If you're talking about their latest three albums, then I completely agree: no substance whatsoever. But from 39/Smooth to 21st Century Breakdown, Billie Joe Armstrong and the Green Day crew were always doing what they liked and, not only making very intelligent criticisms of the punk rock community from which they came from, but also wrote great songs about mortality, social archetypes, media overload and its impact on our culture, anxiety, what it means to have artistic integrity, etc.
@zimshowfan11 жыл бұрын
So, really man, I feel like, as long as the music you're making is a sincere effort of your artistic abilities, and as best an expression of who you are as a person as you can muster, then who is to say you aren't writing music that could be considered "punk?" And if you're truly an outsider who feels misunderstood or is fed up with something about humanity, and you manage to express those feelings through your music, then you're definitely punk rock.
@FMK13174 жыл бұрын
Well said, tbh Punk just literally means being yourself. In this case, making the music you wanna make.
@darickfrasca2390 Жыл бұрын
Punk does not mean being yourself Lmao It’s a genre. It has a certain sound. Thats like saying “if you just play music that expresses you to the best of your ability that’s true metal” like ..what lmao
@tomatobooksentertainment837610 ай бұрын
@@darickfrasca2390 No, there are sub-genres of punk, which are the types of music people decide to make like Skate punk, Ska, and street punk.Now not everything that has punk and anti-authority view is punk.A lot of OLDer country and blue-grass was very anti-authority and anti-racism.Just because rap has those views also dosent make it punk, but you are not punk if you support coprarations and racism, you are a piece of sh*t.Punk has sounds, but in my oppion if your a nazi your not a punk.

True, sir, but punk rock isn't just one style of music. It's a wide variety of sounds. Bands like The Clash and RKL are totally different in terms of sound and style from one another, yet they are BOTH still punk. And if you don't think Green Day's style of music is punk rock, then I advise you to listen to some Screeching Weasel, U.S. Bombs or Pinhead Gunpowder songs. If Green Day's style of music isn't punk rock, then sure sure those bands aren't either. :P
@zimshowfan11 жыл бұрын
Last I checked, The Clash didn't check out of the mainstream department. They died in it. The Ramones are practically a household name now. Johnny Rotten does butter advertisements for Christ's sake, and it doesn't look like he's going to stop anytime soon. Are these people not punk despite what they've done?! Also, if your beef is that you DON'T LIKE Green Day, then that's one thing. But to say that they aren't punk, well, that's an entire different story.

And yes, many bands have been told by others that they aren't punk and left the community. But I wonder just how many of them left of their own accord. I bet you that some of them had always had clear-cut ideas ideas of who they were as people (ideas which the philosophy of punk was absolutely congruent with) and the punk community, believing them not to be punk, relentlessly beat the ideals out of them until they weren't sure who they were anymore. :P

I'll give you one more example: many punks say that real punk bands don't write songs about love and girls, yet The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, Descendents, Sewer Trout, Rancid and Bad Brains have a rather large collection of love songs under their belts. Are those bands not punk? The mere fact that there has never been a concrete defintion for "punk", as well as the fact that the most commonly-shared defintions are so penetrable, makes me just say "Fuck it! Who are you to say what punk is?!"

Common punk idelogies are riddled with tons of little hypocracies. For example, many say you're not punk rock if you wear make-up and shit. Plenty of punk bands do that, such as The Adicts, Disenfranchised Grief and Foploph. Yet we still regard them as punk bands. Here's another example, many punks say that you can't sign to a major label and still be punk, yet those same people praise bands like The Clash and Husker Du, and regard them as punk legends.

First off, I'm sure they didn't. Second, punk rock typically deals with a rather restricted set of chords. Different punk bands are bound to make similar sounding songs. That doesn't necessarily mean they've "stolen" those songs. Third, by your logic, NOFX has stolen some songs from Green Day too. Fourth, Billie Joe Armstrong and Fat Mike have been, and still are, pretty close friends, which reinforces how stupid it sounds that EITHER of them would've ever "stole" ANYTHING from one another.

Don't talk to me like I don't know shit about Punk Rock, show some respect. And yes I agree, as any other musical genre there is some musical variation between sub genre, that's why we have Hardcore Punk,Punk Rock,Ska Punk, Pop Punk etc etc, HOWEVER like every other things in life there has to be a limit. If there is just no limit bands like My chemical romance, simple plan, asking alexandria and more bands like these could label themselves as punk.

And even if the songs suck, that doesn't necesarilly mean that no genuine efforts went into them. There's plenty of stupid punks out there who write shitty lyrics, but when you listen to their music, you can tell that they actually gave a shit when they made those songs. In many regards, the punk community (especially in my own California punk scene) has turned punk into the very thing it stands against: an establishment. There are rules to follow and traditions to uphold in the punk world.
