I work in Trucking, what you described about "more RV's than spots to park them in" is exactly what the Truckers go through every single day. Several of my drivers run team so they never need to stop for more than enough time to shower and eat (not sleep) but for my solos who MUST stop for their 10 hour rest break it is a blood-sport jungle out there finding parking to do so. It's getting worse with Trucking booming. Great video as usual Robin, you are a gift to the RV world!

Glad rv enjoying your lives. My only pbm is a lot of you are avoiding rv spots. Now truck stop spots are being taken over. Which I wish would not be allowed. It's hard for us truckers finding parking as it is. After driving 11hrs we barely have energy and no time on our clocks to drive hrs 20-30 miles more to find spot or have to park on road because 5-6 rv and hot shotters are taking truck spots.

I used to travel in a camper for medical travel assignments. It has progressively been getting worse to get a spot since about 2014. With rents and mortgages going up, folks figured out camping was a better deal. Thus, supply and demand kicked in. I got out this year. Sold my rig. It's better doing Airbnb and hotels and Facebook marketplace apartments currently. Especially with fuel costs.

Yes it’s a very bad year for us. With our home burning down in April this year. Thankfully our insurance on the house allowed us to get an rv to live in. Now finding a place to hook up our new home is craaaazy! We live in Florida, nothing, had to travel to Alabama to an rv park for 3 wks. Talk about over booking a park, it was nuts you could hardly drive through the park, three cars in each spot. Shoving people into tiny spots, kids driving carts around, while you dodge them this is at 9pm. Then weekends more people for beer drinking parties. Also, letting their dogs walking around with no leash. So when we could we left and found a spot for a few days closer to our permanent spot. It’s a nightmare. Thx for your video.

We have been tent campers for 30+ years and the experience this summer has been very different. Tent sites are booked and it’s hard to find a spot. When we camped last week, most all of the sites were reserved and nobody was camping in the sites.... no shows. We think that there are a lot of inexperienced campers this year. The weather report called for rain so maybe it spooked new campers away. Very frustrating.
@ms.hotdoglegs6143 жыл бұрын
We have been booking campsites as a precaution. We like boondocking, but because so many are out doing the same we feel like at least we have a reservation as a back up. Even if the campsite is packed at least there are rules about generators and a "bedtime" hour. We just came back from boondocking and the neighbors partied until 2 with loud music, air horns, four-wheelers, wild kids running back-and-forth.

The prices were dumb barely no sales or incentives and HUGE waiting lists for one to be built for me because they had very few available for purchase or was waiting for finance to clear potential buyers. So I decided to put it off a couple of years for RVing to hopefully go back to "normal" once the hotels, cruise lines, and resorts go back to normal mode. Sigh :( a good thing was ruined. I like the solitude of traveling and camping. To be stuck in a crowded RV park....I might as well pay for a hotel.

When my husband and I went full-time we just invested a buttload of money to make sure that we were not reliant on RV park. To be honest most of it was because I didn't want to pay the money all the time I'd rather invest it in my vehicle and not have to.. that said I never foresaw any of this and what a wise choice we made! I already knew of the parks not having enough space for everyone but I had no idea about the overbooking thing going on. It's a shame that these folks deliberately make themselves a headache. Why? I tent camp and made reservations several weeks ago. My party pitched tents in the site we reserved but the next morning were told we had to move because we were on the wrong site. The only sites available were non-reservable primitive walk-ins. What?!!! So we dragged our gear up a hill from the sheltered site to another one where we were exposed to freezing arctic wind. I couldn’t access the reservation info at the time, so I decided not to argue and risk no sites being available on a busy holiday weekend if I waited to move (or was asked to leave). Later I was able to access the text confirmation and brought it to their attention. But I wasn’t about to move again, so we braved the freezing nights on the hilltop. Turns out their system messed up every single reservation. Nobody ever occupied the site we vacated or the one right next to it. This is the first year that campground had taken reservations. What a mess.

You had me worried!!! I made a reservation this past week for a campground in PA. I used the reservation site. So tonight I went in to look to see if they still had the site available for the same place and time. Yes the site said there were 6 sites available but luckily my site was no longer listed. Hoping that it's not cancelled when we get there. If it is then I'll be calling the local TV station and newspapers. I lived in the area of this campground for over 50 yrs so I know a lot of people!!!! Hope you have better luck in the future. I have Harvest Host membership and I can't wait to use it!

Have not had a similar experience this year in any RV park. I am on a 4-5 month trip out West with RV park reservations all the way. Much prerfer not booking so far in advance but required this year. I also have personally observed that many boondocking spaces are packed complete with trash and human waste. Also viewed many videos on You Tube showing and complaining about this very situation. So one tip that has worked for me so far. Arrive at RV parks by 3pm even if you have to get up early. First in first served. If you show up near office closing time you will more likely to suffer from over booking. 3pm arrival also allows for problems enroute. A second tip is never rely on RV park photos taken by the owner! Use Campendium, RV Parky etc., read the reviews and look at the photos posted by campers. I have yet to stay in an RV park as tight with narrow roads as you show in over 20 years of RVing. A little time spent researching and planning really does go along way.

With my husband’s work, he has had to stay In our camper as did my daughter and her husband and though they have always had good landlords, the neighbors sometimes have different values than we do. My parents have an RV park and I assure you that if you stayed in their park, you would definitely have some good content for a couple of videos. It’s a good place to stay!

This is why I never book through websites unless they are maintained by the owner, and even then I'm skeptical. When I actually pick up the phone I never have these issues. Another way to have an easier time getting a reservation is don't get more rig than you need. The shorter rigs have a much easier time getting a spot at the last minute.

Agree on RV park prices. We f/t time RVd for a yr and a half up til Dec 2019 and stopped to take a break and boy did we dodge a bullet. Covid hit and we eventually decided to stay put for a while.

Although I am a big proponent of boondocking, I am workamping at an RV park right now. I think one of the biggest problems getting a spot at any park is because of online reservations. Our park only handles reservations by phone - we look up availability based on dates and length of the RV while the customer is on the phone and take a deposit before they hang up. Their reservation is guaranteed. We have had no problems by doing it this way. But I will tell you that this year is, by far, much busier than any - we are almost sold out for NEXT WINTER! So sorry about the way you were treated by staff - you (and all campers) will find a welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff if you visit us in Tucson!

Great stuff guys! We had a recent situation that also reminded us why we primarily boondock. That 28% number is encouraging for us...les competition for the spots like you are in at the end! 😉✌️

OMG Robin!! I just love your videos! I am totally looking forward to your new series.. We live in Colorado and decided on Thursday night to go camping for the weekend. Nope we don’t own a RV yet or a tent. So we decided to sleep in our car for the weekend. Just 2 nights we could handle it, not a problem….Right….Well we decided to stay close to home. We went on my Public’s Land App to look up BLM land near us. Found an area just outside of Allenspark, which is not to far from Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Well I had to work late on Friday so we decided to wait until the next morning and head out. Well we never found the BLM land we were looking for so we just headed toward Estes and looked for a campground along the way. We found one and crossed our fingers there would be an open site. We totally got lucky and got 1 of the last 2 first come first serve sites. We had a great time but we definitely need a camper because we are both over tent camping. The car was great but my husband is too tall for the back area…LOL…. We would love to find the BML land we originally looked for and try it again. Thanks again & Safe Travels!

Robin, you are awesome. I also love how Doug is thinking and sounding like you. I am converting my short bus, which is another one of the modes of camping for 2021. In the 60s camping was our familys' thing and my dad often said, I wish I could find a bus to turn into a camper. 2 things about my dad, he was not a hippie and I do not believe duck tape would count for remodeling a bus to a camper. haha Fast forward, I did not learn my DIY skills from my dad, thank goodness, but I always knew he had a great idea, fast forward to age 65, I knew with us baby boomers there would be a lot of retirees in RVs traveling. But what we are seeing now is concerning, until I saw your boondocking spot. Thank you and I can't wait for your next series.

I love your channel, the honesty and info is greatly appreciated! I'm only an aspiring RVer at this point but if I ever make my dream a reality, it will be boondocking all the time for me. We really need to get our rig outfitted for boondocking...these last two summers full-timing have been a struggle finding nice parks to stay in. We've been booking months in advance just to make it work, but that's exhausting and takes away some of the flexibility we love with this life. Great vid!

I’m a travel nurse and stay in RV Parks. I got my rig 3 years ago. I live in Texas and have worked in areas of California since I got my rig. I Pre book for the length of my contract which is 13 weeks. Then when I travel I get sites for 1 or 2 overnights on the same day. zero issues on getting a site. Sometimes they are a little pricey, though. In Texas, I like to use their state park system. When you book, you can pick what spot you will be staying in. I did get one sketchy boondocking site on the app HipCamp. It was the first and only time I used it. I prefer to have an electric hookup when it is so hot.

Goooo Robin! You are spot on. I boondock 50% of the time and then stay in parks listed on recreation.gov. I move from boondocking on public land to dry camping in government-run parks. Since you mentioned your new series, I would like info on boondocking/free camping in Florida and the East Coast. Boondocking is plentiful in the Western US, but I'm seeing very little in the Eastern States. Thanks!

I heard this comment recently from an RVer I respect: “You have to be handy and resourceful to run an RV well. People who buy them, and then think the thing will just take care of itself, are in for a big letdown.” I believe the current craze will end when 1) people begin to neglect their rigs by deferring regular maintenance and by not making timely repairs until the rigs simply don’t run well. (Frustrated, they will unload them onto a suddenly bloated used RV market.) and 2) when it feels “safe” to start staying in hotels again, these starry-eyed, fair-weather RVers will ditch their rigs for conventional vacationing. Path of least resistance for the cabin-fever crazed…

Ok great video. I’ve been in Southern CO. (Cos -Pueblo) Came with no plan, no reservations and lucked out at an expensive rv resort on Hwy 50. Hunted down some raw some land, bought it and have been boon docking ever since. Love it. !!!! I looked quickly through some of comments and didn’t see any mentions of hipcamp where I have my tent and cabin spots. DYRT / campendium / FreeRoam are other boon docking site/ apps. Give em hell and wreck the rude with kindness.

We camped at a State Park in the Eastern US a few weeks ago. It is a large park with @ 1000 total sites in 3 large separate campgrounds. Some sites are tent only on the lake, without power, and with water spigots nearby. This park has a dump station in each of the 3 campgrounds. I talked to the ranger and he said all the reservable sites were booked all the time, but there were plenty of walk-in sites. From our site we could not even see another camper. For camping, and even for hotels, we are starting to just call and talk to a person to make our reservations. Oh, and be sure to get the name of the person you talk to! Happy traveling, Everyone!

As more and more people boondock, those spots will fill up too. Will be interesting to see your series on boondocking and how crowded it gets this summer in those spots. Please don't reveal your sites as this will alert others to camp there too and increase the crowd size.
