I remember my anthropology professor in college calling Chomsky a loon. Well, look at how right he has been!!! Our Republic got bought out a long time ago.

Baudrillard believed that Desert Storm with the perfect strikes on important targets with smart weapons was not real. Baudrillard would have believed it with The Highway of Death.

Yeah? Progressives these days tend to fly Ukrainian flags in support of the MIC. They also quietly aspire to take away freedom of speech in the name of compassion for oppressed. Very totalitarian. Very authoritarian.

Dennis Johnson in his Tree of Smoke shifts the setting from the Phillipines to Vietnam. Lansdale's successes against Hukbalkap guerillas, as well as the Uk's successes emboldened the Hawks in the Pentagon to stem communist expansion. Johnson got rich. Hughes Helicopter? The need for war materiel ballooned. Anyone remotely connected to defense/aerospace prospered. At the time of Khe San Bethlehem Steel was churning out bomb casings for Operation Niagara. JP Stevens made parachute cord and a filler for plastic sandbags in places where conventional sandbags were not practical. Such as corridors of HQs,etc. War is a tonic for an economy. A place like Naval Supply, or Oakland Army Base provides employment. Idle hands do the devil's work. Look at Oakland now. Mare Island, Concord Naval Weapons Station, Hunters Point. War bloods an army. The vets pass their wisdom along. So from the seizure of the Mayaguez to Grenada to Desert Storm quite a gap. Yet no draft. Vietnam syndrome. Hawks and Doves yup.

I am a great fan of Chomsky, but he has gotten 1984 completely wrong. It deals with the totalitarian idea rather than specific states (in fact much of it is directed at religious thought). The Idea of narrowing the ability of people to think about issues is clearly discussed in the novel. For example, Orwell's description of 'New Speak', the whole purpose of which, is to limit people's thoughts (let alone opinions) shows us how this can be achieved. You can watch any Whitehouse press briefing to see 'Doublethink' in action.

When people are polled, the happiest people are from the Scandinavian Social Democracies, something Chomsky wants the US to move towards.

@@ConciseChomsky as a european & a social democrat by the way, i am aware of these polls. But this is the great paradox: western europeans countries were able (after WW2) to produce all these enormous benefits because uncle Sam, the "evil" USA, the "horrible" Nato was providing for our safety... All these institutions that Chomsky relentlessly attacks the last 50 years made Europe a prosperous, safe & nice place to live!

You mean the one where he states one truth, and then carefully cherry picks all subsequent examples of "egregious crimes of hegemony", while conveniently ignoring all crimes committed in the name of Socialism, Communism, Anarchy, Anarcho-Syndicalism (his term)? All I ever learned from Chomsky is: "Media sells an audience to advertisers". All the rest is just anti-American bias and opinion.
