The way China goes about mobile payment is so much better than the US. Here is the US, if a merchant wants to accept Apply Pay or Android Pay, they would have to upgrade their POS device to accept NFC. This is an unnecessary and expensive barrier for adoption. On top of that, it can not support remote payment like when you want to tip Gweilo 60. In China, all a merchant need to do is to print a QR code on a piece of cheap paper. That's why adoption rate is so far ahead than in the US.

Check out Chase Pay in the US, it’s QR codes like China. Same with Walmart Pay. Remember the US is also already cashless, we just use debit cards. All WeChat Pay and Alipay is, is just a debit card in the form of an app. Because it still ACHs out of your bank account.

RedLight GreenArrow I feel like there's a threshold of the mobile payment coverage rate. Once it goes over the rate, you no longer need to carry cash or wallet at all. I still carry cash and a few credit cards when I am in US, but in China I feel confident that those are unnecessary. Besides, some shops do use QR codes payment, like Walmart and Starbucks, but that can only be used in those shops and you need to have the app for each of them, that's a pain point to me.

China is advancing in another area of mobile payments: facial ID/recognition. When this is completed, you don't even need your handphone with you for payments because the facial recognition/scan machines could discern your identity and you just key in the codes for payments.

I don't think I have ever seen a person cutting meat clean their hands but yes it is much more safe not having to carry cash. I think rather than getting robbed you are more likely to have your pocket picked. The crimes like robbery in China are very few so it is not an issue. It is nice not having to hit the ATM up for cash every week or so like before.

The same is available in india too, yes it is not accepted everywhere but in most places it is available. we use Google Pay and phonepay and Paytm. In major cities most young people use them.

In 2017, visiting Chongqing, I got a Chinese SIM and got the hotel to exchange money into my WeChat pay. In 2018, I got a Chinese student here to exchange some RMB. However in March 2019, both WeChat and Alipay disabled my QR codes from receiving, but I was still allowed to give "red packets" but could not receive any. In 2019 on my trip to Fujian, I got a Chinese SIM and was able to use QR codes again. Recently I hear some rules have been relaxed to allow foreign credit cards to be used.

Thanks for the video. I see why WeChat is so popular and wide-spread in China, because it is really easy and cheap for merchants to adopt the system - just sign up and print a QR code, simple and easy, no need to buy expensive equipment or anything.

It seems kind of cool but I don't see what this method of payment has to offer. In the US I take out my credit card from my wallet and either swipe it or insert the chip end and they've modified it lately to make it finish transacting in 2 seconds. Nobody signs a receipt unless it's a store with older credit card readers. All of my credit cards get cash back rewards that are quite generous. It's a lot faster than what your wife was doing with her phone and if someone tries to fraudulently make purchases on a credit card I can always call the issuer and get it resolved. Does buying with WeChat or AliPay have cash back rewards or safeguards like credit cards do?

How much would you and merchant need to pay the under laying Visa/Mastercard plate form? The merchants gets paid on the spot, instead of an overnight transaction from the bank. No need to pay an EFTPOS terminal makes it efficient enough to tiny dealers to accept this kind of payments. Busking on the street can actually take advantage of these plate form. Now try to accept credit card when you busking. This replaces cash, there is no need for charge back.

Even if your in a small village in rural China they accept alipay and wechat. People still have credit cards and and bank cards and these are accepted at most larger stores but not in the little ma and pa outlets.

I'm thinking about teaching in China before too long, went to download wechat to use here in Canada to contact some potential employers... I found their privacy policy and information sharing policies very concerning. I would use it in China because it seems to be almost a necessity, but I'm not going to use it while I'm in Canada because I don't really need to.

Have you seen the long list of "permissions' you agree to when installing WeChat app on your phone? Among them - take pictures and videos, record audio, your precise location and BODY SENSORS (like heart rate monitors)...

@@robertsmithers9059 You can disable those permissions which you concern about, but some of the function won't work. take pictures and videos --- WeChat Pay to scan QR code, or share pictures & short video clip in friend circle record audio ---- WeChat audio calling your precise location --- Realtime location sharing with friends BODY SENSORS (like heart rate monitors) --- WeChat Health, you can share your exercise stats in your friend circle.

You don't actually need to show that to the merchant. After the transaction is fulfilled, the merchant will receive a sound 'DING' & message on his phone, so that merchant can tell he has received it. You can hear the sound when the lady paid for the soup.

There are numbers of apps or digital wallets that you could use to pay things online or via mobile, however the wechat pay and Alipay are the two extremely popular and widely used by people, adopted by merchants, to an extent that we can ignore the others. It's pretty much enough for merchant just show up the Wechat Pay or Alipay QR code so that they can already receive money from everyone, so why bother to look further at least no need for now.
