Do you think the bicycle industry will ever get back to how it was, or do you think that there is a price correction going on everywhere including cars bikes and outdoor equipment and people are just plain tired of over paying too much
@jamesmckenzie35323 күн бұрын
I think it's over for most of the bicycling industry. The Pandemic crushed it with a huge boom and the resulting bust. I'm hoping that the industry will recover over the next 12 months.

@@GCPerformance18 I personally think they will sell anything at what ever price they can get for items just to move it! I believe there will be a day off reckoning to come and a big crash with closures of most companies!

The most vivid Black Friday memory that sticks in my head was seeing the parking lot of my local Best Buy littered with trash. Bargain hunters took advantage of deals on big screen TVs. In order for them to fit in their vehicles the TVs were taken out boxes discarding the cardboard and packaging material to blow away in the breeze. Truly sickening.
@Kay0Bot3 күн бұрын
Omg....I didn't think of this. The TV was too big and I called a family member with a bigger vehicle. I should have just removed the box!

I seem to never be comfortable paying full price for cycling gear. It always seems like there are sales on most things so I just hold out. Or find a good alternative that is on sale. I feel like most things are 30/40% overpriced

Same. I stalk and bookmark gear I want and wait for a sale. Including my bike.

For me it’s because at the end of the day, it’s a bicycle. It’s just marked up 40-50% from the manufacturer . I’m always a big hold out and never get it for retail either.

I dont like periodic sales, I'd much rather just have a fair price all the time.

I definitely agree with the 90s, maybe even earlier. This morning, we watched an old Kmart BF video, and it was amazing to see how families shopped together and how much we have changed-for the better or worse.
@cup_and_cone2 күн бұрын
Black Friday is dying everywhere in retail, not just the bike industry... dilution from ongoing sales and week long Black Friday events have ruined the novelty of it. There's no pressure to buy on Black Friday when consumers know they can get near the same pricing a couple weeks later.
@hobscotch61613 күн бұрын
Zero interest from me in the prices I am seeing, they are still too high, and I think classing $1400 as a budget wheel set says it all.. I am also questioning why is that manufacturing processes become more refined as with Carbon yet prices never seem to align?, why is my 1500 quid carbon bike from a few years ago now 4000 with what I would think is a cheaper production cost?.

Another great analysis. Something to consider: MSRPs increased during covid due to both high demand and low supply, and today demand is less and supply has recovered (for now). But MSRPs got stuck at the high point -- manufacturers and retailers slapped sale prices on everything rather than reduce prices to meet actual demand. So unless manufactures figure out how to unwind their inflated MSRPs, we'll be stuck with sale prices on almost everything to make up the gap. Cycling isn't the only industry where that happened -- it's similar for cars today.

Sales are the same they’ve been all year. Bikes online same sale they’ve had. Canyon same prices they’ve been trying to push. Specialized sales on stuff nobody wants. Trek the same way. All these sales aren’t sales. It’s unwanted by customers. They aren’t discounting the stuff people actually want. If you’ve had a bike on sale since 2022 at 25 percent off and it’s not sold it’s time to give a steeper discount to move the damn thing..

It feels like we’re in the awkward and uncomfortable phase of the reset. I’ve been car shopping recently, and it seems like the car industry is in a similar situation to the bike industry, just slightly behind. Vehicles are incredibly expensive now, and dealerships are sitting on a lot of inventory that people can’t afford. While there are some crazy deals available, even those are more expensive than car prices were five years ago.

Two things I've noticed here in Ukraine. 1. "Black weeks" instead of Black Friday. 2. Less crazy discount - you won't find a 50% discount. So it becomes 20-30% during two weeks in November. I miss that "one day crazy sale" which was a true shopping holiday and I saved some money for that one day.

@hobscotch61612 күн бұрын
Lets be honest, 5K is too much for a bike, and if companies are trying to justify the prices I am seeing then there is something very wrong with their production cost or they are just peeing up my leg and telling me it's raining. $300 for bib shorts, I go through 3-4 sets a year that is $1200 just on bibs if I was to go with a typical brand offering that is marketed at my riding level. My $200 shoes are now like $400, tires have 2x in price if not more and it the last 5 years my salary has barely moved. Thankfully I can do all my own servicing and bike builds. But as one side of the industry prices itself out out the market our lord and savior Trace velo is showing us the way...

Well GC, bike shops r becoming very niche. i am quite dependant on my "favourite" bike shop which mainly stocks shimano stuff & as for components & gear, its not the cheapest nor best. i like them bec they don't mind "installing" stuff that i've brot in from other stores or something i've mail ordered. i did buy, among other things, a bike from them a little over a year ago, but how often does 1 buy a bike? We live in exciting & challenging times. i'm in my late 50s now. disc brakes for bikes were only "invented" in mid 2010s(?) & now we even have hydraulic disc brakes. My family had a car in 1980s that already had disc brakes. We can look forward to a lot of new technology, but the market will be challenging & cut-throat
