Just win. Simply. A trend I noticed, when you play GM's or they give you free game...is that they keep it simple in idea. Calculate SOME...then follow a SIMPLE idea. As you pointed out, in the HEAT of it, you were able to Calculate his entire master plan of running the king around you so he can get your pawns...so then you could counter by doing whatever and locking up his pawns and all that... When again as you noted...you could've just took with the bishop. 🤷🏿‍♂️ Simple. Your CALCULATION is already GM level. You've been right and well studied a majority of the time...just make the simple play. Tends to be effective more often than not. You dont have to masterplan and scheme it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. They are doing the same for you and can recognize when you're winning...so OPERATE IN THAT. You got this. GM is on the way. Life goes on. It's as Hikaru said, you gotta get out of your own way frfr. Just play chess. Beat mf's you're supposed to beat. Beat mf's that aren't working as hard. Out of everyone...EVERYONE in the chess world is waiting for you/wanting you to succeed in this. Prove us RIGHT. We KNOW you're a GM...just gotta go through the formalities. Lets get it.

GM's don't use calculation the way Levy describes. They don't choose moves based on calculation (some do, but they get much weaker as they age, for example, Shirov). Most GMs choose moves based on targeting and eliminating weaknesses and only then calculate. Levy may actually be doing this and not telling us, but it seems from his descriptions that he calculates based on his intuition (like Shirov) rather than evaluating the position to know what he should calculate (like Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, and Carlsen). He calculates way too much, like most of us amateurs do. We do this because we don't understand the right strategy in most of our positions, so it's all we can do. But we will never become a GM doing that. I think Levy knows that too, so I am optimistic about his GM chances.

@@yzfool6639Levy seems to have a good idea of what he's trying to do in the game, it's just that he's having to explain to us all the reasons why his ideas do or don't work and it's the sort of thing that for a good player is much quicker to understand than to explain it to a bunch of noobs watching KZbin!
@thuroria7631

17:25 "I spent fifteen minutes and this move didn't even cross my mind" Yeah, that's the problem with focusing on deep calculations of concrete lines when there are no forcing plays, rather than just taking it one move at a time. For most people, engines analyze insane sequences of concrete lines but actually, the vast majority of the time what drives an engine's play is the immediate position. When you look at the lines, you oftentimes go "Oh, that's just a natural simple improving move that doesn't force anything." Engines also don't make plans, which I feel is another weakness of humans. They can immediately re-evaluate a situation and completely abandon the motivations that went into the previous move, not suffering from sunk cost fallacy.

You’re great man. The sign of a true GM isn’t always hitting the center of the target, but also making improvements in handling games like this. To me, bro, you are already GM. You handled this loss like a true professional and much better than you used to, I’m sure you’ll agree. Hikaru even said that your emotions are one of the biggest hurdles- so there you have it :) I’m so glad we got to see that- even though you didn’t win this game. Well done and we are all rooting for you whether you win or lose. You’re an absolute joy to watch. Nothing beats Magnus’ mouse-slip where he gave the queen to Hikaru though :p

Great attitude about the loss! There’s so much more to a game than just the final result, as your analysis demonstrates. So much to learn about 1) the game of chess, 2) thought process bullseyes and misses, 3) move (re)orders, etc. One thing you seem to have in the bag is time management.

Inasmuch as I'd love to see Levi a GM, it will never happen. Levi is missing a few things: 1. the ability to concentrate for the whole game, 2. lack of killing instinct, and 3. overthinking, and thus making too many slow rational" decisions which leads to the worsening of the position, and then - back to 1. All these points 1-3 are linked to personality. They might be corrected at a young age, but not in the 30s. One has to change the whole personality. I am confident in my conclusions because I have exactly the same problems as Levi has and I am also old. I tried to change my cautious attitude by committing not to castle, by not playing my standard e4, but I failed.

On the c5 pawn move against Be3, the justification is that after a4 you Qc6 to attack the undefended knight, and now white has to self-pin with Kg2 and now black is better. So on c5 one significant benefit is that it opened the line of attack against the undefended knight that is now hard to defend because of Be3 blocking the way. Breaking this pin is not easy, by the way. And you can also see that the diagonal for the queen pointing directly at the king is quite a bit more active than the one that's, well, being blocked by the bishop. Now after the pawn gets locked on c6 this diagonal is no longer an option which doesn't allow you to take advantage of the weak light squares near the white king's position at all anymore.

This felt like a game where if you somehow found bishop h4, you'd almost feel bad for your opponent as you know they deserved the win, but got a draw due to a technicality that you didn't find until the last second out of desperation.
