I no longer drink, but this song reminds me of some many sad and lonely people. Fun fact: Billy Joel did play piano in a lounge in the early 70s in LA. The songs is based on his experience at the time.

Went to his concert out in Pittsburgh a couple weeks ago. 45,000 people singing along to this song when he started playing it. He stopped singing and let the crowd sing the whole song. It was awesome.

This is a deep song about people escaping their lives in a bar with a piano man keeping them entertained. All these people wish they were more successful, including the piano man. This was Billy Joel's first hit and still my favorite song of his. Billy Joel writes music and lyrics, easily a top 10 singer/songwriter.

Even though it is about these people it is the true story of Billy’s life while playing in a bar/ lounge/ restaurant while escaping from his record company back in New York.

"Piano Man" was Billy Joel's breakthrough hit in 1973. This video was shot in 1985. Billy Joel's music ruled the radio back when I was a kid. My dad even knows this song. Joel's songs often tell stories, some pensive, some humorous, and always entertaining. When you're ready for more from him, check out some of his other hits and deep cuts from the seventies and eighties "Big Shot", "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)", "You May Be Right", "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me", "She's Always a Woman", "Only the Good Die Young", "Allentown", "Pressure", "The Longest Time", "Tell Her About It", "New York State of Mind", "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", "Miami 2017 (I've Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)", "The Stranger", and "Captain Jack" along with many others.

Piano bars are making a comeback, thankfully, after almost disappearing totally during the disco era. I grew up going to a piano bar where my grandmother played, and it was the best feeling, everyone sitting around and singing together.. So glad the tradition didnt die out..

You should also review the song by Billy Joel called "Honesty". Its another great song with great lyrics.. one of my favorites by Billy Joel. On your topic of loneliness I always thought bars in alot of ways were depressing. It doesn't make sense if your feeling down and lonely your going to drink alcohol at a bar which is a known depressant and will just accentuate your current state even more. It is amazing how many people try to mask or cope with everyday life via alcohol, cigarettes, chewing tobacco etc..... because they are not generally happy with there life or situation. Love the song because there are so many truths to the lyrics.

As a fan of Billy Joel since the mid-70s, when I was a kid, I'm surprised so many listeners, including long-time fans, overlook something critical about the song: Bill noticed the lonely and unfulfilled patrons at the piano bar because Billy was struggling with depression and a feeling that he could and should be so much more successful --> but he was stuck playing in a dive piano bar in L.A. as a way to hold out to break a bad, first album contract he wanted to get out of. So when Billy writes about John the bartender saying that he was sure he could be a movie star, "If could get out of this place," Billy is really writing himself.

This was written, and is an honest take, about a six moth job Billy Joel took before recording his first album, (this being a song he added to it I think). It was a kind of fill in job, as he wasn’t a well known musician, and time in the studio was expensive, and others took priority before for an un proven, new signed artist. There’s an interview where he discusses it, well worth a watch and is on KZbin and should be easy to find. Brings more to an already deep and thought provoking song, and imo one of his best.

Somebody told me something once, that I have never forgotten. Someone told me that if you go to a club or a bar when it's packed, to look around at all the people, and think about what it would be like if they suddenly turned all of the music off and all of the lights on. You would see a big roomful of the most miserable and lonely people. That statement was really profound to me.
