Customer States: Engine does not start sometimes, you turn the key and nothing happens.
This 2008 Hyundai came it with an intermittent no crank condition. What is happening is the starter and the engine to not turn on when the ignition key is. The failure doesn't happen all of the time. We checked out the simple things first like the battery and the battery cables. The ignition system seemed to work normally and the relay also checked out. The diag went down to the starter motor and we had to use a spliced wire lead to connect a test light for more diagnostic information.
The faulty component was not what you would expect!

I’m a recovering Hyundai tech. There’s a 1 pin connector near the air box on almost every hyundai which is the starter solenoid wire. This is always my go to test point to check starter signal. Those solenoid connectors always break!

That's actually not exclusively Hyundai... The 2010 Ford I'm driving has the same connector clipped to the side of the battery box... it's also a known failure point... not sure but it seems there's some similarity there... but that's just my opinion as a Tech with 30+ yrs exp.

No crank no start on these Hyundais is always an initial 2 step process for me. 1) Try to turn the engine over by hand. 2) If it turns over, put a power probe on that wire and see if it cranks.

@@1337penguinman I have had a few people call me with the no crank no start problem with Ford trucks and I say I only have one question. "Has the battery recently been changed? " The answer is almost always a YES. I tell them that I can tell them what to do to start it but they'll owe me my $20 diagnosis fee when they do..... Out of over a dozen people I've only had one person who didn't bring it.... So, he's no longer a customer.....

Why did you not try a neutral position to see if it would start
@jdesaavedra0432
@jdesaavedra0432 2 ай бұрын
When faced with this situation, I try the jiggle test of the neutral safety switch before rigging lights. My very first failure to start was in my first car, a 1960 Impala back in 1970. Being a kid, I bypassed the switch. it was fun to launch by starting in drive. Those were the days of simple cars--yet they still had failures. Your method achieves the same results with a greater degree of certainty, given the complexity of modern systems.

Ray there is a TSB 17-AT-005 from Hyundai about this issue, and one of the symptoms is "Intermittent no engine crank/no start in “P” or “N” with or without MIL or DTC.". It's a known issue. My old landlord had the same car and issue. You'd have to row it between park and neutral before it would start. More often than not, it starts in neutral vs park.

Old original one gets water in it, and as the safety start is on the bottom, that fails before the display starts to give false readings. Bottom is the safety switch, and the reverse light, top is the trans position switch. Most common would be start failure, but another clue is the reverse lamps either glowing dimly, or being burnt out from being on all the time.

It’s always so much fun watching Ray use the information from AllData to devise a plan to figure out where the problem lies. It’s also comforting that when he couldn’t find the second white wire he did not want to guess where the other wire could be and begin shorting to random pins. With all the data that AllData provides, it must have a very hefty subscription cost, but it’s certainly the best tool in the shop for diagnosing electrical issues. 👍

Alldata is much more reasonable point than many others on the market! They also provide guides to troubleshoot that is interactive for commercial subscriptions and it gives a number of fixes per possible issue. As an example it may tell you that 7 out 10 repairs for no start were the neutral switch 2 were relay and one was corrosion so that you can check the most likely part first. It has way more than wiring diagrams .

Retired ATM tech for over 20 years. Always took pics on arrival and steps during diagnostics. The pics and stateme t of repair was for my history and for any other tech in the the future calls if needed. Worked on every ATM manufactured and sub models. My SLA (service level agreement) was 2 hours on site window after call was generated by customer,with a 4 fix time. The Diagnostic was always using a 7 step plan on every call. Stated with the cables/wiring and worked up to software. You never know what to be the fault. Always used the senses on vision, hear, touch, smell, and sometime taste. Never met a ATM or smart safe that defeated me. I enjoy your video's and narration of the fix. Thank you and I wish we lived closer to you shop. Live in SC.
