In this video I converted my Honda Goldwing from a Acid Lead Battery to a 600 Cranking Amp Noco Lithium Battery.

CORRECTION: The battery has two temperature ranges, Operation temperature and Charging temperature. The charging temp range is from -10 celsius to 140 Fahrenheit. The Operating temp is from -4 degrees Fahrenheit to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

Chris, I put a NOCO battery in my BMW K 1600 several months ago. Extremely light weight and high CCA. So far no issues. I bought off Ebay new and only $100. Also got the NOCO battery tender. Made in America is a good selling point.

Extremely detailed, informative, well thought out, and presented video. This is how Caliente does it, and in true Caliente form. Subscribe to this channel and give this man props, he does this to help the motorcycle world. It will be interesting to see future updates, I think the lithium batteries are going to do just fine, in this application. I don't think many people ride in duration at 10 degrees (could be wrong there), and although it gets hot I don't think the battery area sees 140 degrees. If it does I would think the heat from that temperature would transfer to the left leg, which I've never felt. And I rode in 116 degree heat today for about 50 miles, on a gold wing, near death valley. Great job on this video, it will give many people some great information. And I'll see you back in the Caliente garage.

I really like the much higher CCA of the battery, I think that really helps getting the battery started easier. What I don't like is that the GYZ20L is a 20AH battery, that you can sit running your accessories without starting the bike using that battery power, and you have now replaced it with NOCO NLP20 which is a 7AH battery. I'm concerned that although the CCA is much higher, it just doesn't have even half the capacity of the original Goldwing battery

Yes the Yuasa has a 20 Amh capacity, the Noco Lithium battery has a 7 Amh capacity but it’s (PbEq) is 19 Amh equivalent. The Lithium battery is far superior because it can safely discharge 100% of its usable amps but a Lead Acid battery can only discharge 50% of its useable amps. Did I mention that the Noco has rapid recharging technology which means that you can rapid charge a discharged Noco Lithium battery in only 42 minutes, you can’t do that with a Lead Acid battery.

Chris, as an overlander, I had a dual battery set up in my diesel truck but the lithium battery was in the back, not under the bonnet (hood). In trucks or cars, Lithium batteries struggle with the high cranking current demands of the starter motor. This kills the lithium battery but lithium batteries are excellent for lights and accessories or appliances which I ran in the back. I left the lead-acid battery under the bonnet as my starting battery and I didn't run any accessory off it. But perhaps this could be a different situation for the Gold Wing starter motor.

You referred to your Gold Wing as a 'boat'? I'm certainly getting a new understand of riding. I'm an overlanding guy; I drive and wild camp in the bush with my children. It's a completely different experience to the one I'm learn from you, except of course, I haven't actually done any riding. But I'm loving it.

Very good vid and nice install. Looking at Noco for my bagger. Forgot to mention. Noco bats bought at Auto Zone, in store or online, have a 5 year warranty through the store. If it fails take it to a store for replacement. Sometimes, most of the time, dealing with a manufacturer is painful and takes weeks for a replacement due to shipping and lack of response.

Since your Goldwing is new, your OEM Yuasa battery should be good for a while but when it’s time to replace the battery that would be a great time to consider upgrading to Lithium because 250 CCA are good but 600 CCA is even better.

Says need special charger to detect ( which I have noco 2 Amp charger). Which makes sense…. I had AGM battery in past which I darn well know alternator does not fully charge the battery fully on the road, it discharge and alternator maintains at that rate, I get stuck out on road at softball field or whatever…. I cannot start the GW… had to jump it. Once home…. Put the charger on. Then AGM battery is fine . Question is is this lithium battery same way?? Will the alternator charge it back to its original state??? I hate AGM thus it does last longer. Month ago bought acid/gel battery. Previous battery was acid lead… lasted 2 years. My Honda 700cc shadow has acid/gel in it ( sealed) (after acid put in) and so far lasts close 3 years so far. It’s smaller than the GW.

So I have a question about charging. If you need a different type charger for LIon, how do you address charging from the bike? The alternator charging circuit doesn't know or care what type battery it's charging. How does the lion accept the alternator charge that was made to charge lead acid batteries? I'm having a hard time following why you can't charge a LIon the same way you charge a lead acid.

This is a very good question! I'm curious about that as well. I'm not sure about the goldwings but my Kawasaki has a stator as opposed to an alternator. In either scenario I'm curious as well.

Yes, you can theoretically charge a Lithium battery with a lead acid charger but you can shorten the life of the lithium battery. Lead acid batteries has larger internal resistance than Lithium batteries therefore during the charging process, regular chargers will increases the charging voltage to overcome resistance. In layman's terms lead acid chargers can over-volt lithium batteries by pumping higher amounts of voltages into the battery causing irreversible damage to LifeP04 batteries. So if you feel comfortable with charging an expensive Lithium battery with a none recommended charger then I say, “go for it”.

@@chriscaliente5033 But Chris. Our alternator just pumps out voltage. It doesn't change what it delivers to a battery. How do we not overcharge the LIon on our bike charging system? I mean theoretically isn't it up to the battery to accept the voltage from the alternator and regulate itself from not accepting any more charge once it's charged?

Yes you can jump a Lithium battery with a lead acid battery because you are not over-volting the Lithium battery.

Nice video! very detailed. How is the NOCO NLP20 doing? I have the exact same battery on my HD 2020 heritage classic. For the winter I had it stored and attached to the NOCO10 battery charger/maintainer. After about 1 month I noticed the battery maintainer went from full charge 13.5V solid green, to blinking green then to red which indicated a dead battery at 1.4V. I don't have any components that draw energy from the battery, i tested all parameters and they are fine. Now, I jump started the bike and it instantly started showing 13.5V which is fully charged. I had to use the boost feature on my portable charger because 1.4V isn't enough to jump it. Has any lithium battery issues happened to you?

Cold start is 50F when it goes to sleep, you will need to turn your bike on and leave it up to 10min while you bike loads and wakes up the battery before you can start it...

There are two types of temperatures, one is operating and the other is charging temperature. The regular operating temp range is from -4 to 140 degrees. The battery will allow for charging once the temperature reaches -14 degrees.

Well the only thing I do not like about those batteries is that they may burst into flames, which rises many concerns, like the bike itself or loosing your house as well because of keeping bike in garage when it happens, Chris it would be helpful if you could elaborate on this aspect of these lithium batteries, as everyone has seen Teslas and other EV's burning on side of the road in the news, also the battery that comes with the bike does just fine with those cracking amps, I have a goldwing also and on my third year with it and I have yet to experience any issues with the battery, so 600 cranking amps seem like overkill, PS. we are not on the metric system here so when you switch bank and forth with it, well either do both or stick with one for your International viewers. You are thinking about Lithium Ion Batteries, these Noco batteries are Lithium Iron Phosphate (LifeP04) a much safer battery with newer safety protections!

Just read an article on charging the LiFePO4 battery and comparing to a lead acid battery charge. Here's the link if anyone is interested. I don't know how the GW alternator will handle the charging of the Lithium battery, but am interested if anyone has any reference documents. By the way, good video and thanks for your work.

What amg is 1/3 the price and last 7 years? The NLP20 noco msrp $180. Not much diff then GYZ Yausa $140+. I also have had good luck with AGM bats. Never 7 years but 4 1/2~5+ years.

The thick red & black eyelet cable that I ran through my saddlebag is designed to plug directly in the Noco boost portable battery jumper to jumpstart the bike, the X- adapter plug is intended for charging the Lithium Battery with a Noco charger. The jumper cable will plug directly into Noco GB 20, GB40, GB20 and GBX45 for a direct safe jump off.
