On the s10, you can cut a hole in the center of the stock a arm, use an extended ball joint to give you more front extension. Also use a good bump steer kit and dont use drop spindles to lower it

Not being much interested in the drag racing world much less no prep at the time I found SRC when I was browsing on KZbin to see what people were doing to put LS engines in S-10’s. I watched a little bit of Street Outlaws years ago but wasn’t at all interested in watching not very attainable tube chassis drag cars being raced on the street.. I just wanted to build a lil street rod out of my Sonoma I already had. Although Billy and Tommy run Chevy small blocks I stayed watching them due to the content and relate abilities. Up until like last year Billy’s truck chassis was basically stock except for caltracs, Viking shocks, bump steer kit and 1in upper ball joint…. Had factory springs front and rear along with factory A-arms. Granted Tommy’s truck hasn’t been running for a long time, I’ve watched Billy put countless cars on the trailer that people spent a ton of money upgrading the suspension.. It was bitter sweet watching Billy upgrade his lil truck this last year. The SRC family/team damn sure know how to get a lil S-10 down the street. I like the hell outta Nicky Bobby. He is a cool as hell dude. Really enjoy watching his channel. Love he has shown the S-10 platform love by offering parts for them. But Billy and the SRC family/team have proven you need a fast as fuk truck before you need to upgrade the chassis/suspension on it. I’m thankful I found SRC channel.. I would talk to my friends about dropping a kinda healthy LS in my Sonoma and they swore I’d have to do all sorts of chassis and suspension fabrication at it to get it to work and get any sort of traction. I would just show them videos of Billy’s lil truck before he did all the upgrades lifting the front tires on a bare road and laugh at them.

Hey Kevin. Off topic, but I might be gearing up to start working on my 78 Trans Am with Hurst hatch T-tops. I’m thinking restomod and just having it as a fun street rod and maybe do drag and drives with it. Currently thinking of it capable of 10’s without pushing it to hard, but not wanting to twist it up. Do you think I could accomplish that pretty safely by putting boxed in frame rails on the rear and adding subframe connectors? Which would you recommend? Im not totally apposed to putting a cage in it. However I’m 50 and not really excited about having to climb over a bar to get into it. lol. Also with it being a t-top car I don’t really think I would like bars running across the top in the t-top opening. Hurst hatch t-tops are pretty small. I’m not apposed to running the 2 bars from the front hoop to that main hoop down the center and maybe adding some gussets to stiffin the front hoop up.
@KevinWilsonSBC
@KevinWilsonSBC 6 ай бұрын
I highly recommend the sub-frame connectors as 1st step. You will see the most improvement there. Then boxing in the frame rails is always a good move to help provide more support. I would really recommend as a 2nd step even before boxing in the frame rails would be upgrading to a high quality leaf spring bushings, along with even considering upgrading the leaf springs that are now over 35 yrs old. I do not think many realize leaf springs do weaken over time, especially after 35 years. Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

Curious that you mentioned pinion angles. I find 3-4° is the sweet spot to keep the rear U joint happy on a leaf spring deal. Other than that what do you feel is the advantage to changing the angle?
@KevinWilsonSBC
@KevinWilsonSBC 6 ай бұрын
The only reason you set pinion angle is to get parallel centerlines b/w the pinion and engine/trans. Adding more static pinion angle than needed really only causes issues premature u-joint failure, vibration and non-uniform velocity.

I wish I could figurer out how to make leaf spring, caltrac setup work on a full wieght f150 that is turbo charged and NO transbrake. The problem is it starts separating while building boost. I run out of separating pretty quick when it uses it up on the 2 step.
@KevinWilsonSBC
@KevinWilsonSBC 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, the transbrake would stop the loading of the rear end and you are building boost against the converter without a transbrake so you are loading the rear for sure. If you are absolutely not going to get a transbrake, you will need some very strong rebound valving to work against the torque while getting on the 2 step. Even then the "velocity" of movement at the rear is low, so I am not sure the aggressive rebound valving will actually hold it even still. Sorry. Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

One problem with the large amount of front travel is you do lose front end stability on the top end. Personally i think some of this is trying to reinvent the wheel or crutch. 10-12" of travel but they keep the crank centerline down at a prep track level. Engine set back, granted some events you have to keep stock firewall. Wheelbase is another, everyone has seemed to have forgotten about the days altered wheelbase cars. Lots of things you can do to use the natural weight of the car and use it as a lever without having to crutch it with lead and trophy truck travel

@@KevinWilsonSBC I get that and enjoy your videos hence I'm subscribed, this is ment as dialogue not a$$holism. My point is too much monkey see monkey do without thought or research anymore by people. You watch some of the no preps and people with long travel forget what comes up must come down, get out of the throttle, that pendulum comes flying back, and then their spinning or in the wall. Joey's BB Mustang has the right idea with the long travel stuff running air in the front allowing the sus. to stay loaded and avoiding that pendulum affect at the same time.
