The cool thing about those classic four pin relays is the way they fit into their home two different ways, upside down or right side up. The clever design allows them to work perfectly fine, either way. Those four pin relays are protected from accidental wrong insertion by always having the load side power diagonally across from the load side ground, and the same for the control pair. So, you can safely assume that a four pin rectangular relay will have diagonally opposing partners, although you don't know which is which. In those specific relays, that makes it impossible to accidentally jump load power to computer ground if you avoid any jumping that is not diagonal. And it makes tools like your AES tool work fine across many different platforms.

So watching this video brings back memories for me being in class at Toyota and Mercedes Benz there are few teachers that can bring it down to an easy understanding as you do from the stand point of being a newbie and so young. There was 1 in Toyota and 2 in Mercedes that had that ability. Being taught by my shop foreman at Toyota he gave me the insight and ability to ask the questions in class to get things started, there were times that the class was for better words not going anywhere and I would ask the teacher a question i already knew the answer to because I fixed at the dealership already and they had to research for the answer calling sometimes the engineers to find the fix. Hey if you are teaching you should know how to come up with the conclusions I did sometimes spending hours to trace it out pulling interiors apart to find said bad crimp connection. These were on brand newish cars too. Later on they would find a DTB for said problem back in the day when computers were not used as they are today. Retired and love watching your videos and I can say some of the things you teach gave me better ways to diag then before, you put a different spin on it and we look at the problems differently and come to the conclusion and fix. Rest in peace Flip many of my friends to are doing the wrench turning in the afterlife or just looking down at us laughing from a better place.

Another excellent teaching video. I'm glad you expounded on the need to do final testing on the starter itself, even though your testing up top pointed to the starter motor. The work flow of professional shops is to make the diagnosis, get approval, order parts, and a few days later get it all done with parts in hand. The tech who does the work may not even be the guy who made the diagnosis, and they could easily lean into it and do what was planned with no final testing at all. Disappointingly, we see that here on KZbin as well.

Awesome video. I haven't used the 12v incandescent tester, but I get an audible clicking when the ignition is turned to start with the panel lights flickering. No corrosion on studs/nuts/eyelit. Did the screwdriver trick and heard a "whirl" each time where I'm thinking it is the clutch that gave out. No crank each time, however watching this video I think I needed ignition key to be on run while I did that?

That's a fancy way I'd just swap the starter relay for the one that sits Wright next to the one your working on the one I seen on the left is the relay for the 4 ways if u look both relays are exactly the same so if u switch them it starts or the the 4 ways don't work after u switch them then it's a bad relay always check your fuse boxes for relays like the one in question most manufacturers youse the same throughput the vehicle its 50/50 if u find one you don't need to do anything elts just get a new one and it's fixed nice video 😉

I recently had a 73 ford truck that would not crank, but the headlights did not dim. Checked (attempted) cranking voltage with a voltmeter and was less than 10v.on the battery terminals - not enough to engage the solenoid. I suspect a shorted cell inside the Optima battery which is a potentially dangerous situation. Battery voltage was 12.3v with no load.

HEY SD, Paul, for the scan tools that you use and if they show the total number of modules once the full scan is complete, can you please show this in all future videos. In this case, at timestamp 0:40, there are 12 modules listed at the top of the scan tool shot, this way if we have this vehicle with less than 12, we can figure out what is missing as not all scan tools show a module that has no comm and we don't memorize these bits of info but a few of us do take notes of many YT videos. I also have noticed that YT is showing these CHAPTERS just above this comment section, it seems that you, the content provider are giving the timestamps so that is you or your son taking even more of your time to improve on your processes. Thanks for this special dedication video to a student and friend of yours.

@scannerdanner man can you please help me with my 2000 sls Seville, no crank at all, I had disconnected the positive cable from the batt overnight and next morning when I re connected it it didn't respond at all to cranking the key , I checked starter it's good , brand new battery , and also I can get it to start by manually bypassing the starter relay but 3 seconds after it fires up it cuts engine power. And when I first connect the cables back to battery, with key turned to on, the security light doesn't illuminate. It doesn't light up even after trying to bypass starter relay and the engine cuts itself off, it only illuminates and stays on after I attempt to crank the car from the inside with the key. . Please help me any advice is appreciated
