I like red dots, I’ve been shooting them for a while. Having said that, within 10-15 yards they don’t really make a difference, so for ccw to relieve bulk and weight, I can see a case. Beyond 15 yards the dot does start to make a significant difference.

There is always a cost/benefit analysis to be made. For the average person in the lower tax brackets, a $600 pistol with a $150 light and a $50-$200 holster adds up quick, and for a lot of people that $300-$500 for a red dot would be better than spent on ammo. This is a poor argument. Although I understand your logic, in the real world it’s fallable. First, comparing by your prices a 1000 dollar handgun with a 3-5k rifle aren’t in the same ball park. Secondly. No one said it has to be purchased all at once, and the vast…..vast majority of individuals poorly spend their money with no direction. If they did, they could afford far more than they realize. But a 6 dollar coffee everyday for a month at Starbucks is 200 bucks right there…

I’ve run a bunch of different dots on my pistols in competition for years. Trijicon, HS, Sig and Cmore. None of them have ever failed. But like all high speed gear , you install them properly , maintain, clean and inspect them. I clean my guns after every use. Confirm my zero on every range trip. Change batteries regularly. Use proper lens cleaning technique. Are dots a better sighting system then irons ? .. of course , unless you have an eyesight issue like a severe astigmatism ( but some reticules are better than others for that ) I’ve cracked a lens , stripped screws etc but other parts on my guns have broken or failed and required replacement just like on any other tool or sports equipment that I use a lot. Dot shooters typically fill out the leader board at competitions simply because they are measurably faster and more accurate . When you match 2 shooters of the exact same proficiency against each other the dot shooter will typically win. Thats what the stats say anyway .

I was a late adopter of dots on pistols but now I’m sold. Is it a “must have” on a concealed carry gun IMO? No but it’s definitely nice to have and does give you more capability. What convinced me was taking an advanced pistol class with a 48MOS with a Holosun 507k. When things got “dynamic” is where the dot shined. Shooting on the move, in funky positions, single handed, or moving targets all became easier with a dot. That being said, there is a frustrating learning curve i had to work through.

Just a testament to the RMR's durability. Specifically a Trijicon Rmr RM06 type 2--I have one mounted on my G19 mos. Well, on Sunday of this past week I started shooting some bulk Norma ammo(normally good ammo imo, never had any issues with it and it is always accurate). Anyway, I got 2 significant jams that "tap, rack" wouldn't rectify. The slide was simply stuck slightly out of battery and due to the Gen 5 coating on the slide it was very hard to get a strong enough grip to rip the slide open. Well, I just racked it off the bed of my truck using my RMR as leverage and the round ejected. The optic is fine and didn't even lose zero. In the past I've also dropped it onto concrete and frozen ground and fallen onto the gun with optic mounted(ice is slippery! I fell directly onto my holster, great thing Glocks are drop safe LOL). 100% I trust my life to the Trijicon RMR type 2. It has also helped me become a better pistol shooter. If I do my part properly I can make 100 yard shots with random range ammo and that's not an exaggeration. I nowadays do most of my practice at 25 yards because the red dot has made it trivial and the pistol bays at my gun club go out to 25 so I just practice there. I love red dots on pistols and I don't understand the persistent debate around them. The only people who shouldn't use them are people with bad astigmatism and I'm sure for them at some point a company like Eotech will miniaturize their holographic tech OR SOMETHING will come along that will alleviate the issue--I've actually heard some people with astigmatism say holosun works good for them due to the reticle I guess.

And it’s not only cops that have to deal with it. Citizens that take the safety of their loved ones seriously are the actual first responders and defenders of our safety during a violent attack are left to clean up and defend against the mess the “justice’ system has made. Uncle Ted got it absolutely right when he called it “Engineered recidivism”. Sorry for the rant. But it needs to said loud and often. It’s not the guns causing the problems. Two words sir CLOSED EMITTER. I’m sorry not to be rude but this is simply another ridiculously flawed excuse. Does it rain 24/7 365 where you live? You’re carrying concealed I assume so your clothing will keep your dot dry unless you like to jump in a pool on a rainy day, if rain makes dots ineffective then why do we run them on rifles? If inclement weather is legit your excuse I’m sorry you simply have no idea what you’re talking about. I am in no way trying to be rude but dude this excuse has been disproven time and time and time and time again. If you simply just don’t want to run a dot cause you don’t want to cool 🤷🏻♂️
@HondaRiderX172 жыл бұрын
@@Chrisblau I don't take any of that as rude in any way but I think your logic is flawed. In the Pacific Northwest rain is a constant problem. Open or closed emitter doesn't matter. If you can't see through the glass you can't see the glass simple as that. I Have the same problems with my rifle scopes on my hunting rifles, binoculars, range finders, red dots and ACOGs. Heck even glasses will fog to the point where they are unusable everything with a lens has this problem. It does not matter on my hunting equipment because I can simply not take a shot but on the gear I used to defend myself for me it's mandatory that that optic be removed to expose irons. If I could take my RMR off my Glock quickly and easily I would have no problem with a dot on my handgun. I prefer it over irons. But the fact that I can't makes the handgun unusable in some situations You are right that it stay clean when concealed but I don't only expect my handgun to be usable when coming out of concealment. I feel the debate is happening because of footprints and type of red dots. For example quality of do it all plates (Glock MOS), screw issues (breaking). Batteries under the optic, color of dots, I like my Sigs but then I get limited how they cut the footprint. Now I am limited to which optic. S&W made plastic plates that broke, if you are like me and prefer a closed emitter then there are little options. Then when you find the optic now it does not match your gun. Does one buy a gun to match the optic they like or buy the gun and settle for the optic. Plates are a failure point. It will get better. But the argument I do not believe is because of the red dot versus irons (sometimes it is) but I experience confusion on the fitment. Plus a red dot combo that resolves the new shooter concerns are far more expensive. Time will bring the cost down. I was just looking at a new P226 legion and I asked what be the factory red dot cut was for. I knew but I wanted to see if they could tell me. They did not know. This is a $1300 cut for certain optics. They could not even tell me that crucial info. Imagine a new shooter. Time will fix this.

@JohnSmith-yx8kf2 жыл бұрын
Cross eye dominance is literally solved by red dots, and is only an issue with irons. Cross eye dominance is also not really an issue with pistols anyway, you just present to your dominant eye if you need to. People confuse eye dominance and other separate eye issues all the time. Vision quality (focus, astigmatism, etc) has absolutely nothing to do with dominance.

The first time I shot a dot gun I was sold. I only own one pistol with a dot though because I don't wanna sell what I've already bought to get the optics cut versions. The biggest reason I don't have a dot on everything possible is just the added cost of milling and buying a 3 to 500 dollar optic for everything. With out a doubt though red dots make hitting what your shooting at easier.

Here is why I prefer iron sights on my pistol: Red dots shine on rifles and have become an almost mandatory accessory, but this does not mean a red dot will work equally as well on a pistol because the two platforms have a few fundamental differences. A rifles inherent advantage is that when you bring a rifle up to your cheek, you have a consistent sight picture. A pistol by nature lacks a point of contact with your cheek and by extension, your eye resulting in a far less consistent sight picture. In MY experience, the consistency of a sight picture is fundamental to the efficacy of a red dot sight, more so than even iron sights. Iron sights, like red dot sights, are governed by your sight picture consistency, however, they are physical, tangible objects on a gun that can be referenced even when your alignment is not perfect. A red dot sight is a single plane with a visual marker showing where your shot will go. There are MANY advantages to a red dot sight, however, the one major drawback (in my view) is that there is no physical, tangible reference point when the dot is obscured or misaligned. On a rifle, this single disadvantage is almost completely negated due to the CONSISTENCY of the sight picture provided by a rifle. A pistol on the other has a much less consistent sight picture. This is one reason why “finding the dot” is an issue on pistols but not on rifles. These consistency issues will of course be fixed with proper training but we must also take into account the adverse conditions we may face when carrying, when in a disadvantagious position, or when under stress. When we misalign iron sights, this misalignment is not as obvious to us because we ALWAYS have the physical sights out there in front still acting as reference points. Red dots on the other hand completely disappear when the dot is off a significant amount. On its own, a red dot sight on a pistol is not ideal for many civilian pistol owners and there are many reasons to still use irons.

This is where the ACSS giant ring has a distinct advantage in helping you attain the dot. You almost subliminally know where to find your dot when you see the ring in a certain area
@Shankdaddy1611 ай бұрын
@@PitbullSoco I do think that style of reticle is a step in the right direction. I think peopel need something to reference off of to align the dot when you can’t get a perfect picture. I’m sure they’ll come up with some kind of fix for this issue.

First pistol upgrade needs to be a light, not a red dot. The next upgrade if funds are available is maybe the red dot, there is a crapload of handguns out there that are not compatible with red dots and installing one requires machining into the slide which can ruin a gun if the person does not know what they are doing. My first red dot would automatically turn off after say 4 hours and the constant on wasn't a thing and if it was I never found that feature and I didn't want to have to turn on my sights if i had to defend myself (gave it away). My second red dot failed within two weeks of me getting it, I am on my third dot and i have placed it on my .22lr where it works extremely well in that role. If you do have a dot on a gun then maybe replace batteries on your birthday, I just have not been impressed with the advantages. Even during the shown demonstration, the speed at 7 yards was marginally better and the accuracy was said to be better but the group sizes where virtually the same but at difference red dots are much better. If you want a dot, great if not than I don't believe its a big deal.
@TennisPro46862892 жыл бұрын
What dot do you have that you put on your red dot? I’d disagree with most of what you said. More and more handguns are being built optics ready. Like almost all semi popular guns. Of my handguns I only have one that is red dot compatible all others will require a machinist if I want an dot on one. Personally I have been to a low level three gun and people struggled because of their red dots. Timer started and they bring up gun, realize their optic is off drop the gun and turn on optic and then have to bring it back up, got so bad that RSO started telling people to make sure their dot was on during the load and make ready stage to every shooter who went up with a dot.
