I'm in no artificial camp, and have noticed when you make your own food you choose how much sugar goes in and 99% of the time its way less than a store bought equivalent. So mindfully using your sugar still puts you on the not over using it train.

One of the big problems with observational science. When you find something that may be connected, or may not be connected, and then somone thinks yes! This is it! And then every possible correlation is seen as causal evidence. Especially when it’s a theory the media likes. Like red wine is good for your blood, olive oil is healthy, all red meat is poison, or some foods are superfoods and the more you eat them the better. Media loves jumping to conclusions.

by far the hardest part of fasting is the boredom. If you've never done a multiday fast, you have no idea the enormous amount of your daily time is spent thinking about, preparing, or eating food. Depending on your lifestyle, it can be really hard to fill all that extra free time. If you want a fast to be easy, start it when you are very busy
@darktimesatrockymountainhi4046
@darktimesatrockymountainhi4046 Жыл бұрын
You are correct about fasting, and I commend you for the discipline to fast. One should always, when fasting, simply carry on their normal daily activities - except, of course, preparing & eating food. Otherwise, just carry on your life & do things as if not fasting. However, boredom is nothing but the expectation of stimulation or entertainment. One of the things we try to purge is expectation, in general, as it draws our attention away from our life at the present. We try to face our life & activities every day, without thought of the past or future. Now, we realize this is difficult & it is often a work-in-progress, but we try our best to muster the discipline to purge our bodies while living in the present & becoming comfortable being alone with ourselves. Good luck!

I was surprised to hear the cohort group mentioned. For the last 5-6 years, I've been a participant. Every 3 months, I receive a 5 page questionnaire with the same questions about your current health and lifestyle. Now and then, i receive a questionnaire with a specific subjet; COVID, exposure to chemicals, asthma, etc. Once every 5 years, I get an invite to a free health center, where tests such as blood, urine, hearing, eyesight and balance are conducted. Another questionnaire is given to fill out while you wait your turn. The results are sent by mail to the participant and their GP. A follow-up consultation is offered several weeks later with a doctor from the center. Nothing is forced. If you don't want to answer a question or go to the health center, you simply don't. My last questionnaire asked if i was interested in taking a genetic test or a bowel cancer test.

I consume artificial sweeteners on the regular. I would never claim they are good for you, but on the whole I think they are much less bad than sugar. When my taste buds call for a variety of flavor, those sweeteners sure do come in handy while also minimizing the damage that would have been caused by the real thing. It's a crutch that I'm willing to walk with. Maybe some day in the future, I'll completely break free from my sweet tooth, but not today.

I generally feel the best when I'm minimizing sweeteners, regardless of where they come from. I try to keep sugar in places where it's physically necessary to make something I enjoy, like ice cream or baked goods. And then ideally I'm not eating sweetened anything the rest of the time. From just an experiential perspective, not being glutted with sweetness all the time makes whole foods taste a lot better, and that's worth a lot more to me than sweet drinks etc.

As an artificial sweetener & biology enjoyer myself I had to pause in disbelief when you started going over the breakdown products of each sweetener. I've done some light googling here and there on the subject and knew about the methanol produced when aspartame is broken down and always worried about it so having it put into perspective with the tomato juice helps put my mind at ease. Same with the sucralose when I read it may have an impact on insulin sensitivity. Enjoyed the video, and absolutely liked the break down on the break down (ha ;)) of the various sweeteners. For the study which showed an increase in disease for consumers of sweeteners, I couldn't help but think that it might also be a case of reverse causation or even just correlation does not make causation. Though, I'm sure it was handled in the study, as if a nobody like me can think of it, surely the people conducting the study though of it. But I couldn't escape thinking that more people who are actually dealing with these diseases might be trying to cut down on their sugar intake (possibly by using the sweeteners) and thus you end up with a higher chance of finding people with these diseases in the group of people who use sweeteners. (Ok, I'm sure that didn't come out all too clear, I hope it is at least somewhat understandable...)

I do have one question though. What's more important to physical health in terms of reducing disease and staying healthy and fit? Is it more related to our physical activity and staying in shape, or can we blame a lot of these health problems on certain types of foods and ingredients? Its a very complicated question because there are so many factors for an answer of trying to do the best of both those worlds. I just wonder why we blame a lot of health conditions on what we intake, but never ask about the effects of being physically fit and still having a "normal" diet.

I am loving this content. I was diagnosed with a GI disease and while I was experiencing symptoms but not knowing what the symptoms were caused by I eliminated everything artificial in my household and forced everyone else in the house to do the same. Everyone experienced an improvement in their gut health. My mother and I both lost weight. (Which was good for her and bad for me. I had to add more fat to my diet to compensate because I don’t absorb nutrients well and was already on the verge of being underweight.) In any case, I’m not sure if the main culprit was the artificial sweeteners but the artificial stuff and processed foods in general were negatively impacting the health of everyone in the household.

Very well researched and I thank you for taking the time to make this information easier to understand (I nearly wrote 'digest'! LOL). I'm in the Stevia camp, but get frustrated with companies that don't put equivalent amounts on their labels. I want to know how the stuff in the package compares to 1 tsp of sugar. So when I make my coffee I know how much to use, and I can also work out which products have more 'filler' than others. I've seen some that you need 2 tsps of the stuff to equal 1 tsp of sugar. That's a LOT of extra filler that's not necessary. It's taken me a few years to work out which of the products sold at local stores are a good value. Plus you have to take into account what those fillers are.

I've been using artificial sweeteners for a while now. One of the questions I've been seeing about them lately is, "do artificial sweeteners make you want more sweet things like natural sugars do?" I'd love to see your take on that if there is even enough research available to have an opinion on.

I'm another anecdote saying artificial sweeteners do not make me want the "real thing" more, either. I like having sweet things of varying flavors over the days. Mostly beverages, but not always. I keep to sugar-free and no sugar added items as much as possible, doing without or being very careful with portions otherwise. I never crave sugar. If anything I'm more susceptible to craving or overeating flavorful starches (think potato chips).

While your commentary on the relatively recent FDA approval of artificial sweeteners (~50 years ago) is accurate, it might have been beneficial to also note that these sweeteners have actually been in use for over a century starting in the 1800s. Similarly, most traditional varieties of apples 🍎, though they have never required nor received specific FDA approval, have been a staple in our diet since time immemorial. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed your video and appreciated the information provided. Thank you!

Look into Dr. Boz videos. While I generally don't want to support "internet shills" I also recognize that NOT EVERYONE is a con artist and there is compelling evidence that very low carb diet can reduce insulin sensitivity and diabetes. So much so that there are now corporations who are providing assistance to diabetic employees to follow this protocol to reduce or eliminate their insulin dependance (not because they are good people, but because employees who are diabetic cost more than those who aren't - benefits, lost time, lost productivity). Oh ... and I have tried it myself as a pre-diabetic so I can say that it appears to work. It *looks* like losing weight and going on a very strict low-carb diet can reverse diabetes (Type 2 only), I would love to see a large-scale trustworthy rct on this. Big pharma makes soooo much money off of this that you can't trust anything that they touch in ANY way.

The sad part is that overconsumption of sugar is absolutely pushed by the food companies and their lobbyists through big government. More and more are foods being driven away from low-sugar content and more and more are savory-based foods (ones with higher fat) being condemned based on super old studies that were already recognized as being problematic with modern-day microscope focus on data quality. The fact is, even the FDA's maximum daily allowance of sugar (25 grams or almost 2 tablespoons) is extremely high considering that only five decades ago people were consuming a fraction of it. Google says people in the USA consume a whopping ~100lbs per person per year. Human bodies just were not designed to consume this much high-energy sweets, we do not have the metabolic process of an insect; nor do we have the chitinous exoskeleton which requires sugars as a building block.

In 1980's I squawked often about the irony of the brand name Nutrasweet for a product whose sole value is from having zero nutrition! As aspartame was new, and less objectionable than sacchrine, I tried a brief experiment with diet soda in an effort to spare my teeth some sugar. Several times my blood sugar crashed promptly after ingesting the no calorie soft drink. I had a brain / body chat and told myself to file this peculiar flavor alongside iced tea, which I don't sweeten. I certainly wasn't mistaking it for my regular Coke! Instant success! I never grew to enjoy the flavor, but I never had the stuff crash my blood sugar again. (Hypoglycemic family; didn't need a test strip to tell me.) I was avoiding the nicely chilled water fountain because the town's water supply was reported to have high radon, and I was able to pretend the well where I lived 7 miles away wasn't equally problematic. The colleague reporting the radon said, "but nbody's sick from it" to which I replied, "One of our day shift supervisors has stomach cancer. I'm counting that." That's when I started avoiding the water at work. DIGRESSION: This internal argument capacity to be both subject and object in the sentence, "I'm working on myself" is the "Western duality" that Eastern religions disparage so frequently. I bring this up because I wondered for decades what was meant by that, and an ecumenical Buddhist explained it to me just a few years ago. I'd condense a longer, drier KZbin vid than yours on this subject as, "people of eastern cultures and those of western cultures interpret the world differently." Another vid I need to pick out of my watch later list shows east/west philosophy differences as seen in contrasting styles of mortise & tenon joints in frame carpentry. I hope the engineering interpretation will stick to my brain better. I'm okay with my duality. It works for me.

Sucralose is a nightmare. I have never had any kind of reaction to any foods or ingredients there in, until sucralose. I started drinking Sparkling Ice, about one a day for a couple weeks or more, I really can't remember. One evening I started to feel queasy and dizzy. It worsened as the evening wore on. I don't eat or drink a lot so it was pretty easy to narrow down the culprit. I looked at one of the bottles of Ice and low and behold it had sucralose in it. It's the only thing I could think of that could have caused the problem. Never drank another. I did try a cup of Nestles hot cocoa a few weeks later, knowing it had sucralose and sugar in it, only to get mildly dizzy and queasy. So the lesson here is, be very careful what artificial stuff you consume, it could be making you sick. As an aside, I do not consume diet drinks or foods and, I never drank more than one Sparkling Ice in a day.

It was approved in the US in 2002. Its biggest application is baked goods, since it's stable under high heat conditions. I'm going to feel like the unrelatable crazy guy here, but when I was a teenager I noticed a correlation with the muscles in my jaw locking up a few hours after drinking crystal light, or chewing gum. I started experimenting and found that those products are marked as sugar free and contained aspartame. I've since avoided aspartame, and sometimes someone will offer me something that will cause the same locking jaw effect, it will turn out aspartame was in that as well. When I was in my late 20's I was sick and my wife bought me some jell-o, after eating a cup my heart started racing and I had to lay on the floor for a few hours before things calmed down, again it was aspartame. I've done some digging to see if other people have similar reactions but haven't found much, and no official documentation seems to acknowledge that this is a thing, but I thought I'd share that experience since you asked us about it, and with your research maybe you've reading something that might shed some light on my experiences.

During the 1980's and '90's I worked at an animal research lab that did safety testing on artificial sweeteners, among them Sweet N' Low. I still remember seeing the warning label on those pink packets: "HAS BEEN FOUND TO CAUSE CANCER IN LABORATORY ANIMALS." I realize that these animals were fed insane amounts of these substances, but still. I do not knowingly use them and I try to limit my exposure. My philosophy after working in this industry is that tried and true natural products are best. It would not surprise me down the road if scientists started rethinking the connection between diet and diabetes just as people are starting to question the cholesterol-heart disease link.

Thank you Mr. Johnny for this informative video. I have had 'steroid diabetes' (prescription 'steroid drugs) so I had to fight the sugar power. I found there are "nonnutritive sweeteners" that are 'natural' AND 'no calorie'. Erythritol & monk fruit blend tastes like sugar but does not add calories. Stevia tastes sweet (not like sugar) and also adds no calories. *NOT* man-made, artificial, or manufactured, they are used by people on low-carb diets. One doctor says low-carb is more like 'natural' human pre-industrial, hunter-gatherer diets. Also, food technology has advanced faster than human digestive systems have adapted. So basically we should not eat any industrial manufactured ('fake') food. That includes 'artificial sweeteners' & specially 'seed oils'.

Great Episode! Regarding the term “risk” with regard to studies based on associations, “risk” refers to cause and effect. Associations cannot establish causal outcomes. Therefore, the term “risk” is falsely claiming cause and effect. You’re not alone, most KZbinrs and the media run wild and loose with this term. Nearly all lifestyle studies based on associations and survey data cannot and should not claim risk outcomes. Another hidden falsehood is the inherent bias shaping these studies. There are usually conflicts of interest that are found listed in these studies.
