Only his father's return saves him. 2020 - Jedi MASTER Luke finally shows up in his prime. Seriously.... I waited FORTY-THREE YEARS to finally see Luke reach his full potential. In these "sequels", Rey showed up and started kicking everyone's ass almost immediately. She somehow went from being a force-sensitive junk collector to Jedi Master in like 3 years. That fight is more or less a tie until Luke turns to the Darkside loses control briefly and chops his fathers hand off in a fit of rage. Then Luke has no answer for Palpatines force lightning gets fried and loses the fight. This is after training on his own and mentoring by top Jedi teachers. The result was an ass kicking by a well trained force user. eh, sort of. He's not really a Mary Sue no but he only fully loses once when he starts training with Yoda to be a Jedi and that's when he gets his hand cut off by Vader. He chose to lose to Palpatine and it was what won him Vader in the process. He fucks off his training against Yoda's better judgment and when he comes back Yoda is dying and unable to train him . Yet next movie Luke is suddenly a "Jedi master like my father before me" and can suddenly beat Vader in a fight. To be hones though if you look through all the lore the Force is really just codified plot armor in general and Rey's abilities make as much sense as they need to in canon even if it would have been better for them not to lean on the Force as a plot device. There are multiple cases of Jedi who used the force as a crutch to win against stronger foes. All you really need is to know how to meditate and you can let the Force act directly through you to it's own ends. That does mean if it wants you to lose you're gonna lose though. The force can show you the future a a macro and micro scale, Prophecy's and Battle Sense, but it can pull away that support as well. It gives the Jedi a vague enough prophecy to literally lead to the wholesale slaughter of all the Jedi the Sith can manage. In the extended lore (legends now) there was a Jedi who specialized in letting the force act through him that fought a powerful foe and the force sent him a vision of the future that in him dying here it would lead to a Sith turning from the darkside later on before leaving him to either accept that fate willingly and die or die trying to stop it.

For more support of Luke's piloting skills is that he owned a T-16 Skyhopper on Tatooine, an airspeeder made by the Incom Corporation that also made the very T-65B X-wing he flew later on in the film. Being made by the same company, the Skyhopper had a similar control scheme to the X-Wing as well, which translated to his ability to competently fly during the Death Star battle. Another side note is that the snowspeeder Luke flies in ESB is also made by the Incom Corporation, so he may just be familiar with Incom produced vehicles.

I agree, he had potential but it was wasted monumentally, he got turned into comic relief side character who is so into Rey he can't shut up about her and constantly goes out of his way for her (I would have bought it if there was some romantic tension between the two, but it is so one sided), plus being an ex-stormtrooper was interesting, though nothing came of that, he was supposed to be trained and conditioned to be first order's killing machine since being a child, but it has no effect on him or his personality whatsoever, not to mention that somehow mission of Jakku was his first battle?! Also he was supposedly only trained in blasters but fights hand to hand and has no piloting skills so he needs Poe (but in Last Jedi he pilots those fighter jets somehow) and he apparently is giving exposition knowledge when necessary when moment requires, 'oh I wasa janitor on STarkiller base', 'oh I was cleaning up the room where the hyperspace tracker is on Supremacy' but of course he fails to mention it beforehand, there is simply no consistency about him in the sequels!

Anakin: And those two control the pitch? Naboo pilot: You catch on pretty quick." Short scene but how meaningful :). Even little Anakin being good with technology is quite justified, he was a slave working basically for 'mechanic shop', selling parts of various complicated machinery, from droids to hyperdrives and spaceship parts, engines and advanced robotics, he had lot of experience with technology for his young years, he was a slave since birth and worked for Watto since he was three years old. In contrast Rey being good with tech is less likely, because she was a scrapper really,, she wasn't even working on a proper industrial scrapyard where the stuff from all over galaxy would be brought to be dismantled, not, she and many others on Jakku were simply looting a decades old crashsite leftovers from a battle, it wasn't even a proper scrapyard where they would have heavy machinery or anything (otherwise they would have picked the crashsite dry years before, the scrappers of Jakku are woefully underequipped) no it was a crashsite and apparently entire economy of that settlement on Jakku revolved around this (damn this planet makes no sense), most of the time Rey would have been salvaging raw materials rather than useful stuff, the parts that would be most of the time heavily damaged and needing to be refit to reuse later, and at best she should have been only familiar with imperial tech, since those were wrecks of imperial stardestroyers and their military hardware.

There's also the part where Rey is really impressed when Finn tells her he's with the Resistance, but seems completely clueless to the danger she's in when the First Order shows up. If she doesn't know or understand who the Resistance is fighting, why is she so impressed? Then she barely escapes Jakku with her life, but wants to go back. She seems to be completely clueless that she'd be killed if she returns to Jakku. If it weren't for Finn, she'd be dead. (That's right, the 'perfect' girl had to be saved by the guy.) How many times did it take Finn grabbing her arm to get her to run before she figured out she needed to stop fighting him, and start running? Yet, she's able to figure out how to fly a ship she's never flown before, as well as fix it, and use both the Force and a lightsaber well enough to defend herself against a trained Dark Side Force user. It doesn't make any sense. As far as her training with Luke. . . Where was the training? She spent most of her time on that island, arguing with Luke about helping the Resistance, trying to convince him to train her, and doing Force Zoom calls with Kylo Ren. We saw more actual training going on when she was with Leia, the one who quit her training. So what kind of training did she get really? She was running, jumping, and making things float. She got distracted and didn't finish. Yet, somehow magically she's more powerful than Luke, who used the Force to project his younger image across the galaxy to fight Kylo Ren? She needed all the past Jedi to help her destroy the clone of Sidious. She didn't do that on her own. These people need to admit the character was poorly written and move on.

Why Resistance, that name implies paramilitary organization fighting AGAINST established regime, does First Order control any significant portion fo the galaxy? Do they attack New Republic territories, if so why the proper military does not combat them? Why First Order is so much more powerful than Empire if they are formed from it's remnants, how the hell do they build something so insane as Starkiller base when two deathstars were so huge effort for the empire, which controlled already nearly entire galaxy!! What makes both Anakin and Luke compelling protagonists is not only are they flawed people, but they faced trials and dilemmas that a lot of us have to go through in life. Anakin is a husband and father who tried to protect his wife at any cost, even if it meant having to join the Dark Side and do things that are morally reprehensible. Luke is a teenager who craved adventure and a higher purpose, only for him to realize how hard and cruel his journey truly is, and how much he'll lose along the way. They're written to feel as human as possible, and because we're able to relate to their struggle we're more invested in their journey and what they have to go through. Rey, on the other hand, is written solely to be a role-model for the female audience that Disney tries to attract and pander to, and nothing more. Feminists have this messed-up mind-set of women being perfect angels who can do no wrong, and Rey suffers as character because of this. She's not allowed to have flaws, do things that are morally questionable, lose anything important, or overcome any challenge that can help her grow. That's why she's a Mary Sue, and Anakin and Luke aren't.

Someone said the same about Anakin. Anakin Skywalker. A mary sue. The guy everything always works out for, always makes the right decisions and is loved by everyone...

The only thing I might disagree with is Yoda getting his ass handed to him. Yoda vs Sidious was a fairly even fight. Yoda was better with a blade and Sidious had the high ground and debatably more force power.

You saying it was high ground because Yoda was smaller? :P

Woketivists: "Rey IS a strong character! She's not a Mary Sue!" Everyone else: "You literally had to give her the Skywalker name because she isn't a strong character."

She doesn't have the Skywalker name. She has the Palpatine name. Rise of Skywalker was in reference to Ben Solo, who is a Skywalker by blood, whose redemption at the end of the movie is what enables him and Rey Palpatine, granddaughter of former Emperor Palpatine, to defeat the newly arisen Sith Revanent.

Luke wasn't a Mary Sue. He had training and an arc all ready for him
