Funny story from a few weeks ago. Hit up an Antique shop and they had a few of the early Elvis soundtracks, still in shrink with hype stickers. You rarely see them as clean as these were. Almost like someone bought them and never played, just opened. The dealer placed his price sticker under the shrink, and when I took them to check out, the random antique worker (you all know the type of person i'm talking about), started as if to just yank the shrink off to get to it thinking it was just something the dealer had on there !! I was like Whoa Whoa! I'll do that for you. That's been on there for 60 years!!!! Almost gave me a heartattack as I was able to upgrade to my "final" copies of those records being a huge Elvis collector., but I then calmy explained to this person how nerdy our hobby is, and that shrink and hype stickers are a big deal to some....

Hi, I`ve got a promo copy of Donald Fagen`s The Nightfly. Sounds beautiful. This is one of my favorite records of all time. And the album I use when I buy any audio gear. Full spectrum. This vinyl will bring out any flaws or features in the best ( or not so best ) of stereo equipment. I think your show is great. Thanks for the info and inspiration.

I agree completely with you about shrink-wrap. As long as it's not so tight that it warps the jacket, I usually leave it on, especially if there's a hype sticker and/or price sticker attached. It's an extra bonus when the price sticker is from some obscure, long gone neighborhood record store.
@jeffreylind37393 жыл бұрын
Love your videos! I always try to get as close to NM, and original press as possible, and trade up until I do. Records in that condition are worth considerably more than other copies. I keep the shrink if it has hype/price stickers and is in good shape. If it's dirty, ripped, worn, or no stickers I remove it. I bought a copy of The Beatles White Album, first press, still in tight, clean shrink with the original price sticker, poster, portraits, records in NM condition. The cover is spotless, nearly perfect, no fading, bumped corners, nothing! Was told the previous owner bought it, didn't care for it (what!) and put it in a spare bedroom closet with other records, where it remained in a time capsule for 50 years until her passing. Wow ! I bought it in 2018 with a mono promo of Magical Mystery Tour. That just never happens.

When I get ringwear on a white cover I find using a white eraser normally rubs it away very easily (works best on matte surfaces but sometimes gloss is ok too). A water-based make-up remover applied to cotton pads then restores some shine to the sleeve. Hope that helps anyone out there if you didn't already know about this hack!

I started up grading almost right away. I get a lot off of Ebay and, in doing so I have on a few occasions bought albums based on the sellers description. Then after weeks of waiting found out that they sound like crap. Just because they visually look good doesn't mean they are going to play well. The problem I have upgrading is I don't have a store to sell my duplicates. Another thing I struggle with is knowingly trying to sell less than perfect vinyl. A friend of mine told me that I am a vinyl snob just because I don't like snap crackle pop while listening. Snob or, not I love clean vinyl!!!

That Tyrannosaurus Rex 'A Beard Of Stars' LP is gorgeous! I'm in and from England, and have a NM copy of that first press Regal Zonophone label too, and it also includes a lyric sheet! Yes it's usually an alleged Hendrix quote about a number of guitarists. Now you mention it I have heard the Clapton/Prince one too. I worked at a radio station for nearly 40 years. I retired 2 years ago and the owner let me pick through the album archive stored in the attic when I left. I picked about 100 records and they are all promo's. Some white label, some not. Some with timing stickers and some not. Most had the crap played out of them but one of my prize possessions from that pick is Pink Floyd's Animals. It is in an all white jacket with "Pink Floyd Animals Special DJ Copy" stamped in the center and "Demonstration Not For Sale" stamped in the upper right hand corner. The disc labels are the same as the commercial album except they are stamped "Demonstration Not For Sale". Also, the music director at the time would stamp the date the album was received at the radio station. This one was received within days of the albums release. But the very best part is that nothing on this album fit in with the station format so it was never played.

Captain Beefheart's former manager, Grant "Grizzly" Gibbs, lives in my hometown of Auburn, California. We became friends when he opened a record store in the early 70's, and over the years has shared many stories about the band and other acts he managed at one time or another. He remembers having boxes of the Trout Mask Replica Lp in the trunk of his car and visiting record outlets, radio stations, etc., in an effort to promote Captain Beefheart. One of his thoughts that stuck with me was that back in the day, he could barely give away those free copies! Griz is alive and well, just turned 90 this past week...

I feel like people who only collect new records definitely don't get it. The vintage crowd seems to be more open to the idea of leaving it on. The pressings are not the same. First initial pressings have different title and printing set up on the labels. One way to know if you have a first issue is to check the song Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. If it runs together without spaces, first press. "Bungalow Bill" should just say those two words. If it says "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill' you have a second press. There are others as well.

“An acquired taste” my thoughts wander to Wild man Fischer or the Fugs. I was told back in the day (60s-70s) that white label promos were sometimes a hotter mix made for radio play. May have been for AM radio and 45s, I forget. But also they wore out quicker.May have been someone feeding me BS. Thoughts anyone?
@jjquinn20043 жыл бұрын
Don’t know for sure about the hotter mix, but I’d also heard that. Re wearing out faster, those AM stations in the 60s played the living hell out of them. We had two in Philadelphia: WFIL and WIBG and sometimes the same Top 40 song would be played about once an hour. Having said that, I know they had multiple copies of those Top 40 45s because at least WFIL had a mobile broadcasting bus that would visit an offsite event and broadcast. As a pre-teen I once asked the DJ what happens if someone else at the studio wanted to play the song. He laughed at me and told me they had more than one copy.

@@jjquinn2004 We had hourly plays of hot songs as well in Rochester. It might be that the mono mix on the singles were hotter when they went to mono stereo singles, i'm not sure.

This is a bit off topic, but I'm always trying to get real close to the screen to identify all of those grateful dead boxes over your shoulder sir. Is that a dick's picks 34? And if so.... HOW DOES IT SOUND? It's the most valuable thing in my collection, and yet the worst sounding live dead I have... lol that being said, it's still an incredible show and I love it. Just not sure if it's worth seeking an upgrade or of they all sound a little muddy?

Great records. Shrink-wraps though? They’re bits of cellophane ffs. Cut off the stickers and keep them and throw that horrid cellophane in the bin. That’s what I do. Got a gate-fold ‘in the shrink’? Throw away that worthless bit of crap and enjoy the artwork as the artist intended. Most of all put those records on the turntable and play them.
@noblerecords3 жыл бұрын
Saying “shrink wrap is just cellophane” is like saying “the record is just a piece of plastic” it shows that the record has been taken care of, someone has cherished it enough to keep it on, if there’s stickers. They are exactly as they were when the album came out, and most of all... I just like it, and that’s reason enough.

@@noblerecords Not really because the sound is in the grooves of the LP so it’s not just a piece of plastic but then the cellophane is just that: plastic. Back in the day in the UK new records were not cellophane-wrapped much anyway. Underneath that bit of clingfilm someone chose a particular type of card which is lost under the horrid, wrinkly, shrivelled wrapper. Then if it’s still on a gatefold that’s sad. It means someone never opened it out to see the artwork. Only in recent years in the UK have companies (annoyingly) started putting stickers ‘on the shrink’ including the titles of many LPs.

Shrink has to go, no matter what, new record, old Blue Note. I hate shrink wrap, I will never get it, why people leave it on.

Every time I see a James Brown lp the cover and lp are beat. I did luck up and find his first lp Think with the baby face cover at an estate sale years ago for a dollar.
