In the era of grunge and gangsta rap, this was actually a rather brave & even countercultural thing for a major label to have released. Sort of like They Might Be Giants, Tori Amos, Slint, and other earnestly out-of-step artists of this era.

Eventually No Doubt became a very mainstream huge stadium rock band by the end of the decade. Tori Amos was just one of the major acts of the 90s wave of female singer songwriter rock so I would not see her as too weird either.
@EclecticoIconoclasta3 жыл бұрын
@@candideggplant1575 Which is in part why in the UK you had Britpop which was in a big way a reaction againts the selfdestructiveness and gloom of grunge and also againts their own gloomy alternative genre shoegazing. Even hip hop became more bright and less violent as a reaction to the deaths of 2pac and Biggie. The bad part of all that was that by the late 90s the mainstream became too pop full of prefabricated teen pop like the Spice Girls and boy bands like NSync and Backstreet boys or by dumb nu metal acts like Limp Biskit, so they went to the other extreme of "brightness"

Sure... they were not unique in their scene at the time except being fronted by a woman... there were quite a few punk and ska-punk bands in California... you could argue that's why it was important for them to experiment with other sounds to breakout from the 'others' to reach bigger mass appeal.

For all the young-ins saying they wish they were alive in the ‘90’s. Don’t be distraught, fact is, even if you were the chance you would have heard this was pretty slim. Hell, I was there, and just now finding many of these gems. Now the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s were a great time for music, don’t get me wrong, live concerts were amazing and really nothing like today. But it was a different time. Internet was either nonexistent or in its infancy. You didn’t have instant exposure to the local music scene on the other side of the country. You were limited to your limited local scene, and what was on the radio or some of the TV shows like late night and SNL. I think in many ways that very fact is the reason why music of that era was so varied and timeless, because there was such limited influence from around the world. What was coming out of Seattle was nothing like Southern California, NYC, Florida or any of the many other areas. When one of those influences hit main stream it was fresh and new, and there was so much of it happening. Like I said, I’m still finding gems I’ve never heard coming out of that era thanks to the internet, and it’s by far better than anything out there today.

Whats odd is I never knew of this until after Tragic Kingdom (one of the best 90s albums...fight me) and I actually feel physical nostalgia with this....thx for the memories Jon..miss them days...and fuxk Cheboygan. Always will remember them years. Shit it was only 4 yrs or less, but felt like a lifetime for me looking back. I must remember every damn day because I couldn't tell you jack for the last 10 years and I remember 4 like a book haha midlife sucks.

When they are starting out, no money, just their music, and their house that they wrote in. Major kudos to the team who Produced and Edited this no-budget video, it worked!

I always liked this song. It sounds different than anything they've ever made, even if it was their debut single.

Gwen is absolutely gorgeous in this video. I miss No Doubt. Gwen just isn't the same now. My favorite album was Tragic Kingdom, though.
