When it came to take the "Acting" title off I was told that I was "toxic" that i sucked at the role and for the good of the team i was being transferred out of Engineering and into a Project Manager team. In addition I was threatened with disciplinary action if I didn't accept. On way home from work I stopped at Men's Warehouse and bought two suits. Then started a job search when i got home. This right here is the biggest load of bullshit, at my last job, a coworker who'd been trying for a year for a promotion was given an 'acting director' role with zero increase, after 6 months they hired an outside director and put her back in her role and told her she did amazing but they needed someone with an outside perspective. but during that 6 months, she stepped up so high and so effing hard, our whole team respected her and we told our upper mgmt that because we wanted her to be our permanent boss, she made us more productive and kept everyone happy. they replaced her with an ahole from cisco who literally played in our playground while he was let go and rehired by cisco for 3 months, he treated us like garbage and made several of us quit, if we brought him concerns he'd say 'complain complain complain, that's all you do'. after he quit without notice like we KNEW he would (we warned upper mgmt because we saw he never changed his linkedin and other signs) they asked my coworker to be the acting director AGAIN with the same dangling carrot. She, being optimistic, accepted AGAIN, and then what'd they do? made her do the work and didn't give her the title this time and replaced her a week later with someone's best friend. she gave two weeks notice after that. and during that last 2 weeks they treated her like she was dead. I and 3 others left over it.

They first gave him the position and didn't change his pay for four months during an "introductory" period in which they finally agreed to 90k salary + commission for store performances. After two months, the owner came back and said they actually want to split the role between him and the owner's buddy, and bring his pay back down to just above what he was making as a store manager. He quit on the spot. The business got so bad that after several calls from the owner over weeks, he agreed to come back as a store manager making his 90k salary. The hiring manager assured me we would work on a future title together. Took the job. Asked about a promo at the 2 ½ yr mark and was told that I’m great but dropped the ball a couple of times- very minor but… I didn’t argue. Came back the next year and heard some lame excuse but I didn’t back down. Then the tune changed. Suddenly there was talk about the potential outcomes: 1. I get the promo, 2. I don’t get it, 3. I get a lateral - title change only and no extra $ HR only approved a title change and when they tried to give me more work, I reminded them that it was only a title change to reflect the work I’d already been doing above what was in my job description.

While doing my own job, would go out into the store and fix things, outworked people in their own departments, did janitorial jobs, helped customers, and so on. A manager came to me and asked if I wanted to be an assistant manager. I asked what that required, and they said staying longer hours and having more responsibilities. I asked if there was a pay raise involved. No. I asked if I would be getting paid for the extra hours. No. I was expected to clock out as normal, then keep working for free. The minute he said 'for free' I couldn't help it, and laughed in his face, which he didn't appear to appreciate. I then asked him why would I ever do something like that if there's no benefit for me in it? He glared for a bit, then walked away. Later that year, they played some real dirty games and fired me, claiming all sorts of stuff. The first thing they called was proven fake easily, and the second, and the third. But they kept coming up with stuff until I just gave up and let them do what they wanted.

I was at a company for 8 1/2 years as the solo IT guy. I did Director level Work. I want to ask him for the title of IT Director, with no extra pay, they declined. I made it clear that I wasn’t seeking any extra pay or perks, I just wanted the title because they were selling the company and I needed to have my résumé up after I was gone. They Lied about wanting to give me the title and dragged it out for about two months and then I finally quit.
