Simple put nobody wants or needs VR ! even those companies Apple jumped on the bandwagon with, cant sell decent numbers at an 8th of the price. VR wont be widely adopted untill its the size of a regular pair of glasses that you see through both ways, with at least an 8 hour battery life, and that technology is decades away ! Apple wasted a shed load of cash developing this and judging by their nervous and hastily put together presentation I think they know it !

I'm foaming at the mouth for it, as a developer. Everyone else doesn't think its current utility validates the price point, and they're absolutely right. I think Apple knows this and didn't want to market the hell out of it for that reason. 2nd gen will be a different story I think.

Jon, it's because they literally *can't* "show" us, without personally trying it. That's the inherent problem with marketing any VR/AR headset. It's also why it's hard for people like us to accurately convey our thoughts about it, because no amount of words will do the experience, whether good, bad or lukewarm, justice. Im a video professional. I pre-ordered one, my main reason is to watch movies in a virtual home theater. I love watching movies in a cinema, big screen and sound, but I HATE most of the movie theater experience. From the duration being longer and longer that it’s almost impossible to watch a movie without a bathroom break, and thus missing parts of a movie, to dealing with rude and disrespectful people around you, finding a showing that matches when you can see the movie, dealing with parking, theaters that charge more and are maintained less, and, almost forgot, the shitty quality of today’s movies. Besides, it’s not like I can watch For All Mankind in a movie theater. If this thing is successful the movie theaters are in big trouble.

Obviously there's a lot of excitement about upgrades to products that people already know and love. But this isn't an iPhone. Nobody NEEDS a Vision Pro. Like the early macintosh computers, it's something that virtually everyone on earth can currently live without. That doesn't mean it's doomed for failure. Like all new things, it will require peer review and word of mouth. Apple doesn't need for this to be an overnight sensation. They just need enough users to talk about how cool and beneficial it is. People like me want to hear what average users think. What they like and dislike. We're not gonna obsess and geek out until we're sure it's worth our while. That's not bad news for apple. It's just what humans do when a new product category is unveiled.

One thing about Apple is that it keeps trying to sell "professional level" products to as many regular people as possible - MacBook Pro, Apple Watch Ultra, and now this. In my opinion, none of these products are for average consumers. But I don't think it's a problem of the products. This is more of a marketing issue.

100%. I don’t think Apple is out of touch though, because what they do works and works so well (they are frequently valued as the number 1 company in the world, which is insane if you think about it). They probably wonder why I (or people like me) won’t upgrade to an M1+ mackbook pro though; it’s because I paid about $3000 in cash for the intel 16 incher. With cash, you feel the sting (vs financing/credit), so yeah not upgrading for a long time lol.

I think you're right, though I don't think it's an experiment as much as it is a well-thought out strategy. Apple Watch is the closest thing I can think of to compare it to. It wasn't an immediate hit because no one was used to buying a watch at that price and it was untested and people thought, I already have a phone why do I need a smaller phone on my wrist as well? But now almost everyone has a smart watch if they have a watch at all. Added to that, a video just DOESN'T sell the full experience of VR. We're so used to looking through a screen for everything and the videos try to show that it's more than that, but you just can't get it until you try it on. Get people in the Apple Store to actually experience this and people will buy it... and those that don't will want one but wait for the SE model.

It's not ready for prime time yet. It's a highly technologically advanced device, but it's not a good product yet. Plus, it's very complicated to manufacture. I don't think Apple intends for the first-gen Vision Pro to dominate the market. But they need to get it into the hands of developers and enthusiasts to advance the ecosystem, discover use-cases, and learn how to improve it as consumer product. The second-gen and non-Pro versions will be true consumer-facing products that will dominate. And by that time, the surrounding ecosystem will be up to speed as well. Apple is giving this first-gen version exactly as much attention as it deserves and requires in the present day. This is a bet on tomorrow.

I know I'm excited to get it because this is my first experience of receiving a significant first generation product Apple has made. Because at the time the 1st Apple Watch came out I was like in middle school lol. I feel like Apple knows what they are doing we kinda have to "trust the process" or "take a leap of faith" we seen the same odd reactions when it came to AirPods coming out. We seen the odd reactions to when they got rid of the Touch ID on iPhone. I mean we still have a somewhat dysfunctional iPad line-up lol. I feel like this product is for those who simply want it just to want it. Sure there is regular people show in the adds and keynote. But at the end of the day its us the consumer that decides how apple vision pro will turn out to be.

I didn't buy the first generation iPhone, but I played with my friends' :) If the Vision Pro is as game-changing as the iPhone was, however, sure it would be worth the high price tag. But I suspect they need to drop that price in half and ideally not have a battery brick strapped to it. I will happily try it out at the Apple Store, but at $4000+ with all of the trimmings (and tax), it needs to be really, really compelling. I guess in February we'll have a good sense of how it plays out in real life.

Seeing the early reactions to Vision Pro I sense a real danger of people rejecting the value proposition of the device, because many are not used to vr, don’t quite understand how this is a big leap and focusing more on voicing discomfort and isolation, which the internet is already blowing out of proportion. what if Apple decides it’s not worth it (because they deal with a double standard of expected quality and are scrutinized over everything) and simply scrap this after some five years of software support and move on? It could be a real danger to vr if this is just widely rejected when it’s clearly the best that vr can offer overall right now, I’m worried… hopefully they try at least one or two more versions before giving up.

Why do people do not understand yet that Apple manipulate their outcome. They have enough data to do so. They have limited capability to sell this specific products and they know that VR/AR is still a niche product. They want people to know it exists but they don't want everyone to buy it (yet), mostly because they need a lot of developers to make well designed apps to bring it the real value and most developers are still learning about this futuristic technology. Releasing this on the day in the hour where actually all big tech reviewers posting their experiences and hands ons . Bummer. Check engagement. Guess people will and do care about it. Love your videos Jon. I hope the Vision Pro is gonna do well and future iterations will bring the price down once it’s available in enough markets.

The price is tooooo high and I don’t believe the average consumer cares this much. It’s only the people that can actually afford this product that is interested. 😅

If it’s so customised to the one user does that mean that no one else can then use it?

It's only for US now and it's price is not really accessible.

I think they are managing expectations because they are limited by manufacturing. Sure, the price point is probably also a factor. But surely something this technologically advanced is very difficult to manufacture ... they don't want to risk advertising too much and have to deal with potential disappointment from not being able to fulfill orders, so they are just going under the radar, knowing the people following it, and that can afford it, will buy it. And they are ok with that.

Yea it’s as though they’re mostly selling a vision for the future and entrenching themselves as the leaders in that space before it actually gets here. It’s smart.

I’m preordering. I’m just a fan that loves the tech. Worst case scenario there’s a good return policy. Totally worth getting my hands on trying the future. I hope it’s useable enough to keep.

There is absolutely no reason for me to buy this but I can’t wait to find out what engine it will support for games so I can start developing them!!

The biggest question is whether this can be used for working as a designer in hotels. Will it allow me to have Figma and Adobe products on a usable screen OR will they all be too far away to see the details? If it allows me to recreate a series of large screens for working then all I need is my laptop and this and that's perfect. But the demos so far seem to only show default MacOS apps. Need to see if Adobe / Figma works in it and then Office / Teams / Excel. Do you think I can do Teams calls? Positively answer these and I'm in, and it becomes a productivity tool that justifies some of the cost.
