All this brings back memories of when I was a kid with a Schwinn stingray, and I experimented with longer pedal crankshafts from 24", 26", and 27" wheel bikes in my 20" wheel bike. The 10 speed crank would hit the ground if you pedaled while turning, but the torque was amazing....but it was very limiting on how fast you could pedal. I liked the 24" bike crank the best and geared up my sprocket slightly. We could get the parts at swap meets and scrap yards, lol, some things in my life stay the same. Very interesting info. Thanks for sharing!

Hello again Ben, you always have such real world examples to enhance your point. I had the same problem with a 428CJ Mach 1 as that 440 Roadrunner with traction loss . It delivered huge torque but within a limited rpm range. I never won a race while going guardrail to guardrail with the tires roasting. Having a wider rpm range to deliver power in would have allowed me to lessen the initial shock upon leaving. 🏁
@benalamedaracing27659 ай бұрын
@@danielwilson6665, you had that experience as well with a limited big block rpm range. They are real awesome if it had slicks on the streets! lol I remember street racing a big block Chevelle and I would leave him out the gate by 1.5 cars while he was spinning, and he could not catch me all the way to the finish line! After that we ended up with a brawl on the streets because they did not want to pay up! lol
@danielwilson66659 ай бұрын
@@benalamedaracing2765 Ben it’s an interesting coincidence that while I was making my comment, I was thinking about how a set of slicks would have made all the difference. Then in your comment, you stated exactly what I was thinking ! How cool is that ? Despite how we grew up on different sides of the country, our thrill of victory and the brawls of defeat are exactly the same. I think we would have been the guys to beat on that street or strip 🏁

Hi Ben, Just curious - have you ever built a 10.297" deck height Ford? AKA the Ford 400. I've often thought of building a tall deck "Cleveland" 434 just to be different. :) But have always stuck with Windsor's and Cleveland's due to the cost of custom cranks, rods and pistons for the 400.
@benalamedaracing27659 ай бұрын
I have done 400's and they will make good torque with added crank stroke and long rods! Issue is you need to fill that displacement with a good cylinder head and manifold choice is close to nothing! Spacers on the manifold to head will fix these and if you do, the Holley Strip Dominator manifold has ample ports capable of giving you airflow to the cylinder heads!

Today, guys are building 900+ci engines and twisting them just as high as any "small block" engines. Pro Stock use 500ci and spin them 9000+. There is no replacement for displacement. I think it should be rephrased to: "There is no replacement for cash money!" The old saying has always been: "Q: How much does it cost? A: Well, how fast do you want to go?" Now, for us guys with pocket lint for money, I think it all depends on your intended goals, and what you're trying to accomplish. If all you're trying to do is run 10's or 9's or even in the 8's N/A, nothing really matters with all the tech we have available today. A guy with a 350ci can run just as fast as a guy with a 498ci, if all you're trying to do is get into the 10-8 second range (1/4 mile). You might even be further ahead going small, because a small engine isn't going to weigh as much, and 100-150lbs in weight savings means a lot in that performance range! But, if you are simply looking for maximum power, there is no replacement for displacement (money)! Period.
@benalamedaracing27659 ай бұрын
There is a lot of truth in what you posted and may I add, NHRA 500cid Pro-Stocks have small strokes and super big bore to end up at 500 cid limit.

I'm going to say the bigger bore will make quite a bit more power because it unshrouds the valves and will rev like a monster. What say you Ben?

I have built many such as you suggested. On a light car the 3.25 has the edge and when the car is a little heavier the 3.4 will have an advantage. Purely speaking of power the 3.25 will be up on the hp with a higher rpm potential. I have gone faster with the 3.25...
