DIY Van Build Series 🚐
If you're learning how to build cabinets in your van, you'll quickly learn that most people finish their cabinetry using PAINT. I also painted the cabinets in my first van conversion! I'm not one to cut corners, so I put in the effort needed to make my painted cabinets look amazing. That effort was EXTREMELY time-consuming. This time around, I wanted to avoid painting any of my cabinetry so I went on a quest to find an alternative solution. I decided to use High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) in this van conversion and I think it looks WAY nicer. I love the finished product so I thought I'd share about my experience for anyone looking to learn how to build and finish their cabinets. Hope you enjoy!

I am not a painter. I tried a few panels and I hated it. Then I got some professional help and then hated it more. I just finished my FIRST HPL PANEL 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯. Usually #SevenOSavage is my hero. Today it is you. #Salute.

The finished product looks beautiful and I’m sure it’ll hold up well. I’ve seen the HPL used on professional build but not by any of the DIY channels I watch. I’m sure you’ve inspired many DIY’ers to try it. Looking forward to seeing you more. 🚐

Awesome video Scott! Thanks for sharing this technique. Painting is indeed time consuming and stressful 😂. Looking forward to the edge finishing video.

Scott. I used laminate on all surfaces on my first van and it held up perfectly. It's incredibly durable and easily cleaned. The color and design options are endless and like you're doing, you can mix and match options. I made my own countertops with this as well. You are the first person that I've seen to use this and while it can be intimidating at first I believe anyone can do it. You also used marine vinyl on your ceiling, surprise I did that as well. I actually used that vinyl on my wall surfaces above countertop height as well. Looked amazing and held up perfectly.

Hey Scott. Just came across your channel from Levi's video. Great stuff so far. Just wondering how you finished the edges of the ply? We've considered laminate in our builds but don't have one of those edge machines that cabinet makers have so have stuck with paint. Anyways - keep up the good work!

Here's a tip on placing the Laminate on the board after the application of cement. Instead of using a bunch of sticks or doweling I use a thick plastic like 10 mil. Lay the plastic over the cemented wood. The plastic will not stick to the cement. Then place your laminate on top of the plastic.....again the plastic will not stick to the laminate. Placement can be adjusted with real tight tolerances. Then clamp one end to secure the laminates placement. Start pulling the plastic back towards the clamped end. This will then make contact and is secured. You can remove the clamps and continue to pull the plastic out. It's kind of like pealing the protective layer on double sided tape.

Yep, HPL is the way to go for a professional look, for certain cabinets, you can laminate the components separately then assemble them after. If I may add: plywood panels need to be laminated on both sides and not too long between the applications, if not, they will curve badly.
@scottadamson6116
@scottadamson6116 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I did both sides 1 side in color and the other side on standard bright white

Hi Scott! You have really opened my eyes to the benefits of HPL. I noticed that wilsonart has an option for pre-glued (peel off) backing. Have you considered using that?

Scott can you use HPL on thin ply as an 80/20 facing, but wrap the excess around the 80/20 to cover the aluminium inside the cabinets?

Hey Scott, I've been following you for a little bit and wanted to reach out since you're so helpful (and responsive to comments). When I pressed play I knew you were going to mention laminate because there's only so many ways to finish a cabinet. ;) I'm so glad you went in-depth, because I have been planning to use HPL in my build when that step comes, but I didn't know where to start. It's one of the sleekest, sturdiest materials, IMO. Did you do the inside of the faces too? Thanks again and make sure you put that HPL company in the description :) P. S. I love your editing style and how you throw in little stills

I’m also thinking to use the hpl. How did you finish the edges? I did some test with some HPL but the hardest part was glueing the edges and the cut the excess with the hand router without scratching the Hpl. Any advice?

Hi, great video. I had never considered using a laminate, I always thought it would be a nightmare to work with. It looks doable though with proper care and attention 👍. What thickness of plywood did you use as the sub base for the laminate?

From one Canadian to another Canadian - great job eh! Two questions... 1: Can the HPL be used on entire walls?, 2: Why does the laminate piece not stick to the wood slats that you put down - seems weird that it didn't stick to the slats.
@RichieRich7
@RichieRich7 3 жыл бұрын
You put the contact cement on both surfaces. It won't stick well on surfaces without the contact cement (the scrap wood). Once the 2 surfaces with contact cement touch it's really really hard to pull them apart without breaking the HPL.
@scottadamson6116
@scottadamson6116 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly its a contact cement so both surfaces need to have the adhesive applied for it to stick.

Is this HPL nonflammable? Is it flame retardant HPL - unlike the standard ones, manufactured with special additives that make them flame resistant? I would also use nonflammable contact cement (e.g. Dap Weldwood Nonflammable Contact Cement).
