I have followed you for years on Monet Cafe and KZbin, but I need to thank you again for your fun, intelligent and lovely videos. I haven't ever given the hard pastels a "solo" (always the supporting cast) but you've made it very tempting! Many thanks for all your hard work and kindness.

Is white charcoal and white pastel the same material? A good white is either titanium oxide or zinc oxide
@monetcafe3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm just now seeing your comment. And white pastel is a bit different that white charcoal. Supposedly, white charcoal doesn't contain "white pigment" ... just chalk, whereas pastels contain white pigment. I think the pastels (good ones anyway) apply more like butter.

Wonderful, Susan. Can you tell me what kind of printer you use? I've been meaning to ask for a while.
@monetcafe3 жыл бұрын
Hi sweetheart, I can’t remember if I answered this question for you on Patreon. Are use an Epson ET -3750 I like this printer because it has refillable ink cartridges and I save a lot of money versus buying the cartridges for regular printers. I like the print quality but I don’t typically print any of my work for anything other than references.

What do you recommend for fixatives. I understand that they aren't recommended highly but when I am just practicing and playing around learning the pastel gets everywhere and in these cases I would like to spray to avoid the pastels covering everything. Thank you.
@lmnop6363 жыл бұрын
I think using a wet wipe might be more helpful there... you can wipe down your work area and your fingers as you go along... and tapping your paper or board on your table and then wiping the residue off may also help or propping a piece of foil or plastic at the bottom of your paper to catch the residue may help too.
@monetcafe3 жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia, Sounds like you may have heard that many pastel artists choose not to use fixative because it darkens the final piece, which is absolutely true. However, you can spray very light coats during the painting process if you want to set what you've painted. The fixative gives a little extra grit to the surface so you can keep painting. But I do stress to be careful in the application and maybe give a sample painting a try first. I never spray at the end, but I store my pastel paintings in either clear plastic bags (with a piece of foamcore cut to size for stability). I get my bags from www.clearbags.com and I order them slightly larger than standard sizes. I think you have to go to "photography and art" and then "Crystal Clear Bags" when you go to the website in order to find the bags. Oh, and the other reply to your question had some good tips too!!! Hope that helps!
