I worked as a diesel mechanic up until a few years ago. The dpf and def systems were our #1 problem. Given time, they become problematic. That's just my experience with a fleet of 120 tractors.

DOC only engines are on most of the imported brands. The more domestic companies (Kubota & Deere) are using DPF's. A large part of this is probably because at Tier 5 DOC-only likely won't be complaint requiring companies to do a lot of model updates.

Love your videos Neil! But I gotta say the emissions crap on my M7060 is a pain in the ass! You can down play it and I understand why. Main problems I have experienced... Any time a regen is needed when not working in a high RPM manor (mowing or bailing) it's a big inconvenience. Most time I have to stop what I'm doing and leave the tractor parked running at wide open RPMs for 20 minutes or so and have to keep coming back to check to see if it's finished. This is a waist of time, fuel and engine hours. Also I've experienced roughly a 25% loss of fuel economy with this tractor over my previous (non-DPF) M7040. The lead tech at my Kubota dealer said the DPF system chokes these motors so much that without it I'd have about 30 more HP. Then there's the added components an complexity the system adds. All to keep a little soot out of the air. The on-road trucking industry is really having trouble with these systems. It's been real nightmare for them. These types of regulations are costing us in untold ways.

Don't feel bad our M8560 in the winter wants to Regen almost every time I go to use it. We use it for some loader work in the winter, in the summer I never notice it because it gets worked hard enough for the auto Regen to do it's thing. So annoying.

another great video Neil; couple things to include: one thing is to try to always run your tractor at the 2000 rpm and above range (near where the tachometer needle will line up with the 540 rpm pto indicator), the engine is made for it, and it's not going to hurt anything; in fact running it to low will probably do more to wear things out; hydraulics and everything else on these tractors is set up for running at the higher rpm's; running it at the correct rpm will also make re-gens less frequent as the DPF is in its heat range to keep itself clean. one thing you should include is a warning to move your tractor out of the tall grass before starting a re-gen. the exhaust temp does go way up if the DPF is really dirty and with the lower mounted exhaust there is a possibility of starting a fire. i will see if i can get a exhaust outlet temp reading next time my MX4800 is in re-gen. for those that don't know: there is also two buttons on the dash: one to start a re-gen, and one to postpone a re-gen. it is advised to let a re-gen run whenever possible. my local Kubota dealer says the biggest problem is inexperienced operators that keep hitting the cancel button, and as Neil explained eventually the computer won't let you do anything.

Hi Neal, good video, it should answer a lot of questions that people have. I have a L47 TLB which has the DPF percentage screen that I always have on display. It's nice to know when a regen is nearing. I usually run about 2000 rpm's, and burn about every 30 hours. At lower rpm the percentage increases quickly. I've also noticed if I run it at higher rpm and work it hard enough the percentage will actually decrease. Enjoy the videos, keep up the good work.

New to the DPF world... Brand new L4802.. I thought low RPM would save engine wear and tear... been moving some logs around, pretty much under 1000 RPM... DPF came on at 16 hours... So, what is a good operating RPM when not using the PTO? I don't want to be to low due to DPF and not to high to run it in the ground... Please advise!

Neil, during a regen diesel fuel is injected into the engine on the exhaust stroke, in addition to the usual intake stroke. Fuel injected on the exhaust stroke does nothing to keep the engine spinning but rather flows right down the exhaust into the DPF tube. It is a convenience method of injecting fuel for a regeneration vs using an additional injector in the exhaust system. So during a regen, yes...extra fuel is used! And during that time, fuel consumption is significantly higher! Running at high RPM helps increase heat, but the diesel fuel is needed to significantly increase heat in the DPF...otherwise, regeneration would occur naturally at high RPM. FYI...Kubotas with a DPF also have a DOC and EGR as well! The DOC is what converts the unburned diesel fuel into heat for the DPF. EGR is used actually to cool the exhaust stream to reduce NOX to an emissions-acceptable level. Higher horsepower machines require DEF injection for this purpose as well. Lots of EGR is not good for an engine because EGR gas is “dead” gas that can over time coke up the intake valves and EGR system itself. It’s also worth noting that a regeneration system using exhaust-stroke injection can and likely will cause engine oil to be diluted with diesel fuel because of natural blow-by. The amount is small and this is a normal condition but it underscores the importance of regular oil changes. Finally, the reduced diesel “smell” is more the result of tightly controlled direct injection than a DPF. Older tractors had mechanical, indirect injection which were totally reliable but at times injected too much fuel (under peak load or at startup) which caused black smoke to emit). The DPF will certainly be a health benefit to an operator, however...because carcinogenic PM that you might breathe is now captured. My experience with current day DPF and other exhaust aftertreatment systems is that they are generally problem free but certainly add to the cost of a machine.

For anyone hesitant to purchase a smog controlled ECU equipped Tier4 tractor, I can say after about 5 years of running 6 Kubota L4060 tractors similar to this one, we have had no problems with the smog control devices. This is in a Rental fleet, so no shortage of abuse or neglect there. The regen procedure is quite simple and with the PM percentage gauge on the dash it is easy to tell when a burn off is imminent. There is the potential for customers ignoring the warnings enough that the dealer has to force a regen, but that has only happened once and with no ill effects. Overall, these newer electronic engines are smoother, quieter and have been tougher than our old L3530 and L3940 machines.... which while good simple tractors, were also prone to being harder to start cold as they aged, and could be blown up by a very abusive/neglectful customer who ignored the temps while say, mowing a dry field. ECU control and emergency shutdown has meant none of our machines have been popped yet, after an average of 1500hrs. That aspect alone makes the added complexity of the EGR/DPF well worth it, just to gain modern electronic monitoring and diagnostic abilities.

Now with that said Messick Farm Equipment's service sounds like it something that might swing me towards a Kubota if I was depending on them for service, Our Kubota dealer isn't near as customer service orientated. This seems to be a popular misconception. 30 million is a pittance in engine design, any time you hear of engine design costs your usually talking multiple hundreds of millions. What Mahindra 'designed' was a DOC-only engine system, which is not really their technology. Virtually every engine manufacturer offers a DOC-only engine, many tractors companies use them. They don't have anything special. I think I talked a bit about Doc-Only in this video. All that said, Mahindra does not build 2/3 of their tractors and simply buys them from TYM or Mitsubishi. They talk about this investment as if it applies to all models, but reality is it would only be on the handful of models they build themselves.

I'm fully aware that Cummins developed the DOC technology. (Been in the trucking industry for 40 years and I'm the Business editor for a national trucking Magazine.) In my research from the Trucking side, DEF Filter engines are a royal pain. So when I researched purchasing a new compact tractor the regen of the DEF system was a major concern. As you pointed out when the engine is doing a regen it must be run at a high rpm. If I'm tilling or operating other 540 PTO rpm equipment like spraying or mowing I don't have the option of allowing a higher rpm than the one that maintains my pto at 540 rpms so continuing to work would not be an option as tractor land speed and pto rpm are extremely important. Frankly, DEF technology was developed in a rush by the diesel engine mgfs to fulfill emission requirements with the lowest development cost, and on the trucking side DEF system failure the most frequent event that puts semis on the side of the road. Since my farming is tightly scheduled between my other occupations and responsibilities, and my knowledge of the problems of DEF systems within the trucking industry, I would have purchased a pre-DEF used the tractor if this DOC technology wasn't available. And while Mahindra didn't invent DOC, they have designed a new engine to use this technology very effectively. With that said everything has it gives and takes. and as I use the Mahindra I will come to know the downsides and the upsides of this purchase. The main thing that I advise any truck owner when purchasing a truck is the most important part of your purchase is the quality of the dealer who will handle warranty, maintenance, and repairs, so chose where one buys wisely. That is the other reason I Chose the Mahindra, as the local Kubota and John Deere dealers lack that commitment to customer service I require. I'm pretty sure from what I have seen in your videos and online reviews, If I lived near Messick Farm Equipment, I would be seriously looking at you as a place to purchase, maintain and repair my farm equipment. I find this funny. I was working with a friend of mine who has a new Kubota he had to stop every 20 minutes or so while I ran my old Ford kept going all day. we were both running at almost full throttle heavy loads he's taken her back to fix it at least 3 times. I think I will keep my old Ford. It's not up to date and could use a rebuild, but she still runs. And I can rebuild her myself. I just need the time.

I think that my money would be better spent on a total rebuild at 3000 hours than on a replacement. hmmmm , so there is a carbon cost to build this regen system, mine the metals-shape them-make filters-build into tractor-fuel spent in burn off etc. and you will need to buy a new one which leads to carbon cost of you driving to dealer and it being delivered to you. Meanwhile the fire dept. in Youngstown Pa. does not extinguish abandoned home fires which each generate more carbon than all of you and your friends tractors will generate in your lifetime!!!!! My diesel truck always seem to start a regen when pulling up in my drive way. Most of the time I did not get a regen message I would see the mileage drop from 16 to 8 MPG. It would be nice to read the DPF pressure and start a regen at a more convenient time

I did construction and for our heat in the winter and heat our tar we ran our trucks and the trucks had the dpf and the i would get sick but our one trk had been deleted and i could be standing right next to ot just like my old gm 6.5 or now my 7.3 ps and not be bothered by it

My L6060 is at 91% full (22.4 hrs on the tractor) and has not asked for a regen, my dealer said to let it go to 100% and see what happens. That sounds pretty risky to me ???

Fire trucks and ambulances have different "shut down rules" than typical on road diesels, and they should. The regen software is similar. Years ago the soot went into the atmosphere and noone made money on the exhaust. Today the exhaust is filtered, collected and then washed into our water system, an entire industry makes money and the epa collects more money if u don't comply. The same pollution is there just more expensive.

What is an appropriate rpm to run an L3901? I have 67 hours and have had 3 regens(16, 32 & 59 hrs). The third regen was done during snowblowing season where pto rpm was used all the time. I don't want to run 2300 for normal use,though.

Mahindra's marketing is maybe one notch above politics. That's a DOC-only engine, also used by a half-dozen other companies. Same thing as a DPF but rather than running a cycle every 20-40 hours its always running hot and burning continuously. There are pro's and con's to any of these engine systems. The con's on this system is more use of EGR (exhaust recirculation), overall higher engine temp's, and warm up \ cool down periods before and after you operate. I've heard other Mahindra dealers refer to this as a "no emissions" engine, that's simply not truthful .

One comment you need to say on DPF is use of engine oil. My Kubota Dealer drove 60min out to do a on farm first service with wrong type of oil(kubota CH-4 Oil). He did not know my tractor had a DPF until i point it out. If I did not pointed out and call back to based. I would have had Kubota CH-4 oil in the Engine. What would happen i did not put in correct oil to engine? Lucky he had some Isuzu DPD Approved oil. but not still not CJ-4 oil. But they say they use that oil in DPF equip Kubota..

Likely nothing bad. Owning a diesel car shop I've seen many clients running well over 100K on CJ4 oils with not DPF issues. Modern oils are really low in the "bad" stuff that kills the DPF. The CJ4 is even lower still.

Once our fuel supplier switched to winter diesel it would fail about 15 minutes in, then once it cooled it would complete a regen and be fine until the next regen. Now that I’m back on summer fuel, it is doing fine again. That said, my dealer informed me that it could be due to a possible timing issue of the fuel pump, and they are working with Kubota to solve the problem. I would still buy the tractor knowing what I know now, and I am confident my issues will be solved soon.

I have a M6060. My owners manual says that when the Regen symbol comes on you should place it in Park and the computer will automatically raise the engine speed. This never happens. I have to raise the throttle myself and eventually the light will go out.

That's a parked regen, you generally won't do that. Rev it and keep working.

No I don't think. We pay several thousand a year for the licenses and adapters. It's really expensive stuff. Other than making neat charts, I've never seen anything in there of value to an individual owner. I do follow right to repair and consider myself a supporter of it.

@@MessicksEquip The main reason for soot is Ethier to much fuel or the engine is not up to working temperature / Excess idling to keep the soot burn off If it was me I would have an ECM setup that would read the EGT when idling and throttle the engine up to working temperature to burn the soot off and throttle back down according to the EGT the electric cooling fans work similarly to that but I'm not and electrical or a software engineer I was taught never let a diesel set idling for extended periods and to let the engine idle 5 minutes if its turbo charged after being worked hard to prevent wet stacking and coking in the turbocharger oil lines!

the manufacturer spends millions of dollars developing the system, sensors, hardware to get all this epa mandated crap to run. they are liable if it works incorrectly ( ask Volkswagen) so if you have not attended factory training and have factory authorization- serious doubts they will sell you any software. it's a catch 22 situation if there ever was. I don't see apple selling software to fix their devices and they don't have the epa leaning over their shoulder. not saying some tiny company cant develop their own to sell- that's another story.

Apple doesn't want anyone working on their electronics, but go get a proper computer. You can download the service manuals for all thinkpads for free, which shows ever screw, part number, option, and all the correct specs. They learned to be successful with giving consumers the information to repair everything, so why can't other companies?

300-500 dollars to get the DPF cleaned out...NOT. Dad took his Kubota to the dealership in West Memphis(not mentioning names) to get the DPF cleaned out....$2000 bill. That’s all that was done. To say he was PO’d would be an understatement.

Not sure on kubota but otr trucks you can wash out your own dpf, need new gaskets etc but you still need the oem software to reset the cleaned parameter or the code still cannot be cleared. Ahh, isn't the epa great. Said no same man evah!

Jason Daniels I can see the benefit of emissions equipment on professional/contractor equipment. They run multiple pieces of machinery for for thousands of hours per year and that much pollution can add up. These professionals can absorb the added cost as overhead for the maintenance and downtime emissions equipment inevitably causes. Landowners and hobby farmers don't need the headaches, complexities or costs and have far less environmental impact.

if you are out working the tractor hard- when requirements are met- it will (should) do it automatically. if you know it is in the middle of a regen and you have finished your work- allow the regen to complete before shutting down or the regen will not give credit and you will not return to zone zero which means you still need the regen.

Hey Neil, I have a M135GX. I done many regen so far on the tractors. Is there an option with out a computer to start a regen early? Ie at 90%. My first regen request was like 1min before shutdown for the night at 11pm, I had to inhibit it and do a regen next time(a month later) i started up. But if in knew i have hour before shutdown i can do a early regen and get the filter clean out. Also can you do a video on Diesel performance chips. Or how to save fuel. My M135GX drinks a tanker load more of diesel vs the M125X it replaced under the same condition. I feel like my local fuel station is becoming my best friend and my plastic is getting paper thin.

No, that's not correct. Under 25hp a dpf is not needed to meet the requirements. The engine is still tier 4, but the standard is not a strict.
