Hi James, my name is Scott, the inventor of the Stern Saver. I own the patent and have owned, used and tested out products for over 15 years and unfortunately the homemade version you made in this video will not work over time and here’s why. The epoxy you used will not form a reliable, permanent, structural bond with the HDPE marine board because of its lack of surface activity. The rough texture of the board does not provide extra bite for the adhesive. Which brings up the second issue I see here, the lack of threads inside the pockets you drilled in the back of the block as well as how shallow they are. Without threads in those pockets, there is no mechanical bond with the plastic, and your block will eventually fall off and you will lose that transducer. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me. And for those who are thinking of making one of these at home, I have no problem with it, but chances are you won’t be able to machine the plastic in the way our CNC machines do. The whole idea behind the Stern Saver’s success is the mechanical bond between the adhesive and the plastic, which is simply not achieved here in this homemade version. Also, by the time you round up all the tools and materials to make one and the time to make it, you will be hours into the project and have something really inferior to the Stern Saver. Our epoxy we supply is much better than the one shown in this video, and Stern Savers come complete with everything you need to install it in 10 minutes or less. Not to be confused with the poor quality knock off of our product that uses double sided tape and non-marine grade PVC foam board. We have had many people confuse that product as one of ours, only to have them fall off their boats. At Stern Saver, we use King brand StarBoard and West System epoxy, the two absolute best products for the best possible outcome. You take a risk of losing your transducer is you go with anything less. He have sold hundreds of thousands of mounts with an extraordinary success rate so far in 14 years of being in business.

Where the fuck do you get a stern saver with epoxy? I’m in Canada and the stern pad they called. It has no epoxy. You just peel the thing off and stick it on.

That might make sense Scott but your product is backordered in the U.S. as of June 2024.

Late to the party here, but I was looking thru videos on how to mount a transducer on my jon boat without drilling holes in it and watched this video and a video where someone used a product called Stern Saver. In all honesty, if a person has a garage and does a lot of handi-work, they probably have everything they need to get this done. If not, the stern saver is a good option for a person who can DIY. More impressive than the video is the fact that the stern saver inventor left a "book" sized comment and you didn't delete it. Shows you were trying to help us fishermen out, where that guy is just trying to help $$ out of my wallet. Anyway, thanks for sharing and keep the lines tight!

I’ve been using 3M VHB double sided foam tape for decades now. Consider that as an option, I used it to attach my 12’ cherry bar rail to the granite bar when my fabricator didn’t route the correct profile on the front edge. That was in 2006, no issues at all with it. I’ve also used it all over our travel trailers.

I am late to this video but you could have drilled the holes out just a hair and push the same size bolt thru the transm but before you do that smire jb weld around the holes insert bolts and drill same holes thru said umhw to match . then counter sink the holes for lock nuts .then mount transducer to the umhw n the transm with nylon lock nuts make sure your bolts are just long enough to bolt the transducer to the transom

What is the thickness of the marine board? 1/2", 3/4" or 1" ? I would assume thickest is best?

This is what you want to use when you need polyethylene to stick to any surface…. West System 655-8 G/flex Epoxy Adhesive This stuff works well. I be used it on one of my SUNDolphin pro120 (polyethylene) project boats. Guy that had it before me put more holes on this thing then a slice of Swiss cheese. Used it to fill cracks, 3” holes from mounting transducer plate…guy went nuts making holes on the boat. I use gflex on all of the holes, cracks big and small. Worked fantastic.

those boats are so cheap they don't even put transducer brackets welded to the transom. that's the way it should really be done. at the factory! along with welded on anode brackets.

This is still not better than the old transducer board with 2 screws. It's a pain to get this thing off when you make too many mistakes or are changing transducers. The 2 screws board easily comes off and is replaced with a new one. You need to have the mindset that this is a permanent part of the boat. No one complains about all the below the waterline holes that come from the factory on any transducers, thru-hull fittings. cable mounts, motor mounts, ladders, etc.

All you have to do is epoxy the old holes up if you need to make a change or correct an error.

I have actually passed on buying second hand boats with too many holes in the transom. Furthermore, the mounting boards that required two screws to install it still bout damaging holes in your boat that will eventually leak as that silicone breaks down.

Marine board is known for not being very good for sticking to things. Like nothing sticks to it that’s what I was told from a marine store. I’m gonna try this, but I’m skeptical.
