After what now looks like ages on the fence about RDS on pistols, and because my old eyes are nothing like the way they used to be and they won't improve either, I finally dived cussing, screaming and yelling into basically re-learning to shoot a pistol, particularly consistently acquiring and ingraining a new type of sight picture from a concealed draw, that would be adequate for serious social work, ie: self defense. Since I'm an old dog and it's harder for us to learn new tricks, I had not only to really work at it but also work at coming back and restarting the process after actually quitting in disgust a few times over. Thing is particularly at the beginning of the learning curve, I was really going back in time a TON as far as performance and maybe even worst, my confidence to get me through a SHTF scenario with this new equipment ... But I've also been told many times over that I am way more stubborn than smart, so I came back at it time and again, for I'd say a period of well over a year. And at least for me, there was no "aha!" moment either but rather a slow and then faster, and faster realization that I was getting the hang of it to the point where I was consistently achieving "sort of effortlessly" better performances than ever before and have now totally transition to that platform for my EDC. And now I even wonder how the heck did I ever do without it for so long. So yeah... at least for me, it's way better than iron sights but the improvement is not immediate and effortless. You have to earn it.

didn't expect to learn anything much but the idea of low 6 o'clock hold for zero at distance(1:10:00) blew my mind but makes perfect sense, my sig iron sights are meant to cover your target (POA=POI) but I'm always shooting low because I don't want to occlude my target with the front sight.

50:00 I have thought about this with not being able to get off the front of my LPVO and wondered if that would still work. Thanks for mentioning this little bit actually.

Well thanks a lot, I guess I'm ordering the Toro kit for my G3, great pistol btw. This is going to be a nice upgrade along with the Lakeline barrel and compensator, I can't wait.

recently emailed Vortex about which they recommend for the Taurus Raging Hunter 44 mag, they replied Viper. mounted the Viper on said revolver, after every 2 shots the pic rail mount would come loose using the recommended torque for that screw, had to use loctite to keep it from coming loose every 2 shots and losing zero.

This is the perfect podcast for me! I am so glad I subbed a little while ago. My local gun store is a dealer for y'all, and I was eyeing both the venom and the viper. I am leaning towards the venom for my ppq q5 because of the sight window and top loaded battery for steel challenge. Do you guys know if the venom or viper will fit on the delta point pro, rmr or Docter mounting plate that came with the ppq?
@VortexNation5 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Glad we had it at just the right time. None of our dots will match up to the Delta Point or RMR plates unfortunately. The Viper and Venom use the same plates as the Docter/Burris Fastfire red dots and we believe some others as well now, too, but those are two of the bigger names to reference.

Don't bother, you will be far more precise with a scope. I've tested this just recently on my AR. Even at 25 the scope is much more precise. The dot is faster to acquire. Horses for courses 😉

Question: what's the differences between handgun shaped red dots and one shaped like a tube (like the common SIG Romeo)¿
@VortexNation3 жыл бұрын
Size/form factor/shape and a little bit durability. They function identically, but an “Open top” red dot that you see on pistols most of the time has stripped away any bit of the body that is unnecessary to function in order to achieve the smallest possible optic. In doing so, it fits much better on a pistol, occluded your vision much less, but isn’t up to taking quite as much of the beating those little closed emitter red dots can.

Question: are frame mounted red dots (like the one with the blue mount in the vid) inherently less prone to damage than those that are slide mounted? I always thought adding an optic to a fast reciprocating mass like a slide would put the optic through a lot of unnecessary and potentially damaging motion, kind of like putting a scope on a rifle's bolt. Shouldn't optics ideally be on a fixed format which ensures they move as little as possible?
@jamesdomenico29532 жыл бұрын
On Competition Open guns the optic will remain on the Optic Frame mount. In everyday practical use I cannot see the optics ever on an Optic Frame mount versus the slide. Optics on Optic Frame mounts do not receive as much abuse as slide ride optics as observed by the number of optics needing warranty repair on slide ride options in the competition world versus optics seem to be more reliable and less are sent back for warranty when used on a Frame Mount.

I remember the 90's race guns. Very expensive 38 Super's with very short barrel life. I'd be doing practical pistol now if they hadn't banned them here. Should have emigrated at that time!

That cost thing. I can tell you that the height of trijicon night sights on the fnx 509 and 45 tactical are the exact same height as trijicon rmr.... if you wanted the easiest methods sometimes that just means sticking with the same manufacturer. But, that mite not mean best cost as obviously that’s a 1200$ pistol and 500$ dot. They know what they are doing and when they get something right that’s the easiest way like just two screws and it’s perfect cowitness they charge. But in my op most cases are that if you just stick with same manufacturer you’ll find easiest way to mix match stuff.

I am still new to guns but what is super annoying as f* about gun stuff especially optics is you need an adapter for f*ing everything. It really gets old fast I am not going to buy this optic sh!t anymore. I spend half my time looking for stupid plates or adapters this sh!t is worse then computer cables.
