What about moderation...? It doesn't have to be ALL or Nothing, I often take breaks from purchasing records. What I have done is settled on a room size and a "shelf number," meaning I have 3 of the 2x2 Kallax shelves (12 cubbies) and that's ALL I want to keep and store. Shelves get full, then something has to go to be able to bring in something new (1-in-1-out). Truly though, to each their own and most importantly; live the life that makes you happy and allows you to sleep well at night.

I’m definitely in the one in one out phase. I did the math so to listen to everything I currently own is have to listen 40 days straight for 24 hours a day or if I listen to one record a day several years. That’s just not responsible so I try to keep it manageable for me at around 1200 LPs or so. I haven’t counted. I’m very addicted to 45s though so as long as I have space for now I’ve imposed no limits on those...yet!

Reading for everyone's comments has been interesting. I appreciate those of you who listened to our interview and respected my decision. As of yesterday when this was recorded, I sold all of my records, so I can't keep any. I knew what I was getting into when I made the decision, and now I have more money in my bank account than I've ever had in my life. Excellent video. I’d like to see more of them. Johnny, I believe you’ve made the right decision, especially by spending the money on travel (originally from Philly, I’m now living in my 7th country!) But also, who’s to say that record collectors will be around forever? I hope they are for your sake Noble Records, but . . . I’m 65 and I’ve got several collections that I’ve built up over the years, but now younger people for the most part, aren’t collecting them. I’ve got over 6,100 CDs, several thousand books, a cabinet full of Waterford Crystal, and other stuff. Better you sold them now and listen to streamed music as that will only get better. Good luck w your travels, Johnny!

Just curious, cause I think about selling my collection of about 1200 lps, how much did you profit in relation to your discogs estimated values percentage wise? Is that even possible for you to gauge? Just wondering cause I think about selling my collection and wonder if ill get the “low” “mid” or “high” estimate according to discogs. I imagine it would be between the low and mid estimate.

Thank you for this distinction. I've become a bit disillusioned with many of the people in the Instagram vinyl community who really seem to be in it purely for the collecting aspect and showmanship with little regard to love for music. I follow ModernWax and don't doubt his passion for music for one second, but man it broke my heart to see him part with his incredible library. Personally, my records are priceless physical embodiments of my lifelong obsession with music. I really don't think I could ever stand to part with them for a momentary financial boost. Nothing but respect for ModernWax though. His reasoning was well thought out and in good faith.

@@peatrick33 I agree. I always say the key to collecting vinyl, or just about anything really, is to just be open to allow yourself to go through phases. Allow yourself to enjoy picking up tons of albums, getting rid of tons of albums, getting into rare albums, listening to mostly digital, etc. I think as we go through this musical journey we need to always give ourselves permission to change. To do the very thing that 2 years before we said was ridiculous lol. As long as your collecting and music habit reflects who you are at that time...you are on the right track in my book lol. I've done some vinyl purges, but nothing to huge. Mainly stuff based on condition, but I do recall about 12 year ago when I first got into vinyl I started selling ALL my cds and made a good chunk of money to purchase vinyl...then about 3-4 years after that I sooooo regretted it and starting collecting Cds again. I don't consider it a "mistake", it is just where I was as a collector at that time and I went with it. lol

@@mrhoffame I fully understand what you are saying and we simply do what we do as individuals to make ourselves happy and we do change as we go through life(re selling your cds and now buying again) I guess I'm naturally a practical minded person who believes in functionality. I will openly admit that if I were in a better financial situation I may buy a few things to fulfil a collection but still believe I would keep it under control. Winning the lottery may change that though... I will let you know if that happens, and will give you all my cds as I would buy them on vinyl, original not digital remasters(there's another topic we could discuss). In my mind cds have 2 good points, generally quite cheap and practical.

Sold my entire collection to Manifest in 2004, when I was around this guy's age. I'd been collecting (mostly punk and indie rock) since the early '90s. Also sold my turntable, speakers and other equipment. Years and years later, I was watching a documentary about Morrissey and saw he had a Crosley sitting it in his kitchen. I ended up getting the same model, along with a few of my favorite records. It was a good solution for scratching that itch, for a while, but I soon ditched the Crosley in favor of a more proper setup. And now I'm back to having a "record room" in my house. The circle of life.

Fantastic video topic, I appreciate the honesty you both shared. I'm 26 and I think Johnny made a good choice - you can collect forever but you're not in your 20s forever. Go out and see things, you never want a hobby to own you. I've only been collecting for two years and I'm gonna slow down entirely for a while. It's not money or storage concerns, it's just such a time sink and as much as it's a fun hobby it's hard to not get obsessive at times. Unless collecting is linked to your profession I don't know if there's much to gain other than discovering new music to love and meeting some nice people along the way. I'm starting to embrace flacs and wavs more; they might not have the same sentimentality or nostalgia but it's a hell of a lot lighter, quicker and cheaper!

Spending too much money & filling their home with 1,000's of stuff they listen to once. Then there are "music lovers" (me) who are more pickier & tend to buy only recordings from bands they seriously like. This is why in my 40+ years i own only 955 albums (Vinyl /CD's/ Cassettes) Quality over quantity.

I think when I first started and found some early Michael Jackson albums, like 4 for like .50 cents each when I was like at the age of 11, I checked the vinyl. They may have been in like G+. So experienced record collector or not, check the records, even just so you know they will play without pops and skips. Also, I can see ppl. getting out of it and focus on something new. I did that many times and part of growing for me and giving something stelae a chance to master. Just remember, you’re doing all the things you do for yourself and not for others I’ve always been that kind of person and how I got into things from the very beginning bc I didn’t wait until it was the cool thing to do and when everyone jumped on after they got the green light approval from everyone. My records are integrated into my life. I grew up with jukeboxes in restaurants as a kid. I experienced the transition, as examples, from Frank Sinatra, to Little Richard, to Chuck Berry, to Motown, 45's to LP's, to the Beatles, to Floyd, to Zep and beyond. Radio stations on AM were hot and so were the disc jockeys. The top 40 meant something and kids waited for it to come out. An artist's next release caused a fever. Rock became edgy and political and caused social change. But when it helped stop theVietnam War, it got shut down by the powers to be and along came disco and other nonsense. The 80's thru 2020 has some very good releases, but it is not as dense and compact with talent as in the 60's and early 70's. REM, Janes Adiction, Radio Moscow, Tame Impala, Rage Against the Machine, The Doughboys are just a few examples. Also, I did not like school. The first serious reading I did that connected with me with the written word were album lyrics. Some were pure poetry. They had an affect on my views and the people I hung out with. And lastly, LP covers are works of art along with concert placards. I display them in my listening room. They are like one other. Cd's were a novelty at first, compact, and did not scratch easily. So everyone when for them. Then MTV at first was a serious ally became commercial then outright a dumbing down outlet. Download continued the decline because they were so sterile like so many new technologies are with no soul. That's why vinyl has made a comeback. I start everyday with coffee and a vinyl. As far as listening to all of them, I do not need to. It's enough to know they are in the room with me because so many tell a story of where I was in life when I was spinning them. And also just flipping through them and seeing the covers is like having my own personal art museum. Sell them, hell no! "By the way, which one's pink?"

Moving continents enforced the sale of my LPs. I've now almost completely rebought every single one of them and added even more than I've replaced. The best part about it is that, with online options these days, I've been able to set a better purchasing quality standard and the condition is generally a lot better than what I originally had. This guy will be back. Digital just doesn't cut it.

I'm 52, grew up with almost every format there is, never lost my love of records. I never got rid of the ones that I still had from my youth, but at one period in my life, I wasn't playing them to focus on my spiritual life, then started playing and buying again. I only know one guy who got out of vinyl - he sold his collection of about 8,000 records for $28,000 to a well-known online business. It was a very good collection, full of expensive jazz and rock, records that the buyer could easily sell for $30, $50, $100. Do you think a guy like that could really quit? Today, he has more records than ever.

Luckily for me, I never got rid of or even considered getting rid of my vinyl collection. Today, I still buy CD's and CD sets, but I have started buying limited edition new vinyl, like psych 60's re-issues.

I can see not buying or pre-ordering modern colored press if it’s just a digital transfer. It doesn’t have the magic. You can really enjoy the stream. But some these analogue represses are fantastic and can really be heirloom quality for those who can’t afford a grails or OG presses.

Hi, I'd be really interested in your thoughts on culling/downsizing collections. I have around 5000 albums and have spent the last month culling out around 500 and have found the process really difficult. There's not a lot of content out there on collection culling. Choosing to cull not selling because you have to because of financial reasons.

Started to sell my records back in the mid eighties as I was replacing them with cds. I couldn't get $2 for them, got frustrated and decided to keep them. I wouldn't have any problem with getting rid of most of them if I had them on cd, but it isn't worth the effort to me. Right now the only vinyl that I collect is The Who, it's about as large as the rest of my vinyl. Probably will never by another record that isn't Who related. Occasionally get something else on cd, but rare in the last year. I understand him selling the collection to do other things but it looks like something would have held some meaning to have kept.

I enjoy collecting as a hobby, but it would be difficult to maintain as a lifestyle. I just got a new record player (previously had a Crossly Cruiser and was convinced to abandon that piece of shit after watching one of your videos) so now my collection sounds incredible! It's bringing my records to life in a way I didn't think was possible. But anyway, that's beside the point. When it becomes an obsession, or as you put it, when the records start to own you, that's when it's time for a reassessment of your priorities. I've been that way with guitar gear before, and I had to put an end to that. Talk about a good way to blow through a lot of money! But it's like that with anything in life I suppose. As they say, everything in moderation.

An interesting conversation but this a strange time to decide to go traveling and it might be quite a while before one can. That is a real shame as traveling is the best things, especially while still young. I am however a music collector. I don't care about the format the music comes in or the pressing, etc. I just want the tunes but it has to be in physical form. Streaming services are of no interest at all except to check something out before buying.

Is there any sense in buying post 90s releases on vinyl? Or should I focus on collecting analog records first on vinyl and invest in good dac for modern releases? Thanks! Hey, if you just turned 32 you’re a little older than me. Haha. I try to get (when & if possible) early pressings if not first pressings of everything. As you get the hang of it, you start to learn which pressings you like best, it’s a case by case deal on each record. But original first is a good rule to go by. Good luck!

@@noblerecords thanks for advice:) yeah, "just" is little overstretched, 7th of April my bday:) got AT-LP60X for my first turntable, decided to spend more on records first and then upgrade to better turntable and/or speakers. Using my Edifier 1800T3 powered bookshelfs, so pretty simple setup, but I like it. One of reasons why I get into vinyl, is to keep music separate from PC/mobile. So I can discard distractions and just relax and listen to music.

It depends. If it’s a newer Pressing I always completely remove the shrink wrap. If it’s an old Pressing I usually leave it on if the jacket seems thick. Opening a record can decrease the value but not by a ton. It really depends what the record is.

Noble Records No rules.. We used to call that buying records not collecting. He got into records for a minute. That passes for collecting nowadays? He didn’t collect for ten years. The first few years he used granny’s giveaway turntable and played beat up old finds. Probably ruined more records than he harvested.. So his “collecting” or buying records is more like 6-7 years. But no disrespect to Noble Records. You have a great channel and I always watch your content. I’m just an old, grisly, grumpy buyer, who turned into a collector back in the late 80’s. Back then former record buyers (everyone) would make fun of you for still buying and having vinyl. Hip hop or rap saved vinyl, or at least kept it credible, during the Clinton era. Record buyers were the first to bail on the format and call you a nerd for sticking with it. I guess it was a blessing as people literally gave away test and first pressings. You got a busy schedule with show production, the family and business, so thank you for taking the time to reply. Best wishes..

So many, many months ago my landlord told me he had a box of records. He recently put them in a box-trailer (about 4 months ago.) He finally brought that trailer around today. I just got a glimpse of what he has. HOLY CRAP! There's a number of things I already have but possibly in better condition - shrink on lots of stuff but the one I saw that opened my eyes wide was what looks to be an original Sacred Mushroom. Hopefully, tomorrow(?) I can get my hands on that. He's going through the box tonight to see what he has. He's not into records at all and I don't think he has a computer to look anything up - I don't think the man has been online more than a dozen times - the dude doesn't even text. I don't think he thinks of vinyl records as being valuable. Sacred "MF'n" Mushroom! - this could be my pick of the year.

My dad was in his early 40's and never really was into music and I have NO idea why he bought it. I wasn't even a teenager but I scooped it, as I loved it. Still have it and just about sh*t myself when I looked up what it goes for a few years ago. But then I don't collect for the value, while nice, it's always the music. Still have every record I ever bought, starting in 68 when I bought Simon and Garfunkels Sounds of Silence when I was 10 with birthday money. Now stand at about 2000 LP's and about 2500 CD's.
