You're a good track commentator and are objective about it. Noah is really a 200 meter runner so I think a strong 400 is definitely a possibility for him especially if he commits to training. It's amazing he trained to get the 100 down. I wish Noah the best and like his confidence and openness. From an American perspective, he seems good for a sport that mostly isn't even televised. For other countries where track is actually popular, they may consider him too much, but "too much" works in the USA and may even be necessary.
@TheFinalLeg

Appreciate you. I agree a strong 400m is very possible considering what he has done at 200m. And like he said, 100% committed to training for multiple years. I think Noah will get hate and get love, but its just the nature of his position. Like him or not he is showing up and performing on the track.

Letsile Tebogo trains with the Bayopo Ndoris and other 400m runners. Letsile has a chance to chase the world records in the 200 and 400 but for Noah, maybe if he started training for it in his early 20s for now I don't think he will be able to go sub 44. Even for the 200, Letsile is now the man to beat . Noah has had an incredible run and still is, but Tebogo has now landed as projected and will keep getting better
@TheFinalLeg

Great point that Tebogo trains with Ndori and I think Pesela, and obviously he has been running the 400/4x4 this year so has a better shat at the records compared to Noah. Noah does train with Jereem and Wayde, but yea its different since Noah isn't running 400s now. But anything can happen, maybe not world record, but wouldn't put sub 44 past Noah if he dedicated his time and training to it!

Saying he could break the 400m WR cos of his 19.31 200m PB cos Jereem ran a 43.78 PB with a 19.80 PB might just be the DUMBEST thing Noah has ever said given that WvN with a 19.84 PB damn near ran 42s with his 43.03 WR compared to MJ's 43.18 WR with his 19.32 PB! The last 100m in a 400m is different, not everyone handles it the same! Will bet good money that if Josephus ever finally commits to it, he'll run a faster 400m than Noah! Far more examples of guys with 19.7 - 20.5 PBs running the fastest ever 400s than guys with sub 19.7s PBs who have.

@@Elliottklassen Here's what Lyles is about. Of course he is never gonna break 9.58 and 19.19. But by not putting a limit on himself he might do better than he otherwise would. So he has the 3rd fastest time ever in the 200m. And he is currently 14th or 15th alltime in the 100m. He could bring that down to 9.75 on his best day and get into the top 10. It's all part of how he drives himself to do what he does. After the first two rounds in the Olympics everyone had their money on Thompson and Seville. And look what happened. This is why I say don't count him out. Would he break 43.03? No he wouldn't. But he might get MJs American record of 43.18. If he truly dedicated himself to it remember Johnson didn't set that record until he was nearly 32. And Lyles is 27. So do not count him out on anything. His best is still to come.

When it comes to Noah Lyles or any other athlete, I always say Never Say Never. A lot of people doubted Noah's 100m potential. Some people thought he couldn't win at Worlds last year and he did. Some people thought he couldn't be on the podium in the 100m Olympic Final but he did. Some people thought Noah could never run 9.7 but he did. Noah, as a runner, is one of those athletes you can never write off because they always have something to back up. I'm very certain if he wanted to, he could run some great 400m times. In terms of the 400m World Record, its possible because he's healthy, consistent in his development as a late bloomer, his pbs in the 100m and 200m make it reachable, and his overall training allows him to get stronger and faster as the season progresses. I would say he could go something like a 42.95 if he trained 100% as a prediction.

I always tell people that the 400m is a business decision made after you hit the 200m mark! Michael Johnson was a 400m specialist and he didn't break the WR until 2001 (?). It's not an easy race. You have to distribute your speed endurance across the entire distance. The last 3 WR holders in the event count finish well, and that's necessary.

It's really impossible to predict with the information we have so far how much he could improve. The only things we know at the moment that would help us make a preiction are his 45 relay splits without dedicated 400 training and the fact that he is able to maintain his top speed really well in the 200. His speed maintenance is the really positive thing from a 400 perspective and with dedicated 400 training that speed endurance should increase dramatically to help lower his 400 times. The problem is that everyone is individual and their response to different training stimuli is equally individual. If Noah responds really well to that training, then he could definitely break the world record, if he doesn't, he may struggle to get much below 45 seconds.

The 400 takes a different type of mentality, training, everything lol. When I used to run I ran against guys who’d run in the 10’s and 22’s for a 100/200 and not even go under a minute in the 400. I for one could not even break 12 in a 100, but I could hold a 12 for 400m, as well as run a faster 100m twice for a 200m. Only people who have ran a 100 vs a 400 would understand lol. 400m is a different beast entirely

I think its less that, and more he is just communicating his goals and what he wants to achieve. AT the end of the day, I think athletes should try and go for lofty goals and if they don't reach them (i.e. a 100m world record) you readjust and set new goals or try and attack your existing goals in a different way. IMO nothing wrong with that!

Lyles should try to improve his 100m and focus on the 200m and stick to those two. He is not going to even get podium level without 2 to 3 years of dedicated training for the 400m and by then he'll be close to 30. He would be extremely lucky to do a low 44 and that would be it.

Lyles is 27 now, put him in training for 2 or 3 years for the 400m he's going to be nearly 30 by the time he has the times down. He's already past his peak as a sprinter in terms of his age now. I think he's better off sticking to what he does best and getting as many endorsements as he can because the next few years will be his last, especially if he is injured which is also more likely to occur as he ages. He's never going to be the best 400m runner out there so why would he do that? He's no Sifan Hassan wanting to challenge himself. At best he'll make himself irrelevant.

So, he went to the 100, because it is the race that regular people care about and after he won he talked about the NBA. After that, a lot of people that never knew him started to know about him, for good or bad, because most of the people did not like the way that he acted in that press conference. But now he understands that, because he is not close to be as charismatic or fast as Bolt, he needs to keep talking crazy things to people notice him. It is kind of sad.

I would say sprint hurdle wise its the same. Distance wise I would have to look deeper, but I think the distance women (Faith, Sifan, Gudaf) have had more dominance at the top than any men have. But I think that's a case of specific athletes than any specific trend occurring on the women side (i.e grant holloway is more consistent at the top than any women short hurdler. Rai Benjamin has more medals since Tokyo than Warholm or Sydney, etc.)
