One of the most overlooked horrors of the movie is how Trumam was being pushed to have a baby who would not just be the first "on screen conception" but also be a person bred to continue the show
@Eyrothath
@Eyrothath 11 ай бұрын
There was several scenes that were never filmed and Marlon was in disapproval of the baby cause it wouldn't have actually belonged to "Truman" and in a scene that wasn't filmed he let's Truman go when they are looking for him..

Hearing you yelling: “¡Que puta!” at the director feeding Marlon his lines was my favourite part of this react. It showed how disturbed by this movie you were getting. They get you into theater promising a Jim Carey comedy only for you to realize by the end you just watched a psychological horror / tragedy. It takes an extremely good director / screenwriter to tow that line which is why this movie deserves all the praise it gets.

I always thought the travel agent lady had a napkin around her neck but I found out that is a covering used behind the scenes for those doing makeup to protect the costume.
@bigdream_dreambig

Yep. Truman went to the travel agency so suddenly that the actress plain the travel agent had to get ready in a hurry. She was in such a rush that she (or the makeup artist) forgot to take it off before she went "on stage," so once she realized her mistake she had to remove it without drawing extra attention to it.

His best work imo. The reason this film was called a “comedy” was because Jim Carey fans wouldn’t accept anything else. That’s also the reason he didn’t win an Oscar. The “comedy” tag (while attracting Carey fans) isn’t even remotely true, the “jokes” that are “played for laughs” are often about how miserable he is in his current life. Jim Carey was also phenomenal in showing the psychological cracks that come with finding out your whole universe is fake. It’s an existential horror and tragedy sold as a comedy, so it never got the praise it deserved

A producer who's loved his creation since it was born, but is willing to drown it and start over if he doesn't like what it does with its free will... They were definitely piling on the allegory at the end, but I respect it. More thought-provoking than almost any other blockbuster Hollywood has put out in recent years. (and yes this was a big-budget summer movie)

Hey Vanessa, great reaction to one of my favorite films. A few comments... 1) People were not ready for this film when it came out. It got mixed reviews and didnt do as well at the box office as hoped. Mainly, IMO, because they marketed it completely wrong. Carrey was strictly a comedic actor before this, and the film's trailer was cut in such a way to make it look like another comedy. Sure, there are laughs in TTS, but it is far from a comedy, clearly. 2) One of the best TV series of the 21st century, Black Mirror, is very much in line with this movie. Decades earlier, there was The Twilight Zone. But yeah, this came in between, when there really wasn't anything else like it. If you ever do TV reactions Van, please look into Black Mirror. It is an anthology series, every episode is a stand-alone story (though, as the series goes on, some elements begin to intertwine). 3) As frustrated and empathetic to Truman so early in this movie as you were, Van and as happy as you were to see him leave that place, you still admitted at the end, you wanted to see that reunion with Sylvia. But, not showing that is really one of the most impactful decisions in the direction of this story. Once Truman steps through that doorway, our access to him is cut - forever. As it should be. But, as much as he deserves his free will, his own life, we cannot help but want to see certain things happen for characters in stories. We then, as an audience, are somewhat complicit in something like the Truman Show existing and thriving in the first place.

If you think about it, Truman's parents and his best friend are just as much victims, especially his best friend. Even if at the beginning there was a story of money and I would even say a job for the rest of their lives, if they are not his real parents, they have raised him since he was a baby and that must have to be heartbreaking for the father to be forced to abandon his son and that's why he tried to see him again. And his best friend, imagine that he too hasn't left this world since he was 7 years old and that he too was formatted to lie to Truman as if for him, it was always normal no matter if he knows the truth. Everyone around Truman is also held captive to this parody by the love they have for Truman as well as the fact that they won't really be able to reintegrate into the real world so easily either. It's not like everyone else who has their daytime interaction with him and can get back into the real world because it's not as important to Truman to be asked to stay just in case. Only his wife is really interested only in herself and we can see this very clearly because she has much less emotional investment than those who really grew up with him. She hasn't been formatted (already an adult when she took on this role) and isn't really afraid of losing it compared to the other members of Truman's entourage.

When that movie was released, the phenomenon of people "streaming" (I don't know whether that was a word) their life with super crappy webcams on personal websites (KZbin or Twitch were not a thing) was starting. People were streaming random things, like the view from their window, their kitchen, or sometimes even their whole house. My sister was into those kind of websites, weirdly enough. There's also a French-Canadian movie called "Louis 19, King of the Airwaves" (1994), which had some similarities with The Truman Show.

The thing about the 50's look/fashion is because it is generally acknowledge that during that time, life in the US was more peaceful/idyllic in comparison to decades after. It is an image that contradicts all the messed up things that happened from 1963 until today. The creator of the Truman Show wanted to create the perfect life for Truman. Many ppl watch this show as a form of escapism too. The crossing fingers means wishing good luck. people not recognizing it, made me feel way too old... they should've used a mechanical shark like in Jaws. The him saying he should've brought a bigger boat. Being scared of the sea is easy enough to last quite sometime.

The outdoor scenes are not a set. That was filmed in an actual resort town. Seaside Florida. It was designed as a perfect, planned community, with strict building codes. Every building had to fit in aesthetically (only a select range of unobtrusive pastel colors with white trim), but with just enough variation in the structural design of each building so that no 2 structures were exactly alike. It's actually a very nice area, but it's gotten too crowded these days. I still prefer my old hometown which is just west of there.

This is the perfect movie to have a couple of spin-off / sequel movies. One would be on the TV crew, and the realities of having 1000's of actors around the clock, all improvising, and all willing to give their entire lives to the Truman Show. How could this be profitable? Everyone involved on the show would need to be happy to gaslight Truman. A sequel could be on the fallout when he walks through that door. Think of the lawsuits, the culture shock. When it was obvious that Truman knew, and wanted out, they still subjected him to a storm that nearly killed him.....for the ratings. Jim Carrey is an amazingly underrated actor. He's well respected as a comic actor, but he's way more than that. I'd recommend a Jim Carrey double bill. Check out "Man On The Moon"; a biopic of Andy Kaufman, then a documentary called "Jim Meets Andy" about his approach to playing his hero Andy Kaufman. Jim is a method actor, who stays in character all the time. It gave me a whole new level of respect and admiration for Jim Carrey. Jim Meets Andy is on UK Netflix now. Andy Kaufman was an alternate comedian who LOVED to shock the audience. Andy was also a method actor, so this performance from Jim was multi-layered.

Some "religious" references in this film...when Truman gets off the boat the perception of the camera shot makes it look as if he is walking on water and he walks up the "stairway to heaven"; the director's name is christof (CHRISTof)--when he speaks to Truman, he pauses slightly when he says "I'm the creator...of a television show..."--in a sense he is the god of Truman's world.

A 28-year experiment in child abuse. With over a billion people guilty. Or, as I said about it in 1998: "Man meets God. And tells Him to go fuck Himself." EASILY the best movie of 1998. Naturally, it didn't win the Oscar. Didn't even get nominated. Nor did Jim Carrey. (Ed Harris [Christof], director Peter Weir and screenwriter Andrew Niccol were all nominated. All of them lost. The Oscars suck.) A pleasure to watch it with you. (Noah Emmerich's Marlon is so damn good at betraying his "friend" [in contrast to Laura Linney as Meryl, where you can easily see that Meryl has been faking it all the time and only got the job because she could read the product placements] that I have a visceral reaction to Emmerich in any role since. I realize that I'm making Noah pay for Marlon's crimes, but I can't really help it.)

Honestly, if I was in his situation maybe this is bad but, I'd choose to stay. Garentee to never be homeless, my dreams could come true, I'd be given the best medical care.

You know, there was a Twilight Zone episode whose plot was remarkably similar to that of this movie. The same can be said for Child's Play, Poltergeist, and I'm sure many others.
