This is not slang, it's used in that way in many different languages.
@donnahughs97493 жыл бұрын
@@vohbovohborian28 Yes, but it can still be slang--most (all?) languages have slang. Here's a definition: "a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people." I think the use of "bread" for money fits that.
@vohbovohborian283 жыл бұрын
@@donnahughs9749 I think this is much more of an idiom than slang. The use of bread as an equivalent for money is extremely old. I believe that it is already referred to as such in the bible (give us this day our daily bread = give us what we actually need to exist). At least in Dutch this is a very common way to refer to money, and I'm sure it is the same in many other languages.

Twon, you have opened another deep hole of great music. Billy Joel is a fantastic ride. Just a few titles to get you started: More than a woman to me We didn't start the fire Pressure Allentown Just the way you are Tell her about it Keeping the faith You may be right, I may be crazy Uptown girl A New York State Of Mind That should get you started. But remember that is only the tip of the iceberg. Billy Joel was huge in the 80's. One of my absolute favorites. You'll like him, great story teller. Also get ready and start listening to Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen.

He had a bad recording deal, so he left town and worked for a while as a 'piano man' to pay the bills. He had to play under the pseudonym Bill Martin until his lawyers got him out of the deal. The people he sings about are all people he met while doing this.

"It's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete/When I wore a younger man's clothes" is such a great line. And the older I get, the better it is. And "bread" was a common term for money in the 60s and 70s.

There's some truly wonderful and descriptive turns of phrase in this song. "Paul is a real estate novelist, who never had time for a wife," paints a picture of a guy working hard in the real estate business, having it take up far too much of his time, and writing bits of a story that he yearns to publish yet deep down knows he never will, all in a single line. "Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness, But it's better than drinking alone," is an image that struck me as so sad and heartbreaking when I first heard it in the early 1980s, and still does to this day.

"We Didn't Start The Fire" is a good one. It goes through happenings of history from the 1950s forward. It's wild.
@scrapper34943 жыл бұрын
In a number of interviews Billy Joel has stated that 'We Didn't Start the Fire' is one of his least favourite songs, yet with its catchy music and succinct historical statements it really caught people's attention, to the point where lots of people mentioned they've had to look up incidents or people mentioned in the song ( for example I had to search to find out who Syngman Rhee, Chou En-Lai and Starkweather were when I heard it). Something that's equally noteworthy about it is how many people have posted KZbin videos with them singing their own lyrics to the original music. Either they're singing about more recent historical events, or about other topics - there must be hundreds of videos of "We Didn't start the Virus" about COVID-19 set to Billy's music.

He will be adding to that record he is scheduled to appear Nov and Dec 2021 and Jan, Feb, March & April of 2022. These are to make up the six shows that were cancelled due to COVID. Billy Joel's lyrics alone, even without the music, would make top notch poetry. He tells a story and really makes you feel like you're there. And on top of that, his song writing is incredible in every way. His melodies, his harmonies, the song forms, everything. I think it's safe to say there's never been a bigger talent than him. Billy Joel has an unbelievable catalogue of songs - - written and performed - - it's all different - try Goodnight Saigon, Honesty, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, My Life, River of Dreams, Big Shot; too many to list. He started around in the late 1970s. Piano Man is a song that makes people stop and sway and sing together in bars and stuff when it comes on.

The way I've come to see this song is that it's about how we all have our own ideas about where we want to be in life or what we want to achieve, and bring ourselves down because we compare ourselves to our highest ideal self. And that we tend to think that's just us, when in reality everyone relates to that to some degree- and it's a personal journey we all go through in our own way, and in the end does it even matter if we can be happy with each other as the people we are today?
