The PGMOL rule is that a headbutt is punishable by a RED card. Any other head-to-head contact is deemed accidental, and a drop-ball should ensue once both players are checked for concussion. Those are the PGMOL rules. The referee did not consider it a headbutt, as he did not issue a red card. There was no drop ball. The referee awarded a penalty - and there is no precedence for it.

Saliba sees where Brighton attacker is and still decides to fling his forehead after closing his eyes straight into the balls path regardless of what danger he causes his opponent - taking the man while hoping for the best - strongest bone, forehead, straight into most vulnerable area, attackers temple. If its the leg going straight into the player, it doesn't matter if player gets a glancing touch on the ball, still careless even possibly reckless (which is a yellow). Untimely apology by the FA as it is reasonable this could very well be a good call, even a yellow. The laws use terms such that describe careless, reckless, and excessive force/brutality all concerning damage or avoidable risk of damaging the opponent. frame by frame Brighton player can't see Saliba but saliba turns and we can see him look straight at Pedro's head - then, disregards the risk to the opponents most vulnerable area of his body. Read law 12 fouls and misconduct

Talking over Martin Keown anytime he tries to make a point is a big part of this debate. This is all odd that refs took 3 secs on a play all pundits are talking about. This underscores what some are saying about officiating. One doesn't need to be an Arsenal fan here. When a Rice got sent off for being kicked by an opponent, it was called the letter of the law as the ball hit Rice from behind in the process. In the same game, Pedro kicked the ball half way through the pitch and didn't get cautioned. Since then, this alleged letter of the law has quietly fazed out and we see players kicking the ball every game. And this Brighton penalty is actually ridiculous. Both Pedro and Saliba went to head the ball both had contact with the ball before their accidental head clash. But Pedro rolled on the floor as if he was hit by a hammer while Saliba innocently looked to defend his penalty area. In this incident, nobody was headbutted. I am sure Howard Web will come up with ridiculous justification as to why the penalty was given and will go unchallenged as usual; but real football fans know no such penalty will be given in the premier league in the future.

Definitely it's not a penalty for me. It was an accidentally clashed of heads. Clearly both players were aiming at the ball. A real headbutt incident could go back when Zidane wiped out Materazzi with his head in the 2006 world cup final, by the way Materrazzi made a meal out of it. Zidane had no intention of hitting the ball with his head. That's a clear foul and it's a violent conduct. Do you expect the defender to raise his leg to such height in order to make defensive action instead of his head? You would say that's a too high tackle, wouldn't you? You need to apply the common sense to judge in this situation.

He’s gone for the ball? What happens if a defender, in his box, attempts to clear the ball, with his foot but the opposition player gets to the ball 1st and the defender, unaware of the other player closing in on him, then kicks the opposing player? It’s not a high foot or a dangerous play. Is it a foul in the box? Is it then a penalty? If a defender makes contact with an opponent inside the box is it a foul. Suck it up man. Yes, The officiating is poor because refs are no longer reffing the game but relying on technology to clean up their messes. I see players fall in their box, lose the ball to their opponent and then grab hold of the ball and no penalty is called. I see players making MMA challenges on opponents in their box and no penalty. I've never seen a pen ike that b4. Usually because both players react and go down or show they're hurt as a result of accidental clash of heads. Saliba showed no ill effects at all, probably led to ref thinking it was aggressive headbutt on his part... but how Var did not see Saliba got ball and ask Anthony Taylor to have a look at it on monitor is typical of refereeing mediocrity in England. Var officials likely partied with Cootes the night before If Dermot Gallagher thought Saliba didn't get ball amd so simply nutted Pedro why didn't he also then send him off? Not even a booking? The refs and the PGMOL STINK and at this point I believe are corrupt. They can't be this incompetent... Anthony Taylor just wanted his moment and giving the pen was enough for him. No real attempt to properly apply rules as they should be. As for the VAR, nothing to say about fact Saliba got ball nor the fact that Taylor failed to book Saliba or send him off for violent conduct. But if they did that, they know Arsenal would surely appeal, the injustice of the decision would become clear and Webb would be giving his billionth apology

I don't think Taylor saw Saliba's touch of the ball. If he had it wouldn't have been given. This incident was a failure of VAR. They should have told Taylor there was a touch and asked if he wants a second look.

It's idiotic to say Taylor is biased against Arsenal, he's completely incompetent but he let them get away with 30 full minutes of the most extreme time wasting I have ever seen, terrible decisions are made in almost every game, people are saying the De Ligt handball shouldn't have been given, he was making the air Jordan silhouette for no reason, the real incompetence is that the ref didn't award the penalty himself (I'm a Man U fan), Ait Nouri last night did a very similar thing and no penalty awarded, the ref's in this league are shocking and inconsistent and the var is useless when you put the same incompetence/inconsistent refs in charge of that.
@adeyemiadeleye9823Күн бұрын
Football is a contact game and every defender has the right to defend his goal area and go for the ball. That’s exactly was Saliba did. The officials inconsistency is the issue. They penalized Arsenal for things and will never do the same to other teams.
@dan7972-k9mКүн бұрын
You won’t see another penalty like that given in the next 5 years, nor will you see any player red carded for delaying a restart. The PGMOL apply their rules and justifications when they feel like it..
@SakebR200912 сағат бұрын
The comparison to the West Ham penalty is stupid. Gabriel was punched in the head because fabianski missed the ball. Saliba gets the ball. These two clowns are just gaslighting.

Coming from an Arsenal fan, if we had enough juice at the front, we wouldn't be so desperate for decisions to go our way. If we were blowing teams away, these decisions wouldn't matter. We didn't do enough to beat Brighton. Besides, over the course of a season, these decisions even themselves out. If we don't win the league, it won't be because decisions went against us. It will be because we didn't do enough to win it.
@truthhurts1006Күн бұрын
I disagree, wrong decisions may be the reason we don't win the league. If that penalty ain't given we win the game. You can't sat that's not the reason when you know that goals can change games.

You have never seen in the history of football this type of incident being given as a penalty because it has never been deemed to be worthy of being given as a penalty. It’s unfortunate that the two so called best referees are the worst referees in many instances. There is always an intent in their decision when it comes to some clubs, particularly Arsenal. So many pundits were disgusted by this decisions except those who suffered by Arsenal’s brilliance.

Ball before player. No debate just facts. If a defender touches the ball in the slightest way possible with his toe VAR watch it over and over, if there is a toe on the ball. It's always in the defenders favour. Should be pens on most corners now then, when two players jump for the ball only one wins it, the other headbuts the player. That will be clash of heads. Yet this wasn't because it was slower and Saliba didn't throw himself on the floor

They only seem to do the good cop bad cop routine when they have Martin Keown on ..they ask for his opinion based on his Premier League experience and as he starts to reply one or other interrupt and when he trys to answer that they fire another question. It's deliberate as they both smirk like a couple overgrown grammar school boys. It's obvious they show no respect for Arsenal or former players. They never do that with people like Danny Murphy , Troy Deeney etc.

Both players go for the ball and both of them touch the ball before hitting each other. If that’s a foul, then it’s a foul on both saliba and Pedro because Pedro hit Saliba just as much as Saliba hit Pedro. So it shouldn’t be a penalty. Both have a right to get the ball and that’s definitely not a headbutt.

Martin is right. How many times have we seen an attacking player head an incoming ball and the defender tries to head the same ball but doesn't touch it and clashes with the attackers head? Watch the replays from all the angles. It's incredibly clear that the ball comes off Pedro's head first then Saliba head butts him. It may have been accidental but it doesn't matter, he still head butts him. Any where else on the pitch it's a free kick. Simple decision for the ref to give a pen.

No, Arteta did have reason to complain about the Rice one, that was never a 2nd yellow. Because there were 200 time wasting incidents from that moment to the present, there were punished at most 5% of them and never with 2nd yellow except the Trossard one, another Arsenal player, Trossard did deserve it to be fair but Rice didn't, especially whole his opponent there coming straight out of a hack and slash game, hacking his feet away. That's just a bad joke.
