With bubble algae and aiptasia showing up again in both tanks (never ending battle?), I have once again went back to square one in looking for a biological control. After hearing from multiple reefers that reefcleaners.org offers a "money back guarantee" that their Emerald Crabs would eat bubble algae, I have decided to place an order. Since they offer Peppermint Shrimps as well, I ordered a few as well. Along for the ride are some Money Cowries, Limpets, Nassarius Snails, Cerith Snails and different types of Macro Aglae. All were peachy until the following morning...

RIP your euphyilia. I’ve had bubble algae for years and yes it is unsightly, but as the reef matures it relents and is displaced. Finally, I commend you on transparency. Love it! Yeah I got a small peppermint shrimp and he is super outgoing and bold, he never bothers corals (other than food stealing) but he investigates every single coral I add which I love since if I miss some Aiptasia he’ll definitely take care of it. He even cleans my hand! I definitely agree. I believe there’s different peppermint shrimps

Hey dont know if you read these, but a great way to get the peppermint shrimp to eat aptasia or majano is to crush a couple, or if you have a majano wand boil a couple before lights out. It triggers their feeding response

Why not add just a few nudibranchs to the tank, more to just control the numbers of aptasia, not enough to eat all the aptasia, but would still eliminate a bit? (Never kept so I'm not sure what they get along with)

Wow. I was going to say, are you sure the emerald crabs are eating live corals and then I saw it sitting on top of the frogspawn literally snacking on it. If the coral was browned out and receding with brown jelly or something then they definitely do eat the dead flesh which is useful, but hard to tell sometimes.

Ended up giving it away to a guy with a bigger tank
@Goofygooberston

Late response but pretty much all crabs (spare for pompom crabs and others that are filter feeders) are opportunistic predators, meaning that while they (usually) won't actively hunt fish, if a fish is wounded/sick/overly passive a crab might see it as a chance at a quick snack. Crabs, while cool, **in my opinion** usually aren't a good idea in any aquarium that isn't already very very very established with plenty of other food sources. If a crab is hungry, a crab will eat. And it won't care if it's chomping down some algae, your favorite fish or pricey coral. All is fair to the crab.

So apparently only Atlantic species of Peppermint Shrimp are considered reef safe.. Those are the ones who's light coloring isn't as bright or vibrant. Caribbean and Indo varieties are not. They have very white markings in comparison to other species. And as far as I know that's the only way to really tell them apart. And ime no species of Emeralds are guaranteed reef safe. I see I few things that could be causing this. 1. Your tank is open at the top just think of all the dust and dead skin... 2. What type of air sanitation do you use? I’d invest in a ozone maker. 3. I think once you get past this ugly phase you’ll be good. Seriously consider closing the tank

The Berghia, I have to point out did work so good. I had so many more then you, Aiptasia that is. and everything I used just made it so bad everything I used red sea f Aiptasia made it spread. I killed one 10 pop up. Then I seen your video, bought 5 and waited weeks. then I notice less and less. now I’m adding Aiptasia every week and the next day the rock is clean just to keep them with food because my wife don’t want them to die. I have never seen them in my tank. I have a 90 gal. And when I added them I didn’t suck them up and place them I put the cup that they came in inside my tank it took them 3 days to leave the cup. I think you should try these little guys again maybe the ones you got didn’t make it. Or a fish or card ate them. I hope you can rid your tank of them.
