So with the weapon durability, it doesn’t outright destroy your sword you spent time upgrading and enchanting, it just de-equips and you can repair later to be able to use again. Weapon degradation was only ever a problem when you lose the weapons after they break fully.

I'm one of those guys that got hooked and sunk 100+ hours into a game that only has about 15 hours of content. It's such a good core game. I had almost no expectations for this game, I liked Ori but not enough to buy the sequel so when I got my hands on this I wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out, a Wicked good time. I disagree with a lot of the gripes people have and it sucks to see the reviews are so low because of some of those features. It takes about 10 deaths for your gear to break and it cost maybe a silver to repair which you get from selling 1-2 items. I really didn't think it was a big deal when in every Fromsoft game you lost ALL your currency if you died twice. I almost never had my gear break either because if you're opening up every chest you find, you should be drowning in repair kits too so you don't even need to visit the blacksmith. This felt like people coming in expecting a Diablo and got met with a souls-like instead. Wit the teleport system, I think this is a case of only having Act 1 available. When you get to town "fast travel is unlocked" and the menu looks like it's meant to show more than a single location. I think they're going for an approach similar to Dark Souls 1 where you upgrade the teleport system throughout the story. There's just only the one act atm so you can't see that. I have a lot of thoughts on the game, but I'll leave it at that. There's a lot this team has going on, and some of it is extremely ambitious. I wish I had the skillset to apply for a job because I would love to learn how they've delivered something so extraordinary without having a catalog of games like studios behind most souls-likes. It's really something special.

It was a bit heavy handed at release. People don’t update reviews though, which sucks. Apparently a developer taking feedback and applying proper fixes *in early access* isn’t worth celebrating to them. Don’t let the negative reviews get you down. When 1.0 hits, we will be the ones who can sit back and say “bro, I liked it before it was cool” hahaha

Counting off the top of my head, there are 4 biomes, not counting the end-game dungeon as it's own, nor the city. Repair cost can be pretty brutal early on when you are learning things, but before the first boss it's free. And it could be argued player knowledge can do a LOT. By the time I beat the first boss, I did so wearing only my weapon and shield. Everything else had broken, I'd run out of food, and was frustrated enough to see if I could actually beat him like that. Also, repair costs are pretty much a non-issue from about level 11 on. By then you shouldn't die too often, and you'll have enough drops you don't need that you can sell to get money. (DO NOT sell the 'popcorn' icon. It's important later on.) Also note to this is a level based, and gear based, game. If you are struggling against a boss, or particular enemy group. Just don't. Turn around, walk away, go somewhere else. You may find a new area you haven't been yet, or you can fight enemies that might be easier for you at the time and level up a bit. I'll be surprised if full launch is more than 1 year off from how solid it is so far.

@@thomasmahler That wasn't meant to reflect on this studio. Everything I've heard about Ori is excellent (certainly visually beautiful), and this sounds better... if maybe still not really my thing. I was mostly commenting on other studios. I'm not a fan of trying to sell 10-years of DLC for a game that hasn't found a real audience or created a demand for that kind of support. It makes more sense to first make the game, and if demand exists and people like it, then you support it for ten-years. Ideally, with reasonably priced expansions that add features and content people actually want. Developers always seem to want the GTA5-like cash cow without the foundations to make it work. Loving this game so far! Two of the biggest esrly complaints I've seen (durability, and limited healing items) are both able to be completely mitigated just a couple hours into the game. If you like to back-track, farm, and gather a lot, you will never run out of food since you'll only ever need it in a pinch since you can use your focus to heal nesrly a third of your hp, and also gain life steal and passive regen just a few hours in.

I agree, although I think dark souls perfected the healing item mechanic. I think an estus flask-like thing would fit perfectly in this game. But this could be the new “git gud” meme.
@rerunroger6 ай бұрын
A mechanic becoming redundant isn't a great argument against it being frustrating to begin with. I agree with your experience; I also found the healing to not be a constraint after gathering momentum, but this still doesn't save it from being a misplaced mechanic in a game of this style. I have practically infinite healing items against later bosses, even though I never need them, when an Estus system would allow for better resource balancing, such that you always have some healing charges when struggling with a fight, but never so much that healing becomes trivial.
@truedps86 ай бұрын
@@Chopzi11a While I think Dark Souls perfected the healing mechanic for that type of game, No Rest for the Wicked is not really a 1 to 1 comparison. My only complaint at all is that I’m once again frustrated with how obsessed so many games are with medieval fantasy as the base setting and aesthetic. I grant a lot of grace for original & intriguing execution which from the sounds of it at least in the story department Moon is doing some compelling stuff. However overall I think the industry has an issue with not branching out to more original aesthetics. Particularly when the Ori series had a knack for crafting surreal fairytale fantasy, I think they absolutely could have nailed swinging for something much further afield than the medieval fantasy aesthetic it shares with contemporaries like Diablo & Path of Exile and made it seriously pop with the incredible art style they’ve utilized

I realize that this is an unpopular opinion because everyone is contractually obligated to love Dark Souls and worship Hidetaka Miyazaki as the reincarnation of Jesus that we all know him to be, but "Souls-Like" is becoming the most fucking broad genre in the medium. Literally every game that has action combat, or a difficulty above braindead, or is third person, or has RPG mechanics, or has a story that isnt 100% spoonfed to you, or has good graphics, or dark themes, a dark color palet, or is popular is being called a "Souls-Like". Calling every game a "Souls-Like" is the new calling every game a "Masterpiece" and we need to stop and find new words to discribe things cause this shit is played out.

I agree. I remember people complaining that Rise of the ronin wasn't a souls like game because it offered difficulty settings. And I asked the souls fanboys. What makes a game souls like, it cant be just being a hard game, since by that logic megaman, battle toads, contra and ghost and goblins are all souls like games. Due to the difficulty. But then they say these games aren't. So in reality nobody really knows what makes a game "souls like" not even the so called fans....

I absolutely loved both Ori games & this is coming from someone who hates platforming games. I still have the soundtrack on my phone & listen to it from time to time. Great to see Moon Studios have made another great passion project. Just like with Arrowhead's Helldivers 2, you can tell by the sheer quality of the game when talented & creative artists make something they are passionate about.

The art direction reminds me of Vanillaware games like Dragons Crown, Muramasa, and Odin Sphere.

Other than some quality of life stuff and the uneven performances at first, after 20 hours, I’m loving this game. They also update it quite often, granted it just released.

Yeah it does. Gorgeous game. Essentially Dark Souls + Diablo. Combat and exploration is like Dark Souls, while the camera, loot, and world progression are all more Diablo-like. Amazing game. I've put in a stupid amount of hours into this already and it's only chapter 1.

This is such an amazing looking game. Can't wait for 1.0, not only for console release, but for co-op so we can tackle this together with my wife 🙏 They have made so many terrific choices so let's hope we also get local co-op, good luck MOON!

Yep here to say this is a future GOTY contender. It won't be as big as BG3 it certainly has potential to be Hades big and I'm here for it

Once they get it more optimized Im excited to play it. I have an AMD Ryzen 9 5900, 16 gigs of ram and and RTX 3080, and I can barely hit 50 frames when I run it at 1080p and nothings going on, and it stutters hard when stuff gets going, making the combat feel even tougher when theres random delays. They have DLSS as 'coming soon' in the settings so maybe that will help

played 70 hours so far and I must say I've been having a really hard time putting it down. the exploration is fun (even if sometimes I fall down from ledges and such like a doofus), the combat has nice feedback, the artstyle is charming, the characters have depth. the only downside for me is that only chapter 1 is accessible for now, I'm looking forward to see the rest of the game. oh and also the devs deserve a shoutout too, they release hotfixes very frequently. game entered early access at april 18, now it's may 1 and we are already at hotfix #6.

The level design and verticality seems to beg for a Dark Souls 1 comparison, but I'm convinced that half the magic sauce of DS1 was the non-locked camera inmersion in that world. Finding the right view angle to shoot 50 arrows into the dragons tail on the bridge. Its like a puzzle where position and camera angle lets you discover new things. Kind of like the hidden puzzles in The Witness. I dont love locked isometric views for this reason.

My biggest grab with this game is I can’t even play it, I purchased it day 1 and it doesn’t have PS5 controller support…
