I'm so impressed with your work ethic, determination, and passion....as a wholesale rep in the shoe biz for 40 years I've met 100's of independent retailers, and I'm immediately drawn to the both of you....you have all the intangibles to be a very successful merchant, and believe you me I'm rooting for you and your family. Your love and dedication to each other is so inspiring. I'm 67 and just recently had my vintage turntable restored, and replaced all paper & plastic sleeves for my record collection. I live here in Charlotte and I'll be by to congratulate you on your success and buy some records from you. Best wishes for your continued success, y'all rock!

There was a record store in Sioux City Iowa called Uncle John's that was located in an older residential area. The store had tremendous atmosphere and amazing music was always playing back when vinyl was king (CD's didn't exist). The store was a destination. If I had my vinyl moved to digital I'd offer up my 550 LP's. I'm enjoying your videos and I'm buying a t-shirt. Good luck with the store!

Good luck with the new record store! I'm sure it doesn't feel new after already doing it for a year. But whatever the case, I hope y'all are very successful with it. I found your KZbin channel through a comment made on another KZbin channel I am 95% sure as I have been learning and reacquainting myself with the vinyl passion again. And I've enjoyed your videos and the knowledge you share in those videos. I'm a diehard Led Zeppelin fan as well as the diehard Journey fan (certain eras of Journey anyhow). But I just love music and have since I was a kid. I love all kinds of good music and thrive on the mid-60s to maybe mid '80s era of rock and roll the most. My tastes and ear for music has changed through the years as well and I have noticed that vinyl collecting really expands my desire to check out things I never even considered checking out during the CD years. I don't know why? But I know that it's something I have noticed. It could be the fidelity of the medium or the memories associated with the albums I grew up listening to. Music can take you places in your mind, back to specific times and moments in your life, like nothing else can do. At least it's that way for me and a lot of people I know. So I'm always a supporter of those who are trying to help me with my passions. And especially when they share the same passions themselves. I'm legally blind now and I didn't really think I'd be able to get back into vinyl collecting like I used to do until I actually did it. Not only for visual reasons but financial reasons as well were factors since I don't make the money I used to when I had a normal job. But I'm so glad I took the plunge a little over a year ago and started collecting again when I had the funds to purchase a good turntable and start purchasing the music I wanted on vinyl. It's definitely a trip down memory lane and it's something I have been very active in, and learning a lot about, over the last year and a few months. I can't explain what it does to me when I'm able to sit back and enjoy the incredible audio and remember, and sort of relive, what the music did to me decades ago when I was first getting into it. It's a wonderful medium and I'm glad to hear that so many others have been getting into vinyl again as the vinyl revolution surges. I didn't even know that was happening when I was able to finally start back. I just learned about it as I learned about a lot of things dealing with vinyl and vinyl collecting nowadays that I didn't really know about when I was younger. But it's great to see the community of vinyl enthusiasts that are out there today and see how well this passion is thriving! Oh yeah, and not to forget mentioning the younger generation I have seen getting into a lot of the older music on vinyl. I had all but given up hope on the "youngsters" (I'm 55) carrying on any of the great classics we love. Little did I know, there really are quite a number of new collectors that are really young and getting into the same stuff like Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd or whatever that we did when we were there age. They're going to be the ones carrying it on in the decades to come once we are gone :-) Again, good luck on the record store and if I'm ever out in your part of the country I will definitely be stopping in and browsing/buying. I'll probably be buying from you online before that too haha. God Bless and keep up the good work! 🎶😎🎶.

Hey Dylan, quick question, I have been considering opening an online jazz vinyl store but I was wondering if I got to pay the original vinyl owner (the artist) for the vinyl? So for example can I sell an Art Blakey CD/vinyl and do I need to give art blakey some of the money?

Hi there and happy New Year.! Don't know who you are I've come across a couple of your podcasts or whatever you want to call them , obviously I'm internet ignorant but to get to the point whoever you guys are I think you're great I listen to you talk to this guy about 180 g records that was great and lightning makes sense too I consider myself an audio file I've been into audiophile equipment since I was hell 13 and I'm 60 I've laid off for the last 15 years or so due to health and whatnot but I just want to say you guys are really likable and I love the conversations and the topic that you address you get into it and it's really interesting educational informational and I just want to say I'm rooting for you guys and if I knew the name of your place and saw your line perhaps I'd even buy a shirt or something from you either way you have such a stranger here that is really impressed with you and wishes you all the best and then some God bless you guys and I believe and hope and pray that it is only uphill from here keep up the great work I think you guys got what it takes and that half of that is simply just the way you are your demeanor etc. I did not proofread this so half of it's probably coming out nonsensical sincerely your new fan

Pet Sounds IS Pop Psych. I get it, Surf is 60's pop, but you have to consider the time in which it came out and that it inspired Sgt Pepper. Psych is foundational to the creative path that rock n roll took post Pet Sounds as well.

i am in the same boat as you low cash , and got a chance to open !! hardly anything to sell and i am going to gut my collection to start which hurts but i am confident stuff will come back ... i have an account with a distributor so hopefully get some credit to get started !! maybe loan a couple k to start up from family luckily i have another business which pays my bills so as long as the shop covers its own costs to start i can get by ... but it is small - probably only hold a few thousand records but theres not a shop on my side of a very big city so i reckon i will be ok - just need a few dream collections to walk through the door in the first few weeks ! watching you gives me hope though !! similar story too , married 14 years with a kid and even though i have my own business i hate it and want to do something else so the wife agreed if i keep earning to pay bills i can have the shop - so heres praying it takes off so i can give up the other job eventually ... any tips im all ears ! im in the uk, wish i was closer to you for a chat :-)

I bought up every I could from 1996 to 1998 of records collections at yard an estate sales in the Sacramento area. Now after all of the years of everything else and needing an income after losing my farm and wealth after divorce and cancer, I am looking into the massive collection of vinyl. My electronics background and tube hifi hobby and now singing and saxophone have me really into music at a different level than 25 years ago. I will start again in sorting and getting the records ready for sale and will be looking into a retail spot to sell them. About 18,000 albums, and maybe 10,000 45s and 78s to sell. I appreciate your telling your story of why you did the store. I have the Hw17 and Hw19 rcm and table from VPI. I also met many in the hi fi business at hi fi 97. Friends with JS of stereophile and had a on on one with Victor or BAT. But it's the records that have the soul. Hopefully I can find a few jewels to make some money. It's tough being broke after health issues. But I thenk you for being a light and encouraging me to give it a go at trying to sell other than ebay. I sold most of the 20 and 25 dollar new MFSL 200 anadiscs I bought at the 97 show. Made a huge profit. Wish I had bought more than the 30 albums I bought. But will finally get this collection to work for me in this crazy reinvention of life. Thank you..

I’m glad you both did well, and then survived during the pandemic. You both are great and I absolutely love your videos. Keep it up. It will only get better. It will only go further. I always had records. Never really listened much. Just had them because they were part of “history”. Recently about a few months ago I got into vinyl heavy. Going a a search for specific records, coming home from a long day of work and laying down vinyl is amazing. I bought high end speakers, a high-ish middle of the line record player and added a bunch to my already existing collection of records all in the last few months. It’s great. Wish you both the best.

I searched up how to open a record store and this was the first video I clicked. Sure it was 42 min long but I was listening to this as if it were a podcast and re-sleeving a bunch of records! I'm so happy I found this video and it was so relatable, to an extent. New sub and I love the content you have Dylan and Emily, I'm definitely going to stop by when passing through town! Hope you guys are still doing great and business is booming!

What if you made a very small “The Haggle Bin” with a sign that says “Dude! These are the ONLY records I will haggle on!” Keep a few in there, sparse. Who knows, over time it could train folks and cut down on energy vampires.

No matter what happens, do not let the business, good or bad, have an effect on you two as husband and wife. If doubts come up, discuss it. But, nothing is more important than your family. Family, then family and then family.... then, business :) I'll go in and order a shirt.

Officially subscribed! I'm pretty discriminating on whom I subscribe, and have disagreed with some of your opinions. So bringing together what I have learned from this video and the fact that you have opinions that I can disagree with, makes you legit and someone I can learn from (When the student is ready, the teacher appears.) I thank you both for being so down-to-earth and consistent. Hoping 2021 brings much joy and profit!

Hi from Australia. Love your videos. Great to see you having success doing something you obviously love. And you are lucky to have Emily right by your side-what a lady! Retail is hard all the time everywhere, even without Covid. Hope you continue to be successful.

Awesome story of hard work, teamwork and just a sprinkling of luck! I wish you both all the best for your venture, believe me vinyl will never go away a second time……so many people made that mistake once, it won’t happen again! My father once told me “the only business partner you should have is the one you share your bed with”, I guess you proved that right. Cheers from Oz🍻

Loved this video guys! Had just watched your podcast one talking with Emily about all the years leading up to the store. I know you will continue to have great success because of all the hard work and sacrifices you have both endured to get where you are! God had the plan all along- you guys had the faith, endurance and love to make it happen. Great couple, great story and an amazing record store! Blessings to you and your boys.

It is so lovely that you share your story. Especially so because you are so frank about the financial challenges, so many people want to pretend it’s all glamorous. Its really refreshing to hear the real of it not just the frosting on top.

I'm a music junkie and I live in New York City and I just of course do the pandemic have had a life adjustment LOL anyhow I've been going through KZbin and I came across your channel and I absolutely love it and this particular presentation with you and your wife and how you got started is absolutely just an incredibly beautiful story of what two people who believe in each other can achieve and when they work hard to be in sync going in the same direction what the result can be well all I can say is congratulations on the first of multiple decades and of course hopefully someday if I pass through North Carolina I will stop in at your store. God bless you both and keep this world rocking with all the good music that there is because music is a universal language.
