Here in ireland I'm not allowed to keep cattle as I've no sheds to winter. Disagreed with my inspector as the breeds of interest to me are dexter or galloway. Both prefer to be outside and are hardy enough. But there you go

Personally, I'd recommend Dexter. Nice temperaments, perfect size for handling, good moms, very hardy, plenty of milk, and if you market the meat privately the cuts are really nice size and tender. My friend, in her 80's had them, and she could walk out into the field and hand milk the cows they were so gentle.

I had a small herd of Sussex to breed my own bulls to cross over some of the herd of native cattle, they thrived on poor tropical forage with only a mineral lick, another plus is, they were the best British breed for walking long distances while grazing, they always graded well with good marbeling and tenderness.

Aren't there rare native beefers? In the Netherlands there are grants for breeding rare natives, I believe. It's not much but it helps with the feeding costs.

I know someone who bought a lawnmower from Lidl, uses it to mow his garden lawn and for under electric fences. He claimed the VAT back on it as he said he’s using it for farming 😂

My vote is for Aberdeen Angus and shorthorn. Only because that’s what I have and everyone will recommend what they have. But they’re hardy as! We don’t winter most outside because we’re lucky enough to have the inside space and don’t want to wreck the fields but sometimes a few stay out and they do just as well. We never feed them concentrates and we do fine at market. 30 month olds last averaged 1800 odd 😊

I think Aberdeen Angus will be a good idea for you Chris we breed pedigree limos and Angus and the Angus fatten up completely off grass but The limis to have corn so in long run Angus are quit cheap beast Thanks Frank

Good video we just buy in dairy cross cattle usually Angus or Hereford cross but if I was going to keep sucklers along with the sheep I think I would choose a native breed like Angus

We do exactly the same when fencing our ewes and lambs. Simple push mower. Mow to side of stakes and just move them over few inches👍

Thinking of getting some belted Galloways for my sheep farm in NY. Smaller frame, cold hardiness similar to highlander but without the horns, quality meat but slower growth. You might get less at sales but maybe put less into it?

Definitely consider breeds that have the genetics to produce and finish on grass alone. I would shy away from the larger breeds where the cows weigh 550 to 600 kg, they require too much energy for themselves. Select a breed where mature cows are in the 450 to 475 kg range. Also, buy from a source that is rearing cattle the same way you want to, grass fed. Those cattle likely have the genetics to excell for you. Good luck!

We calve out 25 cows and grass finish everything on our farm(I also age/cut/wrap/direct market). A 900-1000 always works best for us. We us a cross of small framed angus on galloway cows giving us a small framed easy finishing animal easy on the eyes. We looked at sussex 30 years when we started but here in nova scotia at least they were impossible to find. We get a lot of rain 60+inches per year and a real winter: sometimes -15 Celsius( we get an arctic jet stream- you seem to get a breeze from the south of France. Anyhou the smaller cows do a lot less damage to fields in wet weather and breed back easier. They are outside cows calving in may on green grass. kevin. PS my babies are 25 and I'm still trying to catch up on lost sleep.

I dont know how expensive they are but what about Red Devon cattle? They have a high grass to meat conversion, and their meat is quite lean. Your Red Suffolk is very nice.

choose a breed or cross breed that works for your system - so for me it would need to be a purebreed of what you already have in the paddock as they suit the enviroment and your grass fed system - here in NZ we are pretty much grass fed with some fodder beet and hay over the winter - the blonde Highland with the poo band on her tail, that needs to be removed before the bottom of her tail falls off and you need a vet note to sent her off farm

Sussex are amazing literally get fat off of nothing. they need very little input and are generally sweet natured and easy to work with as well as looking stunning. the meat is good on a Sussex too and we always make over a £1000 with our Sussex steers at Hailsham.

That is what we need, meat from grass. Much healthier meat and good for the planet .The Sussex sounds like support for a native minority breed. At the end of the day, the Continentals are high input to achieve their potential.I used to run the fence with a Mountfield lawn mower to clear the fences.

If you're not set on purebred cattle and want to stay native/grass reared, it might pay to consider a hereford angus cross both great converters of grass to beef and by crossing you get the benefits of hybrid vigor. This particular cross is really popular worldwide and is known by the yanks as black baldies. All the natives have their selling points, but with angus and Hereford there is a premium at market as long as you put them to a registered sire. (Also a scheme for shorthorn with i think morrisons but not as wide spread.) Good luck mate and great news about young farmer to be👍

Have you considered Dexters? I follow another British farmer on here called Farmer P and he's a small scale farmer that breeds and rears Dexter cattle purely on just grass for most of the year, and switches to haylage and hay during the winter. He sells the meat himself as beef packs in boxes that people can order and buy from him. They're small cattle so you could probably keep quite a few and they seem to be low maintence and have good temperaments. Maybe reach out to him and see if he can give you any advice? if i was a poor man which i am. i would sell the shaggy cows and replace them with the best beef heifers i could afford, then put them all with a quality bull, and start keeping the heifers.. your jurseys heifer looks like a nice beef heifer, breed her. she should really feed a calve as well.. and congrats on the baby.. daddy day care will be interesting..

Finance Partner with a baby boomer who has cash in the bank. Offer them a better return than the bank. Find a property that needs work, improve it using your skills. So the investor/ partner gets a higher interest rate than the bank and you get the tax free capital improvement. If they are community minded, they may get satisfaction in assisting the next generation.
