I can't help but wonder how we get access to recordings like this, if no one is allowed in or out of North Korea. Did a defector take some copies with them? Is it an external recreation based on what's heard on North Korean State TV? Is it through trade with China? Do the North Koreans upload it online and let us listen as a means of spreading propaganda? Hmm...
@laiska3962 жыл бұрын
North Korean music records are not as rare as you might think. There's a surprisingly high number of vinyl records, CDs and cassettes out there. Now how did they get outside of North Korea? I am not sure, but I'm pretty sure that tourists have been able to buy them from gift shops or hotels in Pyongyang. Many of the albums (for example the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble ones) also have English track listings on them so it seems like they were designed with the foreign audience in mind. Some pro-North Korea organisations have also published albums containing North Korean music in different countries. It's of course become much easier to find this music since the Internet became mainstream. The North Korean "Uriminzokkiri" website has hosted many songs since 2005 and they are still uploading new ones. Other North Korean sites have music for download too and so do many Japanese (possibly Chongryon connected?) websites. It's also really interesting how some songs (like "Defend The Headquarters of Revolution") which aren't played that much in North Korea itself have become very popular on the Internet. I think it's because that particular song was featured on a VHS compilation of North Korean music that was made in the 90s and the first uploads of North Korean music on KZbin came from that VHS.
@Str3tchyL3gs9 ай бұрын
People are allowed to visit North Korea for tourism I know someone who did. They encourage tourists to purchase North Korean books, CD's, ect. Not sure how it works for North Koreans travelling elsewhere but there might be some form of limited travel for citizens to travel outside, most likely mainly with China North Korea also has propaganda and state media sites online which would upload songs, live TV broadcasts and news articles although they often have issues with servers crashing North Korea isn't as isolated this day and age compared to how they might've been in the past. They need tourism and foreign trade to grow their economy but it's hard to do because they're by far the most sanctioned country in the world
