Lovely video scotty. But do you know what is the reliability of the third generation mx5?
2 жыл бұрын
Back in the day I admired your no bullcrap attitude in your videos towards certain brands, but lately I am beginning to think you just read whatever someone writes for you. I had Mazda 6 for 5 years now, all ok until last year oil chain snapped out of the blue. I do my own oil changes and all, i serviced many cars throughout the years and I always believed if you take care of your car engines will last. But these Skyactiv-d engines from Mazda are really nightmares to own like you would say. After my oil chain incident I of course did little googling I see they are plagued with issues like bad cams, oil dilutions due to miserable DPF regeneration programs, oil chain snaps are not that uncommon and happen without any warnings, and fuel consumption in reality is somewhere around 7l/100km and not 4,3l/100km (33mpg and not 54mpg). It is beautiful car doe it misses some fine tuning that you get from more mainstream brands, but these diesel engines are just plain junk and Mazda is shooting itself in the foot with them keep selling them without major reengineering. I will probably not buy not just Mazda, but any other alternative to mainstream brands due to these catastrophic design issues, at least with big brands you know what to expect and mechanics know how to fix it before it happens and usually for better price because there are so many instances.

The first generation CX9 was a joint venture with Ford and vertually identicle to the Ford Edge. Except the CX9 had more room (stretched about 6 inches to allow third-row seating), less weight (through the use of high strength steel), better handling (with a sporty suspention tune) and a more reliable (assembled in Hiroshima) V6 3.7L engine. Suposedly identicle twins, but the CX9 is tons better. Dont believe me; chech out the relative depreciation of the 2012 CX9 and Ford Edge on Kelly's Blue Book.

I had an '88 Mazda MX-6 GT Turbo. Loved the car. In the years that I owned it, the only problem I had with it was a broken stud on the exhaust manifold. After the stud was broken, when you started the engine, it would whine until it warmed up and would staop. The dealer said it was the turbo. I purchased a new turbo and was going to install it myself. I removed the turbo and then noticed the broken stud on the lower part of the manifold. I had to remove the whole manifold to get the broken stud out. I went and purchased new studs and gaskets for manifold and turbo. All was good. Returned new turbo (still in unopened box). All was good. The dealer would have taken me to the cleaners. Zoom, zoom zoom.

Unfortunately, I can not say the same for Mazda reliability. Based on all the information that I could find at the time, the 2015 Mazda CX-5 seems like a winner in the area of performance, style and dependability, so I purchased one. Outside of a stiff ride, blind spots, and the uncomfortable seats, I was good with the car (until I hit the 74k mark). For those who don’t know, there is a service bulletin on 2014-2016 CX-5 regarding defective transaxle units. In a certain serial number range (most of them) the casing of the trans was improperly machined which leaves a critical bearing misaligned. This misalignment causes the bearing to prematurely wear and fail in approximately 70-90k miles. Mine was one of those affected by this issue. Luckily, I still had 3 months left to the power train warranty otherwise I would be paying for the manufacturers incompetence (approx $5k). I am still waiting on the back ordered new unit, but will probably sell it the vehicle the moment the repair is complete. Not impressed!

The rotory is actually just as reliable as Chevy's most common engine, the LS. The problem with rotory engines that people don't understand is it is an enthusiast engine and requires more frequent tear downs than most automotive engines do. It is supposed to follow a schedule like that of a supersport motorcycle. Around 26k to 40k miles a thorough inspecting internally and replacement of worn parts must be done.

The 626 two-door hardtop (2.0L, 5-speed manual, 1982, IIRC.) I bought new was an impressive car. I drove it for four years before selling it. Total maintenance cost? $11.35, as I changed the oil & fluids myself. When after two y I decided to coat the engine with teflon, the average hiway mileage rose 10%, from 36 to 40 mpg (Tested NYC to Memphis & then Memphis to NYC.) Later, I bought a Ford Probe (ca 1988, 2.3L, three-valve; thinking that it had Mazda genes). It was of similar quality. What a pleasure to own & drive for nearly 200,000 miles. Thank you for your history & diagnostic lessons, Scotty.

Helpful to have some rotary maintenance knowledge. Diagnostics at 105K found engine needed be replaced. I like the idea of the MX-30 with rotary range extender engine. The MX-30 rotary engine shouldn't ever have any major issues if you use the car as electric always first for 120 miles and the rotary engine as needed to extend. The 36-minute 80% charging is also fast. The previous small rotary's required lots of over priced premium fuel. Either way regular recharging of the MX-30 could save greatly at the pump.

I am totally a fan of newer Mazda's, especially the CX-5 crossover. I am only a fan of the older Mazda's, the Protege sedan and the MPV minivan.

The Mazda MPv I heard is just as crappy as the Honda Odyssey that’s something Toyota has edge over both Honda or Mazda still. 🤔

Love the 626 and the Mazda 6. Sad to see them go. I had a 626 with a swing vent that oscillated the center vent. Had a standard that I drove to work and back 100 miles a day. Loved it. Have owned a few 6s. Loved zoom zoom. Hate to see it go. Lost my 2019 to a deer. Found a AWD Camry SE. miss my 6. They started putting low profile tires on the 6. No good in the snow in western PA.

I have a 2021 Mazda CX-5 Carbon edition, I love it. Zoom Zoom definitely! 31 to the gallon on the highway. Its also very luxurious without the huge price tag of a Mercedes or something else along those lines.

My wife loved her 2 MX5's--20 years of driving. Depressed? Put the top down. Need more space to haul yard sale finds? Put the top down. Had to replace the top on the first one; otherwise, no repairs. Friend who bought our first one, loves it; still no repairs--what gives? I'm old enough to remember the MG's and Triumph's were a FAR different repair experience. Great video, Scotty.
