I give you a little tip from an old mechanic that's me. I've been doing this for a long time. I never mess with a feeler gauge all you need to do is get 3 x 5 index card and stick that up against the flywheel and let the magnet pull the coil up against the flywheel and tighten it down.

Absolutely a good tip. For these videos we like to show the exact manufacturers recommendations as much as possible but we always appreciate others sharing their real world experience and tips. Thanks!

When the listed 'fix' does not work, be sure to CLEAN the coil mounting surfaces ON THE ENGINE of oxidation, rust, and corrosion that will insulate the coil from its electrical ground to the engine. Also if the embedded magnets on the flywheel are 'rusted' ... also shine-up the magnet surfaces to 'bright'.

Eddie, I'm having a hard time finding the right part (coil ignition replacement) for a old 2003 craftsman Briggs and Stratton 625 190cc 917 series push mower? Can I just get a coil that fits the screw holes? I'm a woman and have to do everything myself. Can you help explain if I can interchange the old coil with another Briggs and Stratton coil?

I did the same test based on your diagnostic.. Now you've got me wondering if its the break or the seat safety that's messing with it... the search continues!

Can we guess what killed that old coil? All that mud over heated it. That is if the coil is really bad. I would of removed the old coil. CLEANED it up. Polished the mounting areas where the screws go. Needs to have a good ground to the block. Regap/install old coil. Test for spark WITHOUT the kill wire on. Easy right? U R welcome.

Did this exact procedure (also including shining up magnet on flywheel and the module armature) to no avail. Found out my B&S engine has an upper resistance limit on the ignition module of 5k. It was showing 5.13k on multimeter and producing only a dim spark on the inline tester. Switched it out for a new one, regapped it, turned the key, and tester immediately glowed brightly and engine started right up!

Maybe I missed it but since the ignition coil is in a fixed position due to 2 screws, is their a specific rotaional position for the flywheel? In other words is it important to "line up" the flywheel with say the, "on center point" of the ignition coil?
@brandonhebert54855 ай бұрын
Just rotate the flywheel until the coil is against the magnets of the flywheel. There are not magnets all the way around, just in one small area.

As the engine spins around sends spark to the piston to burn the gas so it'll stay idling its kinda like a piece of the brain to the engine Or is like a power supply to a computer you know without that it ain't gonna work

You could hook a switch to it Or splice it into one of the wires to the ignition so once you turn the key to off the engine shuts off

@@jimthomas1989 Dude are you ready for a nut scratcher WTF story? I do Marine repair for a living and also restore Muscle cars. I got a Briggs NOS coil off of ebay. Before I installed the coil I took my drill and a wire wheel and cleaned the rust off the flywheel ! It is spotless no rust the magnetic part is spotless no rust . I installed the NOS Brigs coil set the gap with packaging from the coil about the thickness of a business card. all wiring all connections for the coil have been flushed cleaned and no rust or dirt. I took a ohm meter and check my ground block for the wire that kills the ignition and it was good was not grounded out. I bought a brand new plug for it. I left out the plug hooked a spark plug tester on the coil wire gave her a nice pull I GOT SPARK O COOL! I installed the plug hook up the coil wire hit the primer bulb got fuel in the system and gave her a pull no no pop no fart no nothing ! I pull the spark plug hook a ground to it to the engine and gave her a hard pull dead as a door nail no spark. Ok well maybe the key way is off for the fly wheel its cracked I order a package of key ways pull the fly wheel not broke but off set a little I though ok this is it I cleaned all of the fly wheel inside and out ! Installed the new aluminum key way tighten the flywheel nut hooked up the spark tester wow great spark installed the plug primed it and cranked it over no pop no fart no nothing deader than a door nail checked the spark again with plug on DEAD NO SPARK When down got another brand new plug put that on same thing passes spark test with no load as soon as I put on a plug to it DEAD NO SPARK! I ordered another mag off of Ebay and ordered the wrong one it was for another engine my mistake. I went down to the parts house took my engine cover down and he ordered the correct coil for it with a life time warranty ! Brought it home and this time I took and adjusted the kill point linkage from the mounting pad for the wire for the coil I made sure the metal tab that kills the engine was far away and not touching . This time I installed the coil to Manufactuers specs the gap is 0.010 to 0.012 I got a feeler gauge and set it rigt on the nats ass 0.10 rotated the fly wheel and it was not touching and I had good gap on both sides of the coil . Hooked up the spark plug tester I had nice bright spark oh cool slap the second new plug in hook up the wire no pop no fart I even sprayed carb cleaner in the cylinder nothing ! Pulled the second brand new plug hooked a ground wire on it pull the engine over very fast and deader than a door nail . I took tne new coil off took the mower out and parked it by the trash trailer I am done dude . Work on my fair share of briggs and small gas engines this one kicked my right in the nuts no mater what I did and the sad thing its got goo compression I dotted my I s and crossed my T s so many time I ran out of ink in my pen to cross them out

My coil is damaged it looks bad. I gave that engine away and bought a $40.00 twin cylinder craftsman briggs engine 22 hp and am slowly working on it now its greasy dirty did see someone's been in the ohv covers so may have to go over those later on there's no sense into them using rtv sealer when i know they still sale those ones ohv cover gaskets so why the red sealer now i may have to scrape all that shit off. The 22 hp hasn't ran in a long time from looking at the spark plugs so am gonna take the engine shroud off and the carburetor go ahead and clean that up i had the engine sideways and upside down so its got oil dripping out places it shouldn't be thats normal though from how i was working on it its nothing big engine turns over good with plugs in and out good compression. Now i just wonder what mowers has the old craftsman briggs 22 hp on them

Cool, but you didn't really ever actually test the coil itself.. like for example with a multimeter perhaps?

Yes, how do you test the coil itself? Or is it a matter of ruling everything else out? (I am working on a Troy-bilt push lawn mower.)

@@Messyandrelaxed There are other videos that show it, but it's something like testing the resistance between the high tension wire lead (where the spark plug attaches) and ground ie the coil. Look for some other videos

Why does nearly everyone replace the plug first? It's the cheapest repair that will never work for you. How many times have you found a real dead plug? Maybe 1 in 40. Now cleaning said plug, yes I agree. That plug was perfect. Main jet is a little rich. See the base ring and how black it is? She is running good for a mower engine.

You have never dealt with. British motorcycles or any well used engine. A fouled plug is one of the most common problems with misfires in all types of engines
@rickjames69487 ай бұрын
You need to learn how to use your spark tester guy. Open the test gap up more. You nearly have a dead short. Also that tester will tell you more that just oh yeah I see spark. The more you open the gap the more load is on the coil. You need to load test the coil at 0.25" wide gap. Should throw spark that far. If not your coil is weak. Easy right? No problem.
