A sweet lady came to my house today because a tree fell on my house. When she went in back of my house she was enjoying my tomatoes plants, she lives in a townhouse never D.C. and wanted to start doing some pots with veggies. By the time she left I give her 4 tomatoe plants and 3 pepper plants. She was a happy lady and I really feel good about sharing in these times.

@@joewallsmonsterhunte I don't wear gloves a lot. Sometimes going bare handed tells you things about your soil you wouldn't know otherwise. Wet soil, dry soil, clumpy soil all have a feel to them. After a while of soil testing and handling soil with your hands, you can stop the general tests, as you'll know how it feels. There are a few minerals that are still good to test for, but the major soil issues, you can grab some soil and know what you need to add right off. Then you can test for things like iodine, selenium, etc. And then adjust your additives (organic) accordingly.

I love it when Sarah does the hammering, drilling, driving the tractor, etc. She's an inspiration to women who might otherwise be intimidated by using tools. I live in Canada and in most places you need to have a license to operate a forklift or order picker, etc. Hardware stores like Home Depot offer one day or weekend courses on everything from tiling to fence building. Usually they have a schedule posted and you just sign up. I believe they offer these courses free. Check out your local hardware store and ask... Good luck :)

Yep, you could make "self watering" containers by putting the holes several inches up from the bottom. I make mini- hugelkulturs by putting cut tree limbs and brush from around the property before I put the soil in. It retains moisture and feeds the plants.

Same. Here in Australian summers (and spring, and autumn, and hey, winter too, here in the northern end of Aus) pots dry out within hours. Also: invasive grass. It would grow straight through the bottom!! I make all my pots wicking pots, and if it already comes with holes, I add cut down milk containers or other waste plastic vessels in the bottom to create reservoirs. As long as three quarters of the top portion of soil is not sodden, roots are happy. Glad someone else pointed that out- not all conditions are the same!!

@bubbysbub4 жыл бұрын
@@jewelofwisdom8279 Here in my city in Australia, we have this thing called kerbside clean up. You can dump whatever needs chucking when it's your turn, and the council comes around and collects it. They do one neighbourhood at a time across our city, and we are ALWAYS in March, which is the end of the summer months, and there is inevitably one sitting on the verge somewhere around me that I can drag home. I can look up what suburb is about to be done if I am after something any other time of year, and just drive there. You can get great stuff- furniture, pots and pans, toys, exercise equipment, building supplies, anything that people don't want, it's there to be chucked, and it's open season for anyone that wants to pick something up. I suppose if you don't have anything like that, just advertise on your local gumtree-like site and offer to pick up and take them away for nothing- someone will take you up on that!! And if all else fails, a hard plastic kids pool at my local is only about $10- I just really prefer free, hahahaha.

Back in the day when I would plant in containers, I used coffee filters over the holes. And to further aid in drainage, I would use a layer of crushed soda cans on the bottom of the pot. This was also helpful in the larger containers cutting down on weight (easier to move if needed) and requiring less potting soil.
