No One Likes Jon Kent

Jon Kent being aged up really has been a big focal point for what has hurt dc the past couple years and it hasn’t fully recovered ever since. Think about it. We lost all the great story potential with Clark still raising Jon as a family man and getting to watch him grow up. As soon as Jon is aged up we lost all those great stories and Clark gets kind of tossed aside a bit. It’s a shame.

DC was so obsessed with letting Brian Michael Bendis do anything he wanted without restriction that they let him ruin the best thing to ever happen to Superman. Him raising a son was, to a lot of people, the most relatable he’d ever been and the writing of the family dynamic Tomasi did was truly amazing. He understood Clark Kent so well and wrote Jon like a very likable kid.

I will always maintained aging up my boy Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy is still a massive mistake and it drives me crazy that nobody at dc comics refuse to deage my boy back to his little 10 year old self and we get to see his childhood naturally and the fact that Taylor refuses to undo the damage drives me insane.

If they de age him then they can't explore his sexuality and that's the only thing they care about doing with his character. This was Bendis' sole motivation for aging him up in the first place. DiDio hiring Bendis was such an utter disaster on many levels. But what happened to Jon was the biggest disaster of them all IMO.

Honestly, in my opinion they could just say that the 18 year old Jon is a “dimensional copy” like the Lightyear movie did with Zurg (it’s so dumb and bogus but at least it wouldn’t feel out of place as an explanation for a terrible comic book mess like Bendis created) then show young Jon returned to earth not having aged past 12. Young Jon can still turn out to be bi (when he’s old enough to date) but that way we can still do the good stories that SuperSons and the Kent Family stories had without Lois and Clark having lost years of their lives as a family over a stupid story idea.

Tim comes off as asexual due to his lack of interest in sex/love in the comics, (Cassandra Cain's similar) I always thought was a breath of fresh air compared to Bat-Family sex lives being so overemphasized. The biggest "romance" Tim had was Stephanie Brown and when you read everything with them... it's just odd. I shipped it a lot in the early Robin solo stories (and before I read the comics I loved the idea of Tim dating a villain's daughter who wants to be a good guy and becomes Robin's sidekick. That's a great idea!) but Steph's teenage pregnancy plot where she was pregnant by a one-night-stand made me re-evaluate everything. They acted like gal-pals with her teasing him about being a virgin (while she's obviously not, given she's clearly with child from hooking up with strange dudes) and he was giddily doing pregnancy yoga classes with her! The fact that his reaction was so platonic is bizarre, especially for a teenage boy. I guess the writer was going for a non-judgmental approach to make the storyline of a young unwed mother look nicer cause her friend-boy is supportive... it's still weird as hell though. Personally, I'd prefer asexual Tim. But Tim's in his 20s and people sometimes realize they're bi at that age so it's not a stretch. Tim's notoriously introspective and analytical so him evaluating his feelings for Bernard thoroughly and realizing he liked him as more than a friend felt in-character at least. I like Tim too so it's nice to see him decide to take a chance at being in a relationship with someone who makes him happy. Him deciding to give dating his best friend a try didn't feel like this over-the-top "and now we're married forever and EVER!!!" like Tom Taylor makes Jay and Jon. Tim's bi-realization feels something that had thought put into it at least. Jon meeting Jay and both being instantly smitten and the two not even having history or courtship before being obsessed with each other just seems like Taylor wanted to say, "See BI Superman? I did that! See how he and his GAY boyfriend are in love and not STRAIGHT? Aren't I doing something glorious? Praise me!" With Tim he at least took some time to reflect on the new feelings and Bernard was a friend of Tim's since way back in the 90s Robin solo series so he had years of friendship already there to make it seem plausible that Tim would care enough about this guy to want to date him.

The age up was a terrible idea before any political statement was even added to the mix. It messed up one of the best things DC had going for it in the comics, the Damian/Jon dynamic duo. Obviously it also changed the super family dynamic which was pretty decent too.

As a die hard jon kent fan This was easily one of the biggest and most frustrating things to go through ever as a comic book fan. This burial is along the lines of starfire during new 52A new 52 and Carol Danvers after her r*pe by her son. The fact that the woke audience and DC easy are OK with this treatment shows how low we've come as a fandom because From bendis To Taylor , it has been a Royal s*** show . I believe that if tomasi knew what was going to happen he probably would have never stopped writing the character

Yeah, Jon was my breaking point with DC. I loved Supersons, I loved the fact that Clark had this new role of father and all the potential of seeing Clark and Jon learn and grow as a family and the potential friends Jon would make growing up in a metahuman community. (Also in a sea of girl focused comics, this was a good jumping on point in comics for young boys.) So when they aged him up, I was not happy. it destroyed the dynamic of the Supersons, robbed us of all the stories we could have had between him and his father/family/friends. I kinda liked the idea of this being a possible modern day take on the classic "Superboy and the Legion of Superheros." but that didn't last. So then they made him Bi, like you say, that is not a big deal. I just hate that they made it a big deal. I'm not picking up books based on who is sleeping with who, I just want my action/adventure. (Also you'll notice that even though these characters come out as Bi, they never seem to end up (or at least start up) in an opposite sex relationship. Even then, that wasn't my breaking point. that happened when they made him, of all things, an activist. An Activist? In this world of aliens, superpowers and super science? I get it, we can't have all the problems solved or there will be nothing to fight but it feels like everyone forgets we are not in the real world and when one of the most powerful people in the world is marching the streets with a bunch of multi colored haired people, instead of actually doing something, I was out. Went to my LCS and just dropped all my DC titles, not spending my money to be lectured to. Good luck western comics, yer gonna need it.

Jon should have been focused on by being built up as the Golden Child of DC. Action comics should have became Superman and Son family adventures or something and having Clark and Jon exploring all the insides and outs of the DC building up the mythos for the “next Gen” and after a few years of Jon getting to meet and even train with everyone in some shape or form along that way, taking little lessons he learns and becoming a opinionated teen into a young adult. The development should have been years, Clark deserved to see Jon grow up, us as fans of Superman deserved to see SUPERMAN’s son grow up.

I think Taylor is good with alternate universes of the multiverse or elseworlds same difference at this point but when it comes to thr main universe he kind of sucks lol. My opinion on that. I like your idea with earth 3 having the real Jon from the earth prime main universe and that one is the current one. Maybe they'll kill him off and get a Jon from another universe replace him who's better? Like similar to what they did with Val-Zod replacing the dead Clark of earth 2? I don't know guess we'll see.

I recently got into the comics recently and I gotta agree them aging up Jon was a huge mistake I mean I was happy ot hear that there was a Bisexual (I found this out a bit late after knowing him from Supersons and Dceased) character but they went about in a wrong way seeing something I also did personally read him as bicoded (more in dceased but that could have been me projecting some personally feelings cause I read him that way) But it's sad to see him growing up and being used for more actually world stuff when I always saw comics as a place that takes you away from reality. With Tim (I was more neutral with on his sexuality but was mad that despite him having good chemistry with Steph they throw him with someone else despite Tim and her being favored by fans)

The smartest decision DC could make is say that the young adult Jon is a branch timeline duplicate created during the space travel. His memories being the same as young Jon could be explained by him being a copy. Then show that the young Jon reunite with Clark and Lois. The older Jon can exist and date Jay (maybe they join a team or have interplanetary adventures). They can even still have young Jon realize he’s bi eventually cause that wasn’t inherently the problem with his older self. Being bisexual is no different than any other aspect of his personality. What was bizarre was that he leaves 11 and shows up 18. That’s A LOT of years to miss, he may as well be a whole different person cause we missed the entirety of his formative years. Then add to that that we don’t explore who he is before the focus becomes his love life. The love life is never going to resonate like it would’ve if we saw him age to 18 and invest in who he is before he dates someone. That’s not even getting into how poorly Tom Taylor wrote Jon and Jay as a couple or how he writes like a man who has never met an actual LGBT person and just wants to use them for accolades. Their chemistry doesn’t register at all. I hate dimension/timeline/multiverse crap but if the comics are going to do it as frequently as they do, at least use it to correct THIS mistake. We miss kid Jon. We miss Jon being buddies with Damian. We miss him being a good kid who looks up to his mom and dad! It’s a shame to squander the fact that Superman as a dad to a little son is the most exciting and heartfelt Superman has ever been cause he’s a great father. If I were allowed to change one thing at DC it would be to retcon Jon back to his rightful age cause the stories were something special when he was young.

I have nothing against the LGBT+ community (as I'm a part of it myself), but sorry Jay. Jon's current "bf". If HE'S suppose to be the representation for the "anything but straight" society, I'm sorry, hun. You're just not doing it. (I know this because my family knows I'm a huge DC fan and when they got the global update a bit later than I did, they all brought it up to me that very same way one by one, thinking it was an amazing news. Good for some but, seriously, it nearly drove me crazy hearing it again and again at different times when I was trying to avoid it, but I can't blame them because they didn't know better. What we lost for this. Tho if DC wanted an impact, they certainly got the attention. Not a good one tho.) And it's *frustrating* I tell ya! There's many ways they could've gone about it better but just to make money, all that plot got wasted deep down the drain of no return. They went too fast with this one. He could've been great! He could've been inspiring! Now he's just... one shot fame and then old news. *It's sad.* It really is. Tho I get the importance of getting The Message out there, but this is an ACTION comic book hero??? Where's the action??? If they just wanted a slice of life romcom coming (out) of age story, they *shouldn't* have advertised it as a SUPERhero adventure. I'm not gonna lie. I too have personal ships that are less than canon in DC, but I still kept reading satisfied that even tho they'll never happen, I get to see their lives develop and their writing doesn't get sacrificed for the sake of some fan-fueling cash-grab romance. Their stories will be an escape. Not like this. Not a shove it in your face slap back to reality! A good story inspires people to write or draw AUs of their own! Make head-canons! To dream! This? I remember in pride month dc did a comic with jon with jay nakamira flying wearing the bi flag i honestly feel empty. however a few days later i also saw a fanart with jon child flying with the bi flag and that gave me a smile on my face, because this is the jon kent that i like this was the jon kent that i see develop and grow and Seeing him not being afraid to be who he is and being proud was really good, so if they ever revert jon kent back to his age I hope they treat his sexuality the right way.

I read volume one and enjoyed it thoroughly, he's not a conventional DC hero, he spends more time saving people than fighting ( similar to a traditional superman). His design is excellent, although he looks very tik tok in some covers in the comic itself he rarely looks anything other than like his parents. The comic is extremely wholesome and gives insight into how Kal El's philosophy would impact a child. It's also good representation for the LGBT community which may be taken as cringe but to myself and others is a wholesome addition. Then comic is no masterpiece but it's fun, interesting, looks perfect and is consistently heartwarming.

Personally, I blamed if IIRC Bendis for aging Jon Kent up, seriously, he decided to grow up a character who was just introduced to us for 3 years up to an adult for what purpose. I rather prefer Kid Jon and Damian dynamics and the 2 growing up together. Honestly, they shouldn't have let Bendis aged Jon up so quickly, he would have a better charcter with better development, I remember seeing the time when he was still a kid in Superman Rebirth and his adventure with Damian, and his character arc pre age up is much more better. DC should have gone with the Damian route, instead of instantly growing up and making him an LGBTQ+ icon so quickly. Now he's just Chris kent( new earth) 2.0

The overall problem here that is getting on many people's nerves is the obvious pandering turning straight characters gay just for virtue signal points pisses people off. If they want a gay superhero then invent a new character that is gay but they don't want to do that because they don't want to face the risk of rejection. So they change an existing character that people love to be inclusive to a group of people then the fans voice their complaints and only for the company to attack their consumers thinking that they can silence the opposition which never works. You can't bully readers into siding with your views and another point is that it seems like every time we turn around some long-existing character that was never gay, to begin with, has been turned gay. Not every character needs to be part of the alphabet community we read comics as an escape we don't need political views shoved in our faces.

I honestly never knew a lot about Jon, but I adored his relationship with Damian Wayne, and after seeing him get aged up I feel like there was so much lost potential between Damian and Jon as teammates and best friends. I agree that they should de-age him or at least at best try to fix his character. My problem is literally? The fact he has ZERO personality now. As 10 year old Jon Kent? He was a cute kid, he had interests, he was into anime, Star Wars, like he felt like a kid who liked stuff we could RELATE to AND he also was clearly growing and learning... Cue him getting aged up. Now the aging up in itself wouldn't be AS bad I feel... if they had it where Lois and Clark still got to RAISE him... as it stands they didn't. ALL of the formative years we could have gotten for him? Gone. Now sure I don't want a case where it's like Franklin Richards in Marvel where he's STILL a teen somehow despite being born in the late 70's and even with the sliding time scale SHOULD be at LEAST in his early 20's.... But honestly with Conner Kent being the young adult Superboy... they could have kept Jon as the pre-teen to tween Superboy. DCeased was amazing! So they do know how to write the character well. Your idea of how to fix him was brilliant. Just make both Jonathans bisexual, so you avoid the whole Gay characters are evil thing. But him being the alternate Jon would perfectly explain everything.

With him being bi, it's clear the original creators of Jon Kent never intended for him to be bi. So it feels like they're ruining the visions and work of the original creator. IMO it's just as bad as aging him up and all the other problems with him.

Aging him up was one of the worst decisions DC has made in the recent history of the company. It was great watching Jon learning to be a hero, and we were robbed of that. Hell, him grow up and realizing he was bi could have been fantastic. Gay and bi can realize they are queer at different points in the lives. My uncle was a homosexual and he knew that he was "different" when he was just a kid, but some people don't discover they are gay or bi later in life. So watching Jon come to that realization as he grew up could have been really interesting. You don't even have to give him a boyfriend, the realization alone would have been enough. In the end, DC gave Bendis way too much power and later wanted to make the character more "interesting" by making him bi without actually putting any effort to make the realization interesting. Edit: DC doesn't care about tweets, they care about sales. If the change anything it will because the book isn't selling well, not because of the echo chamber that is Twitter.

Also Jon Kent being aged up was horrible because it took away a lot of great storytelling opportunities of seeing Clark kent and lois lane raise their son Jon kent superboy how to become a great hero and to control his powers responsibly is such a great story that the fact bendis aged up my my boy for his horrible awful Legion of book drives me crazy, and to make it even worst in the current action comics book we see both Clark kent and Lois lane missing there son everyday as his little 10 year old self and the fact Philip Kennedy Johnson gets that across and realizes Jon kent aged up is a massive mistake, is very interesting but also proves to me more and more that even the characters themselves want Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy back to his little 10 year old self and to see him experience childhood naturally. Which again proves my point that DC really needs undo this damage and bring back my boy Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy back to his little 10 year old self and get rid of this awful imposter teenage Jon kent and erase him out of existence. That way we can kill two birds with one stone and have my boy Jon kent go through his childhood first and foremost and see him develop naturally, also a bonus get rid of Jay nakamura nobody likes that character myself included because the guy is a villian and a manipulated asshole from the very beginning at least in my opinion. Now with all that said is though is there way to undo this horrible mistake yes there's simple really this teenage Jon kent is from earth 3 and the real Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy is in stasis tube still his young 10 year old self and when the superfamily find him they release him and real Jon kent kicks this imposter ass and sends this imposter back to earth 3 and boom problem solved everybody wins, but that's just my opinion on this whole entire subject on why people hate aged Up Jonathan Samuel Kent.

I have other ideas like having Jay Nakamura basically be the real villain this whole time he was manipulating Jon, The idea that the one person had in another comment section where do you incorporate the lightyear plot twist and bring back 10 year Jon and have this one as a Jon duplicate. I personally enjoy the one where Jay is a villain and he’s manipulating this Jon 😏

I’ve stopped reading comics years ago and seems like I’ll still wait until the entire thing collapses and reboots before I give it another shot. At this point, I’m only interested in superhero stuff if Zack Snyder gets to complete his Snyderverse movies. Justice League Part 2 and Part 3, alongside a solo Batfleck movie against Deathstroke and David Ayer’s original cut of Suicide Squad. That’s it.

Back when Jon was still a kid and Damian Wayne's best friend, I loved the character immediately. His outgoing personality; sometimes childish but sometimes mature than Damian. His hobbies, his relationship with Clark and Lois, the happy family environment for a little boy... everything about the character made me smile but after that age up he's pointless. There's so much wrong with the character, he almost looks lifeless. No personality, struggling to handle everything as Superman (obviously because he was suddenly handed over the title while he was still a little boy learning to be a good superboy). Some people don't want him deaged and those are obviously the shippers. Anyways, I'm really glad that they cancelled this series and hopefully they'll de age him back to normal.

The way i would fix of Jon Kent is to reveal that he never went to earth 3 and got age up. Instead Superboy-Prime captured him and put in suspended animation. And Prime did it to impersonate Jon and Prime reveals all of this by napping jay nakamura neck and then he tear off his shirt to show the iconic s scar. Eventually Jon escapes and has to defeat Prime and save the world, but even with superpowers he still is a ten years old kid facing off against a superpower psychopath, so Jon has to use everything that his father taught him to overcome incredible odds proving his own worth and returning triumphantly to the DC Universe.

My problem with Jon since the age up, has been the lack of continuity for Superboy and Supergirl. If anything Conner and Kara should have been able to help Clark mentor Jon into becoming THE best Superman. But no, they aged Jon up and then sidelined Conner and actually DEAGED him lmao. Any recent books with Conner in it, has him looking like he’s 15, when he and his age group are supposed to be College aged people now. Conner and Kara deserve a bit more respect

Tom Taylor should just write Green Arrow! We haven't had a GA book since Percy's excellent run! Honestly I love all the leftie shit in the book, but A: that doesn't necessarily belong in a Superman book and B: if you want to bring your message across, you need to still be entertaining! Most importantly mewly established characters need A PERSONALITY! One beyond reminding people they are gay, whenever there's a gap in the conversation. Tom can and should do better! DCeased arguably is a commentary on our digital age, but it was still entertaining and developed characters!

Everybody loves Jon Kent in Super Sons. Everybody hated Damian Wayne (because he is a smug asshole), but loved his dynamic with Jon Kent. Super Sons gave you a glimpse to what would a kid superman and kid "Batman" do and how would they navigate in the superhero world, and yet at the same time showing that both of them are somewhat different characters from their parents (Damian is not Bruce, Jon is not Clark). Super Sons allowed the readers to grow with the characters no matter how old the reader is. Gay Jon Kent sucked (figuratively and literally I guess behind the scenes * blergh * 🤮). Superman is a symbol of hope, of persevering through insurmountable odds, ever fighting but without losing one's humanity. Gay Jon Kent is always on the verge of giving up, telling (is it himself?) over and over that he is not worthy of the mantle. That goes against who Superman is.
