Sophie(Sansa) and Maise(Arya) don’t get enough credit for the scene. Ned’s death was all that more haunting was hearing his daughters screams in the background and then the SILENCE.

When maesters finish their studies, they give up their family names. In this case, Aemon Targaryen became Maester Aemon. He became a maester at 19, and joined the Night's Watch at 23. He's about 100 in the series, so he's been without the Targaryen name for 80 years now. Anyone who ever knew him as Aemon Targaryen is long since dead.

4:11 "He was stabbed in the back and you were part of it" Varys was not part of Ned's capture. He's reminding Ned that his daughters are in great danger and will be in greater danger if Ned doesn't recant the truth and swear fealty to Joffery. With Robb marching South, the girls (Sansa, at least) are effectively prisoners of war and would have no adults looking out for their wellbeing if Ned is executed.

As I recall, when the show first aired, HBO was flooded with angry messages/emails threatening to cancel subscriptions. The bald guy's name is Varys, not Vargys.... and if you look back at all of his scenes with Ned, you'll see that he took a great risk by passing along crucial information to Ned that he didn't have to. The problem was that Ned was too honorable to ever compromise his values, so couldn't play "the Game". Like Cersei said, "When you play the Game of Thrones", you either win or lose, there's no middle ground".

Your tangent on videogames is exactly why I loved Witcher 3. You can make choices that feel morally good, but the results can be horrible, and vice versa. It was refreshing to play a game where choices mattered and had weight and consequences in the story that were logical but often not what was expected. Speeches like that are what made this show amazing (in the good days).

The game of thrones is about the pursuit for power in Westeros. Ned lost the game because he didn’t place the same value on power as other houses did. And he said what he did about Sansa to save her life, not to manipulate Ned. He knew if Ned didn't confess they would kill Sansa, or even worse give her to Joffery as his personal plaything to torture and abuse. What a horrible man that Varys is to want to prevent that.

@@jameskinstle6874 So what? Let her be as far off base as she can be for now. She will probably catch on to his good qualities in her own time. You also contradict yourself. Right after you say “Varys has been loyal to the Crown this entire time,” you go in to then say that "The ONLY one he was two-faced towards at all at this point was the Crown.” So with is it? Has he been loyal to the Crown, or two-faced towards the Crown? the truth is, Varys couldn’t give two shits about the Crown. In his own words, her serves "the Realm" (not the Crown), "because someone has to.” And you are spoiling the show.
