The response when I used that line was "Well your store manager feels yoy priced yourself, but I (the regional manager) am not so sure. No other manager (in entirely different locations that have nothing to do with me) even knows who you are. This opportunity is for you to prove yourself to another manager." It's always just BS.

This was me. Acting Manager of my team for a full year. Was told not to apply for any other roles, as I was guaranteed a promotion. Performance reviews before and during were exemplary. When it came to take the "Acting" title off I was told that I was "toxic" that i sucked at the role and for the good of the team i was being transferred out of Engineering and into a Project Manager team. In addition I was threatened with disciplinary action if I didn't accept. On way home from work I stopped at Men's Warehouse and bought two suits. Then started a job search when i got home. Within 2-months I had a new job in another state. They were in complete shock when I gave notice.

And don't forget the fact that you'll be held responsible for all the managerial duties but yet not be allowed any authority to make decisions. And if you do, any decision you make will be immediately countermanded and any good ideas you have will be ignored until your own manager decides that they were their idea in the first place and takes credit for them. In other words, you do someone else's job while they get paid for it and get the credit for it. There's a word for that.

This right here is the biggest load of bullshit, at my last job, a coworker who'd been trying for a year for a promotion was given an 'acting director' role with zero increase, after 6 months they hired an outside director and put her back in her role and told her she did amazing but they needed someone with an outside perspective. but during that 6 months, she stepped up so high and so effing hard, our whole team respected her and we told our upper mgmt that because we wanted her to be our permanent boss, she made us more productive and kept everyone happy. they replaced her with an ahole from cisco who literally played in our playground while he was let go and rehired by cisco for 3 months, he treated us like garbage and made several of us quit, if we brought him concerns he'd say 'complain complain complain, that's all you do'. after he quit without notice like we KNEW he would (we warned upper mgmt because we saw he never changed his linkedin and other signs) they asked my coworker to be the acting director AGAIN with the same dangling carrot. She, being optimistic, accepted AGAIN, and then what'd they do? made her do the work and didn't give her the title this time and replaced her a week later with someone's best friend. she gave two weeks notice after that. and during that last 2 weeks they treated her like she was dead. I and 3 others left over it.

My dad is a Meineke store manager and was promoted to regional manager after they fired the previous guy. They first gave him the position and didn't change his pay for four months during an "introductory" period in which they finally agreed to 90k salary + commission for store performances. After two months, the owner came back and said they actually want to split the role between him and the owner's buddy, and bring his pay back down to just above what he was making as a store manager. He quit on the spot. The business got so bad that after several calls from the owner over weeks, he agreed to come back as a store manager making his 90k salary. Never let companies screw you over if you know they be screwed without you.

Spent years as a “temporary” worker. They love to dangle the carrot in front of people to get free labor out of them. I’ve seen a lot of people do unpaid overtime as contingent staff to get that permanent job. I interviewed seven times at that company, four of those positions I was already filling as a temp over a period of about five years. Made it through the interview process to the end and never got hired. Why? Never found out.

Not only are you saving lives, you deserve an award for educating workers on the fact that most company interactions are premeditated, fully researched, and calculated moves to advance the company/organization agenda, whether it helps the employee or not. And as shown here, the system is set up to use free skilled labor for months - even years - on the basis of a lie. A lie that will be denied, although at that point it would be too late. Thank you so much! My future in the workplace will be absolutely different and I may actually have a chance at a position with pay and benefits that I actually want.

While interviewing I was told that a promo was absolutely possible. We discussed potential titles and I didn’t like the one proposed as it was too general and could be an entry level title. The hiring manager assured me we would work on a future title together. Took the job. Asked about a promo at the 2 ½ yr mark and was told that I’m great but dropped the ball a couple of times- very minor but… I didn’t argue. Came back the next year and heard some lame excuse but I didn’t back down. Then the tune changed. Suddenly there was talk about the potential outcomes: 1. I get the promo, 2. I don’t get it, 3. I get a lateral - title change only and no extra $ HR only approved a title change and when they tried to give me more work, I reminded them that it was only a title change to reflect the work I’d already been doing above what was in my job description.

I couldn't quit because it was a very small industry and nowhere to go...some years later the guy who made the decision said he made a mistake and should have taken me, but that was small consolation. Later, when I became a department head, over half of my guys told me I was the best manager they ever had. And when I eventually quit my job (by now in a different company) and retired because they pissed me off so much, half of my guys kept in touch with me for years afterward which was pretty nice I thought.

In a place like this, The 90 days is to give them time to find and hire a manager from a totally unrelated field (say, you do customer service for an insurance company, and they were an Amazon warehouse manager) The person has a degree and six sigma training, but their skills barely translate inte a rusl day to day, because they know almost nothing about the actual work being done in this field... And then after having downte work successfully for 90 days and being passed up, they want you to train that person for free while also continuing to do your own daily work. Which is maddening, because if you did the job well enough to train someone on it, why were you not good enough to be promoted to it?

Got this treatment from a fast food chain I worked for. I was assistant manager and our general manager got fired. I was asked to be acting store manager to prove I could handle it. I was store manager for a month with the backing of the vast majority of the crew but when time came to announce the store manager they gave it to another general manager because her store was closing, it was closing because she ran it into the ground!! I didn't work there long after that.

Just cause you're interim doesn't mean you get it. Transferring a manager likely saves them termination costs. But they obviously thought you were decent, shouldn't have left unless you had a better offer IMO.

If she hasn't proven herself already then they shouldn't ask her to step into the role for free.

I worked in a dept where a manager boasted to a worker that they use the carrot and stick approach and maybe you’ll get promoted, maybe not, it’ll be years of that approach etc. He was such an ahole.

In my job if you're a regular employee and asked to cover a supervisor’s shift, if you do, they are required to give you the supervisor pay role for that particular shift.

I had this happen to me. Worked for 5 years at a job. Had one of the best departments in the region. While doing my own job, would go out into the store and fix things, outworked people in their own departments, did janitorial jobs, helped customers, and so on. A manager came to me and asked if I wanted to be an assistant manager. I asked what that required, and they said staying longer hours and having more responsibilities. I asked if there was a pay raise involved. No. I asked if I would be getting paid for the extra hours. No. I was expected to clock out as normal, then keep working for free. The minute he said 'for free' I couldn't help it, and laughed in his face, which he didn't appear to appreciate. I then asked him why would I ever do something like that if there's no benefit for me in it? He glared for a bit, then walked away. Later that year, they played some real dirty games and fired me, claiming all sorts of stuff. The first thing they called was proven fake easily, and the second, and the third. But they kept coming up with stuff until I just gave up and let them do what they wanted.

I was at a company for 8 1/2 years as the solo IT guy. I did Director level Work. I want to ask him for the title of IT Director, with no extra pay, they declined. I made it clear that I wasn’t seeking any extra pay or perks, I just wanted the title because they were selling the company and I needed to have my résumé up after I was gone. They Lied about wanting to give me the title and dragged it out for about two months and then I finally quit.
