Byron Katie expands on the statement “No one can hurt me; that’s my job” for an audience member at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center. The man, the son of a Holocaust survivor, questions how this viewpoint could apply to victims of violent crime, war, and hate. “There are a lot of people being hurt by a lot of other people today,” he says, “and this statement sounds a little privileged.”
“That's why I'm standing here," Katie says. "You don’t have to suffer that kind of hurt. You can get clear. And if you can get clear, someone else doesn’t have to suffer that.” Katie walks through a hypothetical scenario that illustrates how the mind creates its own suffering by imagining an event in a future that doesn't exist.
Katie points him to his immovable true nature. “You don’t have to notice it; it’s always there. It’s yours, it’s perfect, it's immovable. And it hurts when you argue against it."
When I'm walking to the gas chamber, other than what I'm thinking and believing, what an amazing day! -Byron Katie

I love this video and find it so inspiring. When I first saw it, my mind rebelled against the idea that the "problem" lies with the person on the other end of the gun, not with the shooter. I thought it was victim-blaming. However, the more I pondered this, the more I came to understand Byron Katie's point: that the problem of SUFFERING is in the mind of the victim. The moral and legal problems are of course with the shooter (i.e, it's morally wrong and illegal to kill another human being). Katie is simply trying to show that no one has the power to make us suffer unless we give it to them, which is actually the opposite of victim-blaming.

I am so overwhelmed by the patience Byron Katie demonstrates. Her commitment to communicating something that can be nearly impossible to communicate with words as best she can impresses me. I honestly don’t know how she is able to reach so many people. Its attempts at communication in so many ways to reach people, it keeps reaching and reaching.

I love also the language she uses. It's so down to earth. She has such a different voice than others who attempt to explain these realizations. She's a treasure that way, and in so many other ways. And I've loved hearing the evolution of her efforts to explain what she came to understand so deeply, because it has evolved over the years.

It's such an incredible place to be when you are connected. We seem to have beliefs that worry and fear will prevent the worst from happening, but it's actually the opposite

Her words are inspirational. Just because others don't care for me, doesn't mean I can't care for them. My feelings are mine. I can feel what I want without the words or actions of others. I am not alone even if I am not in the thoughts of other people. What a wonderful realization that I need not be lonely just because I do not have human companionship.

"Just because others don't care for me, doesn't mean I can't care for them." Yeah, it's like that dialogue in Patch Adams (movie) that I love... - If you don't like me, just say it. - I don't like you! - Why don't you like me? You're a prick, and I like you.

Just want to express by thanks for Byron Katie. I've been using the Work now for I don't know... 10 years? It's so useful. It's so practical. It evolves with me. I would guess I've done it hundreds of times. Now, I'm off to do it on two statements this afternoon. Have a good day.

Thank you Katie! When I am explaining the Work, I struggle and sputter with these kinds of questions. I have been called “privileged” trying to explain how inquiry helps in these situations. They could be right and I always feel like there is a “gotcha” because I can’t articulate clearly how the Work serves in those “life threatening” and “evil” situations. I am clearer and more loving every time I do the Work. Thank you Dear Katie❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💕

@1:13. Agree with this gentleman. Too much denial going on here. Pretending things are not what they are is just dangerous.
@GM1988
@GM1988 5 жыл бұрын
that is the biggest problem with this work- that it leads to denial, not liberation. when ppl were put into gas chambers it wasn't a good day, but when you sit at home with the air conditioner, your coffee and the cookies, it is very easy to say "it's a wonderful day" on subjects like gas chambers, murder and rape, of course. the real deal is when it hits you personally - then it's a bit challenging to deny.

and what benefit does it get you to just keep thinking of the suffering of others ? start from your suffering and leave the rest, when u get clear you will know what to do as you are acting from wisdom and not fear... an action from wisdom is life changing but an action from fear/anger is life threatening.

No denial, just a distinction between suffering, which is mental, and physical harm. She's trying to teach the end of suffering. That doesn't mean that people will stop harming each other. She's not advocating "pretending" anything. Just don't believe every thought/story that your mind manufactures. Or, if you don't want to stop suffering just yet, keep doing what you're doing. Your choice.

"No One Can Hurt Me, That’s My Job" I assume doesn't negate the fact that it's possible to get damaged by the actions of others; either physically, emotionally, psychologically etc.

Because you don't understand it. Just consider that possibility. Jumping to something like 'omg she's an idiot' is so easy. You can always decide on that after truly exploring what she's saying.

TOTALLY DISAGREE! What happens if the person facing the gun is an Infant or child? In the next second ...they are maimed or killed! They haven't "imagined" a dialogue to take them out of "the moment". Byron's explanation is flawed!
@lynette6vii
@lynette6vii 5 жыл бұрын
QueensLadyDay You’re right! If it’s a child/infant they can’t “imagine” such a dialogue to take them out of “the moment” because they’re not capable to do so. They remain innocent and happy at that “moment” which is what she’s trying to explain. We have something to learn from children.
