I couldn't tell if that's what I heard or detonation, it's hard to hear, especially while it's idling to the moon on a brand new engine, then giving it throttle ontop of that. Every video "it sounds good" meanwhile you hear that, or a 2 stroke that's sputtering or detonating, especially when he's riding them and has load on the engine.. He's a good mechanic for sure, good at diagnosing issues, but he doesn't know how to tune a bike, what he's listening for, or what a properly tuned bike sounds like....and he revs the piss out of everything for absolutely no reason at all.

What a huge bummer. Joe, I have learned many things in my life, but one lesson I have learned in my 65 years, is never to assume anything! I would have torn down the top end on that bad boy, just because someone else said they rebuilt it, doesn't mean they did it right or have your level of competence in rebuilding engines. I have seen some of the stupidest shit in a ledgy rebuilt engine. Things only being halfway installed or put in upside down or backward. Seals not seated Etc. Can't wait to see what the FUBAR is with this one! :) PS: I am thinking the chain guide was not installed right or locked in and the chain came off letting the valves hit the top of the piston, plus when you are in there look at that spark plug-hole threads, I think they may be buggered up and may need a thread chasing. Just a thought.

I gotta hand it to you, Joe. You never seem to get angry. I'd be pissed if I put in that much work only to have a bike grenade in the first fifty feet. At least now, when you sell it, you can claim that virtually everything is brand new engine-wise.

@@2vintageyes this happened to me never trust the auto tensioner. Replace with manual one I bought from eBay. It will be tight run good then outta nowhere loose tension and get loose. After removing tensioner and putting my body weight on it I noticed it would decompress. Very common

Looks like you need a bore-scope. That way, you can check spark plug threads, piston, and valves. Saved me lots of time when twisted wrenches for Ford. Hopefully, you can get her going easily after that quick spin.

When you open carburetors to service them with the screwdriver you use, is it a JIS “Japanse industrial standard” Phillips screwdriver tip? It is different than a #2 Phillips and will strip less and be easier to remove stuck screws. All those carburetors are made in japan using Japanese hardware.

Will be good to see what it was. It happened to me when I refreshed my 93 CR125 (in 93). I used a Wiseco piston and did not mic it. It was oversized, so when the engine heated up under load it locked up. Frustrating, but that should always be checked, just like the ring gap. Absolutely not saying it was your fault, but it does happen that new parts get shipped out of spec. Same exact noise/ reaction by the way.

The bike sounded like a ticking time bomb with the valve knock... You checked what I thought might make those terrible sounds, but those sounds are never good and need investigated ASAP especially after a rebuild. This wasn't your fault and it is killing me wondering what gave way inside the motor Joe! Maybe some Chinesium parts were used by the previous owner in the rebuild? I love your videos and keep up the good work! You have came a long way over the years buddy!

I left the fuel petcock open over the winter and when I went to start my '04 CRF450R it wouldn't. It would start for a few seconds if I pulled the hot start (adds air) so I knew it was the carb. Cleaned and rebuilt the carb and no joy. Took it to the dealer and that was a shit-show. It was there for over eight months. I finally bought a new carb and that fixed it.

At 10:14 "Ya air filter is missing" ... Well yeah, you never want an air filter on a freshly rebuilt dirt bike, lawn mower, paving equipment, etc. I learned this from a union laborer when I was 14 lol
@Hammerback07 ай бұрын
Yeah, always good to leave the filter off of any freshly rebuilt engine. Ive done little work on atvs, but have a bit of experience with car engines. The 638 CI BBC has maybe two passes on it, i wouldnt dare start it unless the air is full of dust and there are no filters on the carbs.

@@Hammerback0 Ideal timing would be when the neighbor is blowing his yard with his 200mph wind machine. All kidding aside it is sad that this poor engine started and ran well enough to dial in the carb and load it up for a ride. (with the air filter installed) Can't wait to see what rookie mistake the builder made.
