People like the character of Brad in this story infuriate me: they are the worst of society, the make life less enjoyable for everyone with whom they interact, and yet, if I set them on fire, *I'm* the bad guy. Stupid anti-flamethrower laws...

This is why you feed them to plant monsters... or wood chippers. Either way, less evidence.

ShatteredPsyche except brad had a reason to be pissed....the main character was betting his life and the lives of everyone else on some random article he read....and in the end everyone died because the main character thought this would be a neat way to earn some cash....if you don't know how the hell you are gonna get out of some mysterious place that nobody's ever gone to and nobody knows a thing about....why even go in the first place?!

Austin Cooper The protagonist *knew* he'd fucked up; what exactly did Brad berating him accomplish? Fuck all. People like Brad may be justified in their anger from time to time, but whenever they vent it they are *not* constructive, they do *not* help, and they succeed only in making a bad situation even worse. I guarantee you Brad gets equally angry at a barista who screws up his coffee order as he did during this story. I have met people of this ilk, and they have only one mode: "insufferable cunt".

So, I thoroughly enjoyed that story, and I certainly understand its selection as the best of this competition. That said... *SPOILERS FOLLOW* I despised the ending: had it ended with the creature saying "no one comes up here", that would've made a fantastic, impactful climax; but as it stands, with a character narrating their own demise from a first-person perspective...that is simply awful, and requires just a touch more suspension of disbelief than I was prepared to provide.

For a minute there, I thought the main character would survive because the beast wanted to make more little monsters with him. But this was not the case, which makes the title take on a new meaning for me. Pervy puns aside, this one was fun. The narrator has a lovely voice, and I love it when a story has more than one voice actor involved.

I would give this a 6/10. The first three-fourths of the story were pretty good, but the ending was a major disappointment. If it had ended with something like, the creature smiling and saying "Nobody comes up here..." might have been good. Otherwise, I enjoyed this.

It was a good tale except for the end. Written POV issues not withstanding it was oddly paced. Plenty of good build up and tension along with some nice atmosphere ultimately bogged down with what I feel is a rushed ending. Now that my plot grievances are out of the way the descriptions and actual writing were very well done and it was easy to imagine the location as well as character details. It's an awesome effort nonetheless and I hope they keep writing and improving their craft!

Good story for ages 5 - 8. However, for Walking Tree entertainment, I highly recommend a movie called 'From Hell It Came' (1957) which has a MUCH cooler tree, because in the movie the tree is not only radioactive, but ALSO tosses people into quicksand while lusting after a female scientist.

I don't know if this story was written to be read on KZbin, but there are some challenges with the performance. The are times when a quality of the voices is described in the text, but not brought into the performance, like at 6:34, where a voice is supposed to come out "cracked and unconvincing" and simply doesn't. So, this is either a difficulty brought up by the writer unnecessarily forecasting the actor's performance, or the performers not delivering what the text is asking for. There were quite a few examples of this, so that I did not end listening to the conclusion. Also, I found the style too heavy in description and not enough development of empathy for the characters. The enjoyment in such a story is to care for what is going to happen. In my listening, this was not achieved. However, all credit for putting something like this together. It takes a lot of organisation and editing, not to mention the sound design.

The creature was so cliche it made me laugh. "Long limbs, extremely tall, unnatural movement". The whole story was pretty cliche really, mysterious news paper, doing something stupid for prize money, the whole "this place is creepy and wrong shit",stuff like that for example. The fact that the leader dies is bogus as well. If he died how does anyone know this story?
