@damianmorris275328 күн бұрын
@davidmorris9661 my point is no one seemed angry that they had to pay it when it made the news. Why is that okay and understandable, but you can't understand the idea that Britain (and other European countries) not you or me but Britain owes countries that they exploited and used their people for free Labour for hundreds of years, carved up Africa, dehumanised and enslaved them. Why do you believe that Britain owes them nothing when they got rich of it and are still benefiting from that richness today? So Britain doesn't want to pay reparations, they don't want to take down statues of Slave Owners that are still up to this day, they don't want to give back all the items they stole and when anyone brings in up they are like how dare you talk about it and get over it. The sheer arrogance of Britain and some of its people are off the charts.
@tomjohnson983328 күн бұрын
@damianmorris2753 you have a narrative where all the world was super-peaceful and morally just, with no conflict or oppression, no exploitation and no borders. Then the British came along, invented slavery, invented colonialism and oppression, and carved up the world into arbitrary states with borders. Needless to say this is an incredibly stupid narrative. Why you're singling the UK out specifically is anyone's guess, but you might stop to consider that the benefits the UK has brought to the world at least balance the costs, if not outweigh them significantly. The world has always been a brutal, unjust and unstable place. The fact you can hold the luxury beliefs you do is due in large part to social, technological, political and moral advancements that often began in the UK.

Slavery to the black population was absolutely terrible, which was done mainly by the white population and the tribal chiefs selling their braves in mass to the white slave traders. BUT, what about the white slave trade, so do I get reparations for my family’s slavery and suffering? Slavery comes in many forms, i.e. forced to work hard labour all your life, in terrible conditions, with mass starvation and early death the only way out for millions. This happened throughout the world, especially during and before the queen victoria era in Britain. As an example, children worked in the coal mines from 8yrs old, but many would be young as five. These men and children, worked between 12 to 16 hours a day, with many having very short lives due to the coal dust and machine accidents, this was the same for the cotton mills and other industries. My own relatives, died in work houses, or simply starved to death if they couldn’t find work and some were even press-ganged off the streets, to be forced to sail ships, often dying of scurvy and malnutrition. Many were also forced to fight as soldiers in wars for the establishment, all over the world, or be shot for cowardice. So isn’t all this also slavery, slavery to a system, wherever it is done in the world!

Saying that no one's alive who's responsible is stating the obvious. Present governments apologising for the actions of previous governments is not a new thing, and the Dutch government apologised for the role the Netherlands role in slavery. The real reason the UK government is refusing to follow their example is because they know that saying sorry for slavery will make them legally vulnerable to being sued by slave descendants for reparations.
