In the 1960s the community itself wanted to be called "black", instead of negro or colored.
@vinceinhouston-016 ай бұрын
Yes. "Black is beautiful" was a huge movement when I was little in the '70s. James Brown had the hit, I'm Black and I'm Proud. Why? It was a backlash against the segregational term "colored." During segregation, there were all the signs for water fountains, restrooms and virtually everything indicating "white" and "colored" people. It was a hateful practice so the term associated with it was understandably seen as being a hateful term. Adopting a different term that hadn't been used during that time is understandable. Someone at some point decided later that the correct term was African American. However, there were several labels that have been tried at different times; People of Color and Afro-Americans are two names that were used. Everybody is supposed to be using their "correct" label for everybody Italian-American, Irish-American. I remember being told by an older black man when I was a teen, that I should never call black people African-Americans unless they are from Africa and were now naturalized citizens. Who was I to argue with him?
@btorr29456 ай бұрын
People change, language changes. Funny how people can make big deals out of things. Had the big deal awhile back between Native American and Indians. Ojibwa’s in general prefer Indian. Anything can be offensive. Depends on how it is said and how it is perceived.
@vinceinhouston-016 ай бұрын
@@btorr2945 Yes, exactly. It all depends on... anything really. I can see both sides of things. Take the Washington Redskins hoopla. They bore that name for 80 years and I remember watching a TV series that had an American Indian character who repeatedly said that they were the "best damn team" in the episode. I know the logo of the Indian chief that replaced the original R in the circle was created by a leader of the Blackfeet Indian tribe. He said ge used traditional paint patterns and wanted to have the mascot represent an accurate rendering. In 2003, just before he passed he had said he was glad that they kept it when another Indian group was offended by it. After his death, charges that he never actually had anything to do with the creation of the logo were leveled, but his son maintained that it was indeed his fathers creation. Those protests to remove the head called it racist, despite the origins. Eventually, the outcry to outright remove the logo and the name won out. Several American Indian groups got together to try and reinstate the name last year as a matter of pride. I suppose there is always someone that will be and someone that won't be bothered by something. There will also be people that go out of their way to not offend and to offend. It was Marilyn Manson that bemoaned the fact that he just wasn't born with enough middle fingers.

Skip to the end, if you like... The world "negro" is Portuguese for "black." The Portuguese coasted Africa in an attempt to avoid sailing the Mediterranean Sea which was completely controlled by Muslim corsairs who would seize the ships, enslave the crews and sell the merchandise. Avoiding them was good business. Coasting the continent of Africa while looking for the Far East and its exotic products, they would sail into a river for fresh water and food. When they reached what is now the Rio Negro, the native people looking back at them were black. They did not understand the language of these people, so they called the people "negro," as a description, named the river to match and continued their journey. When I was a child, "negro" was considered a polite term, at least among middle class whites. In any case, it was preferable to "the n-word" which was *_such_* a nasty word, neither my parents nor anyone they invited to our home uttered it my hearing or that of my older sisters. "Negro" is the word I remember Martin Luther King Jr using most often during the times he appeared on the news. He also used the term "colored," if I recall correctly. Using either, today, would have me in trouble fairly quickly. "Blacks" became the preferred term for a time and was fairly widely adopted. However, there was resistance to being labeled simply as a color. Then came the Frredom Riders, the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act and a good deal of societal upset due to numerous causes. Another word was sought by some who wanted leadership roles. "Afro-American," "African-American" and a couple others were tried before everyone settled on "African-American." For a while, anyway, that was the state of things. It appears the situation is in flux, again, as "African-American" is something of a mouthful and Charlize Theron and Elon Musk are confusing the issue of "African-American"-ness. The grandchildren of those who championed that term are adults, now, and some are apparently looking for a new word to use. Whatever is decided upon and accepted by that community will be fine. I understand the resistance to being reduced to a color as I and many others have long chafed at being reduced to "white." I much prefer to simply be "American" and to think of everyone I see here as the same. Colors are OK with me for including in descriptions but not for labels.

Our Country is a Republic, NOT a Democracy form of government. Our voting style is a Democracy, but our Country is Republic. That's why our government is divided into 3 parts. While I hold Republican views on most things, I am reluctant to vote for Trump because he portrays himself as a limited fool and if he is not, I'd like him to drop some hints that he is capable of managing complex issues. He's so taken up with getting the vote of the average Joe (something he doesn't really need to worry about: the Joes are as good as taken already) that I don't see any attempt to make an impression on the less simple-minded voter whose concerns go beyond religiously-driven abortion issue or turning everything into a God vs Satan opposition. How about some non-religious explanation on the stance the party takes? To me, a cornerstone to this election is the Ukrainian issue and I would like to know if Trump's action plan holds real promise to end Russia's occupation without sacrificing Ukrainian territory. Whoever is going to play along with the Russian totalitarism and pretend it's ok, doesn't deserve to be the leader of the freee world. For many decades the US political life has been rolling downhill, downgrading to the level of the least common denominator instead of actually educating the voter on the issues. This is bound to backfire soon enough. A democracy is more and more just a word without content. This is appalling and dangerous, as well as shameful.

@charlesmorris64767 ай бұрын
Are you saying we should forget where we came from?Americans are refugees basically from white European ancestry and are the ones that founded and established this country after they decimated and annihilated the native inhabitants because of territory and a conflict of interests which is ironic as America forcefully took away the freedoms of Native Americans to establish what they call the land of the free. As time went on other racial groups were added as white Western Europeans expanded and took ownership because of superior technology and tactics over the indigenous peoples. Each racial group has its own ethnic customs and traditions. That’s what makes America great, right! They are free to practice the religion of their choice and their individual cultures as long as they are not harmful to the physical well-being of others. Is recognizing your Irish heritage and traditions harmful to others, of course not, is being Hungarian culturally harmful to others of course not, it’s only harmful when those in power force their will and agenda on the masses and that is when America stops being America and is no longer great. If your culture inculcates violence or hostility against the existence of other cultures and races, then it is harmful and dangerous.

@gl29966 ай бұрын
Sorry, but no. Party affiliation matters a great deal in Washington D.C.. Parties have platforms for a reason - their members will often vote party line, and are strongly encouraged, even strong-armed, to do so. Also, candidates receive funding from their parties in order to support their campaigns, but only if they demonstrate party and ideological loyalty. What that means is that politicians who can afford to get elected are almost certainly already in the fold. Finally, politicians from both parties routinely lie in order to get elected. Party and party platforms are often clearer indicators of how a politician will vote.

There is a great saying something like "If you are young and you're not a Democrat you don't have a heart. But if you're old and you're not a republican then you haven't learned anything." I'll always remember that.

I think that terms like 'Whites' and 'Blacks' are just conversational time savers. Also, you're so caught up on this you're missing the factual, historical information.

She is a historian and it does not matter what party she is, they do not say it for any wrong reason it's just white's and black's we know we are all people. You and I as a white were never told this in school it was hidden from us until these people with degrees dug into the past and found the real truth. We say blacks when we try to talk about a certain race and it's the Blacks that came up with this WORD that is way better than what they were called many years ago.

Please do some reaction video on Thomas Sowell. He grew up in 1930's Harlem as the black child of a single mom, yet went to Harvard and became a world famous economist. He completely shreds Democrats and their socialist policies that disproportionately harm women and minorities. You might also like Nick Freitas' "Making the Argument" podcasts
