. I think he would be fine with it either way. The way he sees it, its just. The coin makes the decision not him. If the coin says heads then he should be pitied, a worthless peasant able to finish out his life. If its tails, he should be despised for his weakness, a waste, and removed from the earth. Chigur sees understands this, that he is both, and the coin simply dictates the action to be taken. So it doesn't matter either way. There's always a reason to kill him and there's always a reason to spare him. So the coin will sort it out.
@harizotoh74 жыл бұрын

at 2:10 the startled cough by Chigurh is improvised by Bardem. Brilliant bit of acting that adds to the tension. You instantly shift into "oh shit" mode

I haven't even watched the whole movie, and I already started to like Javier Bardem. "Well done" and "Which it is" are delivered magnificently.

This scene is so crazy. I saw an interview with Bardem and he said Anton's motivation for killing the clerk was not because of the Dallas comment, but because he married into the store. He said, Chigurh's moral compass couldn't abide by that notion. From an acting standpoint, that's an UNREAL way to find motivation for a scene. 🤯🤯🤯

The eerie bit is the man never knew he was just a coin toss away from his death. If you're smart enough you'll notice Chigurh wasn't actually interested in the man until he mentioned he married into the place which tells us more about his behaviour.

The supporting cast in this movie are as good as everything else about it. So many of them appear to be normal people interacting with the starts - not actors and actresses at all. The formal Mexican hunting for Llewelyn, the customs agent at the border, the farmer with the chicken truck, the woman working the desk at Llewelyn's trailer park and how she stares down Chigurh. I am especially impressed with cousin Ellis every time I watch that scene.

FUN FACT: #1: When he chocked on the Cashew, this as the show wasn't scripted but the director kept it rolling to give it even extra juice of ingenuity. What a brilliant scene. Everything was perfect. #2: This was the only scene in the movie that had a tiny bit of music, the rest of the movie didn't have any music to match the drama.
