1977 - I was a little kid watching force-sensitive farmboy Luke's introduction to the force. 1980 - Padawan learner Luke gets his ass handed to him by Vader who toys with him like a cat playing with a mouse. 1983 - Jedi Knight Luke is still being outclassed by Vader and the emperor. Only his father's return saves him. 2020 - Jedi MASTER Luke finally shows up in his prime. Seriously.... I waited FORTY-THREE YEARS to finally see Luke reach his full potential. In these "sequels", Rey showed up and started kicking everyone's ass almost immediately. She somehow went from being a force-sensitive junk collector to Jedi Master in like 3 years. PS - Wanna see the same Mary Sue tale, except it's set in China? Watch Mulan. I expect this is the new formula that Disney has settled on for their princesses. Instead of the old "rags to riches" tale, it's now the "rags to god-like powers" tale.

Rey isn’t just a Mary Sue, she is the Mary Sue. Her entire character embodies the characteristics of a Mary Sue. She barely struggles and defeats some of the most powerful force users with less than a year of training. She gets Anakin and Leia’s Lightsaber, Po’s droid, Chewbacca’s ship, and even steals the Skywalker name. The ‘Rise’ of Skywalker ends with a literal descendant of Palpatine taking the Skywalker name. Its worse than that. Even after becoming a Jedi when fighting Jabbas guards its tough fight and he almost loses to the Rankor in the shootout he gets hit in the robot hand. He gets captured by Ewoks. Luke is unable to convince his father to leave Palpatine. The Emperor taunts Luke into trying to kill him which starts the fight with Vader. That fight is more or less a tie until Luke turns to the Darkside loses control briefly and chops his fathers hand off in a fit of rage. Then Luke has no answer for Palpatines force lightning gets fried and loses the fight. This is after training on his own and mentoring by top Jedi teachers. The result was an ass kicking by a well trained force user. Battle hardened well trained Anakin ended up dismembered and burnt to a crisp after making questionable decisions and feeling overconfident about his powers. You kind of wonder if these people even watched the movies or did they just hear about them.

AND (as Literature Devil said in his video), Luke wouldn't have even SURVIVED in the first movie if not for his companions! 1) The Tuskan Raiders probably would have killed him if Ben hadn't shown up. 2) The thugs in the cantina would have killed him if Obi-Wan hadn't saved him. 3) Han's, Chewie's & yes, even Leia's actions allowed them all to escape the Death Star. (sure he contributed, but that is it) 4) Even R2 & C3PO saved him from the trash compactor! 5) Oh & Han & Chewie showing up to get Vader off of Luke's back is what ALLOWED Luke to make that shot! Luke had a total of THREE "force" moments in Star Wars. When he blocked the practice drones tiny energy shots when he couldn't see. (admittedly impressive & even cool) When (encouraged by Ghost Obi-wan) did a powerful strafing run on one small portion of the Death Star during the assault. (slightly enchancing his targeting skill & combat instincts) And making that final shot! (again encouraged by Ghost Obi-wan and again slightly enchancing his targeting skill) THAT IS IT! In Force Awakens? No one ELSE would have survived if not for REY! (basically, the reverse situation!) SHE never needed ANY help from anyone else! In fact, everyone else was just a burden to her. Even the "rescue" from Star Killer base was unneeded because she escaped on her own! So? . . . .WHO is the Mary Sue?

eh, sort of. He's not really a Mary Sue no but he only fully loses once when he starts training with Yoda to be a Jedi and that's when he gets his hand cut off by Vader. He chose to lose to Palpatine and it was what won him Vader in the process. He fucks off his training against Yoda's better judgment and when he comes back Yoda is dying and unable to train him . Yet next movie Luke is suddenly a "Jedi master like my father before me" and can suddenly beat Vader in a fight. To be hones though if you look through all the lore the Force is really just codified plot armor in general and Rey's abilities make as much sense as they need to in canon even if it would have been better for them not to lean on the Force as a plot device. There are multiple cases of Jedi who used the force as a crutch to win against stronger foes. All you really need is to know how to meditate and you can let the Force act directly through you to it's own ends. That does mean if it wants you to lose you're gonna lose though. The force can show you the future a a macro and micro scale, Prophecy's and Battle Sense, but it can pull away that support as well. It gives the Jedi a vague enough prophecy to literally lead to the wholesale slaughter of all the Jedi the Sith can manage. In the extended lore (legends now) there was a Jedi who specialized in letting the force act through him that fought a powerful foe and the force sent him a vision of the future that in him dying here it would lead to a Sith turning from the darkside later on before leaving him to either accept that fate willingly and die or die trying to stop it.

I watched Ep. The Y-wings of Golden squadron were the ones supposed to take the shot... But as you know, they were all destroyed. It was only then that the Red squadron was forced to take the shot, and Porkins' tragic death and brave sacrifice will never be forgotten. This is nothing new, since second wave feminism hit the scene they've demanded characters that are already heroes or competent out of the gate because they believe themselves to be. They don't listen to anyone but themselves they refuse training and they never understand why they aren't in charge minutes after walking into a situation. They believe that "The Hero's Journey" means "I'm a hero and this is my journey" instead of "I learned how to be a hero along the way." They turned it into the Cinderella tale of "I was already perfect but no one paid attention." Sad thing is Carol Danvers use to be a good character, before she became Captain Marvel. Had all kinds of struggles from losing friends and lovers, her first set of powers and emotional attachment to her old memories after fighting Rogue, being mentally manipulating and physically abused by an extradimensional being, and fighting against alcohalism. With a little work she could have a great character, but now is just trash.

Luke was a whiny brat with potential in his 1st movie. He got beat up and failed all throughout his 2nd movie. Only in his 3rd movie, after pain, lose, hard work and a character arc, did Luke became the wise and skilled Jedi that won the trilogy. Anyone that says this sort of character arc makes him a Mary Sue is an idiot that has not even a shred of idea what the term means or how story telling works.

And Luke grew strong. By the Battle of the Sarlaac Pit, he was almost a Jedi. Watching him go crazy with his green lightsaber was awesome. For "not yet a Jedi" he did well. Thankfully for us, Lawrence Kasdan chose to SHOW us how Luke became strong rather than tell us.

A New Hope is very good at presenting Luke’s character and how he evolves throughout the story. He starts out as passive on Tatooine without any personal control or agency. He is basically just along for the ride for half of the movie. It isn’t until Ben leaves the group on the Death Star that Luke evolves from being a passive to active character when he initiates the rescue of Leia. Throughout the Death Star escape we see him improvise, adapt and overcome and grow as a character. Then at the end of the movie we see him taking the moral high ground for what is right when he joins the Red Squadron. A beautiful character arc, really.

For more support of Luke's piloting skills is that he owned a T-16 Skyhopper on Tatooine, an airspeeder made by the Incom Corporation that also made the very T-65B X-wing he flew later on in the film. Being made by the same company, the Skyhopper had a similar control scheme to the X-Wing as well, which translated to his ability to competently fly during the Death Star battle. Another side note is that the snowspeeder Luke flies in ESB is also made by the Incom Corporation, so he may just be familiar with Incom produced vehicles.

I agree, he had potential but it was wasted monumentally, he got turned into comic relief side character who is so into Rey he can't shut up about her and constantly goes out of his way for her (I would have bought it if there was some romantic tension between the two, but it is so one sided), plus being an ex-stormtrooper was interesting, though nothing came of that, he was supposed to be trained and conditioned to be first order's killing machine since being a child, but it has no effect on him or his personality whatsoever, not to mention that somehow mission of Jakku was his first battle?! Also he was supposedly only trained in blasters but fights hand to hand and has no piloting skills so he needs Poe (but in Last Jedi he pilots those fighter jets somehow) and he apparently is giving exposition knowledge when necessary when moment requires, 'oh I wasa janitor on STarkiller base', 'oh I was cleaning up the room where the hyperspace tracker is on Supremacy' but of course he fails to mention it beforehand, there is simply no consistency about him in the sequels!

Anakin: And those two control the pitch? Naboo pilot: You catch on pretty quick." Short scene but how meaningful :). There's also the part where Rey is really impressed when Finn tells her he's with the Resistance, but seems completely clueless to the danger she's in when the First Order shows up. If she doesn't know or understand who the Resistance is fighting, why is she so impressed? Then she barely escapes Jakku with her life, but wants to go back. She seems to be completely clueless that she'd be killed if she returns to Jakku. If it weren't for Finn, she'd be dead. (That's right, the 'perfect' girl had to be saved by the guy.) How many times did it take Finn grabbing her arm to get her to run before she figured out she needed to stop fighting him, and start running? Yet, she's able to figure out how to fly a ship she's never flown before, as well as fix it, and use both the Force and a lightsaber well enough to defend herself against a trained Dark Side Force user. It doesn't make any sense. As far as her training with Luke. . . Where was the training? She spent most of her time on that island, arguing with Luke about helping the Resistance, trying to convince him to train her, and doing Force Zoom calls with Kylo Ren. We saw more actual training going on when she was with Leia, the one who quit her training. So what kind of training did she get really? She was running, jumping, and making things float. She got distracted and didn't finish. Yet, somehow magically she's more powerful than Luke, who used the Force to project his younger image across the galaxy to fight Kylo Ren? She needed all the past Jedi to help her destroy the clone of Sidious. She didn't do that on her own. These people need to admit the character was poorly written and move on.

Luke Skywalker has a believable story arc wherein he has to work hard in the beginning and train in order to get a handle on his powers. However one feels about Rey, I think it's fair to say that her arc objectively has less tension than Anakin or Luke's--she isn't nearly as challenged as they are and her training is even more brief than Luke's was ( until ROS retcons TLJ and shows a training sequence in a transparent attempt to answer to the criticism )

What makes both Anakin and Luke compelling protagonists is not only are they flawed people, but they faced trials and dilemmas that a lot of us have to go through in life. Anakin is a husband and father who tried to protect his wife at any cost, even if it meant having to join the Dark Side and do things that are morally reprehensible. Luke is a teenager who craved adventure and a higher purpose, only for him to realize how hard and cruel his journey truly is, and how much he'll lose along the way. They're written to feel as human as possible, and because we're able to relate to their struggle we're more invested in their journey and what they have to go through. Rey, on the other hand, is written solely to be a role-model for the female audience that Disney tries to attract and pander to, and nothing more. Feminists have this messed-up mind-set of women being perfect angels who can do no wrong, and Rey suffers as character because of this. She's not allowed to have flaws, do things that are morally questionable, lose anything important, or overcome any challenge that can help her grow. That's why she's a Mary Sue, and Anakin and Luke aren't.

I use to say. "Luke is so whiney and can't control his anger." But then I realize, that is what made him relatable. Most men or humans are like that and we need to work on that. He is not a Mary Sue because he isn't perfect like Rey.

Luke is probably the farthest thing from a Mary Sue that you ever get. I am neither white, male, nor superpowered; and yet I feel for Luke and shedded tears happily for him when he refused to turn to darkness. At the same time, all Sequel Trilogy characters (Imposter Luke included) at best elicit apathy from me, and at worst a desire for them to all die horribly, painfully, and as quickly as possible.

In ESB Luke spent a month training with Yoda. Between ESB and RoJ Luke spent *five years* further training with Yoda, a 900 year old jedi grand master. Rey spent *one year* practicing with Leia, who isn't a Jedi master and thuse not a proper teacher.

'Member when Luke got his ass handed to him by Sand People? Obi Wan saved him. 'Member when Luke tried to save his family? He doesn't. 'Member when Luke accidentally started crap in Mos Eisley? Obi Wan saved him. 'Member when Luke attempts to rescue Leia from Prison? Leia saves him. 'Member when Luke was going to be crushed by the Trash Compactor? R2 saves him. 'Member when Luke and Leia are stuck across a Death Star bridge? Luke saves them! This is his first "win" in the movie. (Unless you include shooting Tie Fighters with Han) Up to this point Luke has not been able to do much besides have good intentions. Wedge Saves Luke in the dogfight above the Death Star, and Han Saves Luke to allow Luke to make the killing shot. Everybody need to save Luke through out the first film, over and over again. All he really did was make the killing shot and swing over a bridge. Also in the movie, Luke repeatedly says he is a good pilot, everyone just sort of ignores him. (It was like the ONE thing he was good at in the first movie.)

She doesn't have the Skywalker name. She has the Palpatine name. Rise of Skywalker was in reference to Ben Solo, who is a Skywalker by blood, whose redemption at the end of the movie is what enables him and Rey Palpatine, granddaughter of former Emperor Palpatine, to defeat the newly arisen Sith Revanent.
