It’s remarkable that post-Communism Europeans derided the character and an insult was to call someone a “Captain Kirk”. If you actually watched the show, not once was Kirk petty, initiated violence unnecessarily or more than necessary to bring peace and defend his crew or others, or belittled his enemies and was always fair and generous. Never was ever petty or vindictive. Pretty good role model all things considered, even if he was a bit of a slut at times 😅

@willharris76095 ай бұрын
@virginiaconnor8350 To me, the look was of discomfort and concern. Stiles was the face of the underlying resentment and suspicion of a growing number of the crew. The image of a commanding officer to the rest of the crew was in the balance. I think he saw it as a threat to his command. Kirk saw the look and quickly put an end to that threat.

Spock actually saves Stiles's life later in the episode, after which (we hope) he grows beyond his hatred of Vulcans. Kirk includes Stiles in discussions of how to respond to the Romulan incursion, and Spock actually agrees with Stiles's recommendations. They distinguish between the bigotry and the man.
@davidweihe60528 ай бұрын
His hatred is for Romulans, who appear to be an offshoot of the Vulcans, from the brief video intercept in the previous segment (not included in this short). Saw the episode in prime time, reruns, and James Blish’s adaptation.
@anonymoushuman83448 ай бұрын
Right. He hates Romulans and is bigoted toward Vulcans because he associates them with Romulans. Maybe you would argue that his bigotry toward Vulcans does not rise to the level of hatred. It's certainly dislike and suspicion rooted in racial prejudice.

that kind of thing makes the original Star Trek EPIC indeed

@@anonymoushuman8344I’d also assume that since the then-recent revelation of there being some kind of relationship between Vulcans and Romulans he’s a bit confused and reacting in the most basic emotional way possible.
